One protester has died and dozens were injured as almost a quarter of a million people took to the streets of France, angry at rising fuel prices.

The female protester who died was struck after a driver surrounded by demonstrators panicked and accelerated.

The "yellow vests", so-called after the high-visibility jackets they are required to carry in their cars, blocked motorways and roundabouts.

They accuse President Emmanuel Macron of abandoning "the little people".

Mr Macron has not so far commented on the protests, some of which have seen demonstrators call for him to resign.

But he admitted earlier in the week that he had not "really managed to reconcile the French people with their leaders".

Nonetheless, he accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block his reform programme.

What has happened so far?
Some 244,000 people took part in protests across France, the interior ministry said in its latest update.

It said 106 people were injured during the day, five seriously, with 52 people arrested.

Most of the protests have been taking place without incident although several of the injuries came when drivers tried to force their way through protesters.

Chantal Mazet, 63, was killed in the south-eastern Savoy region when a driver who was taking her daughter to hospital panicked at being blocked by about 50 demonstrators, who were striking the roof of her vehicle, and drove into them.

The driver has been taken into police custody in a state of shock.

In Paris protesters approaching the Élysée Palace, the president's official residence, were repelled with tear gas.

Why are drivers on the warpath?
The price of diesel, the most commonly used fuel in French cars, has risen by around 23% over the past 12 months to an average of €1.51 (£1.32; $1.71) per litre, its highest point since the early 2000s, AFP news agency reports.

World oil prices did rise before falling back again but the Macron government raised its hydrocarbon tax this year by 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on petrol, as part of a campaign for cleaner cars and fuel.

The decision to impose a further increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol on 1 January 2019 was seen as the final straw.

Speaking on Wednesday, the president blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise. He also said more tax on fossil fuels was needed to fund renewable energy investments.

How big is the movement?
It has broad support. Nearly three-quarters of respondents to a poll by the Elabe institute backed the Yellow Vests and 70% wanted the government to reverse the fuel tax hikes.

More than half of French people who voted for Mr Macron support the protests, Elabe's Vincent Thibault told AFP.

"The expectations and discontent over spending power are fairly broad, it's not just something that concerns rural France or the lower classes," he said.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the movement has grown via social media into a broad and public criticism of Mr Macron's economic policies.

Are opposition politicians involved?
They have certainly tried to tap into it. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who was defeated by Mr Macron in the second round of the presidential election, has been encouraging it on Twitter.

She said: "The government shouldn't be afraid of French people who come to express their revolt and do it in a peaceful fashion."

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the centre-right Republicans, called on the Macron government to scrap the next planned increase in carbon tax on fossil fuels in January to offset rising vehicle fuel prices.

Mr Castaner has described Saturday's action as a "political protest with the Republicans behind it".

Olivier Faure, leader of the left-wing Socialist Party said the movement - which has no single leader and is not linked to any trade union - had been "born outside political parties".

"People want politicians to listen to them and respond. Their demand is to have purchasing power and financial justice," he said.

Is there any room for compromise?
On Wednesday, the government announced action to help poor families pay their energy and transport bills.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 5.6 million households would receive energy subsidies. Currently 3.6 million receive them.

A state scrappage bonus on polluting vehicles would also be doubled for France's poorest families, he said, and fuel tax credits would be brought in for people who depend on their cars for work.

Protesters have mocked the president relentlessly as "Micron" or "Macaron" (Macaroon) or simply Manu, the short form of Emmanuel, which he famously scolded a student for using.

To be honest, I don't blame the driver at all.

If they can't find someone better to be President I'll do it for a case of beer.
Hell, make that case of beer be the fucking president, it's guaranteed to not say even half the stupid shit everyone in the French government is saying to dig their graves deeper by the minute

Funnily enough, we had a sort of viable moderate right-wing candidate at the last presidential elections, but right during that time period, he got exposed and charged with paying his family for fake jobs over the years. I mean, he had his issues, right, just like most politicians, but he was miles ahead of the rest. Fillon was the name.

And as soon as he was taken out of the picture, that’s when Macron started his whole “revolutionary campaign to change the establishment”, and ultimately won the election.

Who else do we have in the French political landscape?
Mélenchon, the commie, is a joke. I remember him saying during a national debate that his first order of business should he be elected would be to dissolve the Republic, get a new constitution and new elections for the people by the people, and then retire.

Le Pen really failed her big political debate during the elections, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, but while she herself is lacking, just like the rest of her family, her ideas seem to hold more and more weight among French people - the whole populist, anti-immigration, anti-EU mindset.

And that’s about it. Our politics are a joke.

Oh, and even the “youth” isn’t spared. There’s like a thing here called primaries for the “youth”, where within a political party, there are elections to chose the “young, promising, future leader”. And at the last ones, one of the candidates was recorded discussing rigging the votes by signing people up without their knowledge and voting in their stead.

Just look at his face. You know you can trust him :3

So according to above, France's best hope is Melenchon gets in and does exactly as he says and gets less retarded elections (remember the other election with FN with the elder LePen?) and constitution and checks into the retirement home, and then in the next election which Melenchon made better than the current system, France gets a better government which in a few election cycles will make France great again?

Melancon winning is not a likely possibility, most likely is the old left and right parties undocking themselves before the next election OR Macron's party becoming the new defacto left wing party and him losing to the right.

New nationwide demonstrations are coming up today (tomorrow for Burgers et al.), also known as Acte X (Act X) https://www.ouest-france.fr/societe...s-attendre-samedi-paris-et-en-regions-6179695
Potato English said:
The ninth weekend of Yellow Vest mobilization had mobilized 84,000 people throughout France according to the Ministry of the Interior. How much will they be in act 10? This new Saturday event is also the first since the launch of the Great National Debate.

Meetings of Yellow Vests are scheduled Saturday, January 19 across France for the tenth consecutive Saturday, while the government launched Tuesday, January 15, its Great National Debate to stop this unprecedented social protest.

Saturday, January 12, more than 80,000 people had demonstrated in the country, including 5,000 in Bourges where a call to gather had been launched. This mobilization, up from 50,000 the previous week, remains well below the hundreds of thousands gathered in November or December, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, regularly criticized by the Yellow Vests.

In Paris, Rennes, Marseille, Toulouse ...
In Paris, yellow vests met at the Place des Invalides at midday with an ambition: "The million in Paris! ". They invite participants to bring "a flower or a candle in tribute" to those killed or wounded "for (their) cause" since the beginning of the movement on November 17.

In Rennes, between 1,000 and 3,000 protesters are expected. The prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine confirms the presence of several hundred yellow vests from Côtes-d'Armor. The traders were warned by e-mail by the Union of trades and industries of the hotel industry of Ille-et-Vilaine: "We have just been informed by the services of the State of high risks of overflows which will result from the event organized in Rennes. "Faced with risks of overflow, the mayor, Nathalie Appéré, calls for calm.

In Angers, a regional rally is being prepared on social networks. The prefect of Maine-et-Loire, Bernard Gonzalez, has issued a decree prohibiting the regional event in the city center in the absence of prior declaration. He fears "damage by disruptive elements".

In Toulouse, where Les Vellets Jaunes called for a large regional gathering, Act 9 brought together at least 6,000 people, the strongest mobilization officially recorded in the city since the beginning of the movement in mid-November.

"It is truly an undemocratic reflex to persist in the organization of demonstrations which, in fact, have become the pretext for degradations and an extremely disturbing movement whose aim is to overthrow the Republic and to shake up the economic and social system. social ", said Friday, January 18 Jean-Luc Moudenc, the mayor LR of the city.

In Marseille, where 3,000 people had gathered last week, they meet at the beginning of the afternoon on the Old Port. "We want it to continue, we manage to get out of the world that does not usually go out to demonstrate, explains Luc Benedetti, a yellow Gilet Marseille. The only thing to do now is to send a letter of dismissal to Castaner and Macron, since we are their employers. Anyway, Macron, it will not hold until spring. "

Meetings are also announced in Bordeaux, Lyon, Nantes, Saint-Etienne, Roanne, Valence, Clermont-Ferrand, Montélimar, Dijon, Nevers, Montceau-les-Mines, Toulon, Avignon and Béziers.

Scattered media figures
Éric Drouet, Priscillia Ludosky and Maxime Nicolle appeared complementary and welded in the media. On Monday, December 31, they were even the first three signatories of a joint statement posted on the Facebook page of the "France in anger".

Since Monday, January 14 and in particular the break on Facebook between Eric Drouet and Priscillia Ludosky, nothing goes between the three media figures of the movement, reveals France Info, which will not be displayed together during the act 10. Éric Drouet will in Paris, Maxime Nicolle in Toulouse according to La Dépêche du Midi, as for Priscillia Ludosky, she did not pronounce.

"Many police forces" with LBDs
The government has announced that it will again "many police on the street" this weekend, while the controversy swells on the accumulation of serious injuries of protesters caused by including the launchers of defense bullets (LBD) whose use is justified by Christophe Castaner.

According to Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, there is "less and less mobilization". "The play drags on, there are not many people on the stage and in the room," he said Friday on Europe 1.

According to Christophe Castaner, "it's time to change rooms" and move to the "national debate" launched Tuesday, January 15 by Emmanuel Macron to end the dispute.

Purchasing power, taxation, democracy and the environment: the four themes proposed for this Great National Debate, also unpublished, correspond to those most often mentioned by the thousands of French people, who have rebelled against a government policy deemed unfair.

"continuing to protest reflexively is undemocratic"

Could you possibly BE more out-of-touch?!

Hmm group that keeps fucking up and causing protests claims protests against them are decreasing.

Why do I get the feeling that this statement doesn't apply to, say, people still protesting Brexit or Trump 2 years after said events?

Long post:

Missed this from last week somehow. The Gendarmarie got one their APCs stuck momentarily

Didn't see any funny driving moments today (yet) but the APCs are still out there:

They're still pulling in large crowds despite a total news blackout. This guy has a good timeline for today:

Also I can't help but notice that Bordeaux seems like one of the real spicy places every time there's a protest.

They're fucking up some banks, too:

Oh and look at that, a small little demonstration in Stuttgart:

I misplaced the tweet but it said some of the protestors took over some toll booths somewhere and were just letting cars through for free. It fits pretty well with their destroying speed cameras and stuff on highways these past few weeks. Guess they're just as tired with getting nickel and dimed while driving from point A to B like everyone else in the world.

This French journalist lady pointed out how Macron still doesn't get it. Not in as many words, and not that she would probably agree with framing it that way. Take one look at her twitter bio and you'll see where she's coming from

My former high school teacher would be astonished by the media blackout on this.

She says the media only desires ratings, so of course they should be all over this.

Protest is undemocratic now, apparently.

Question: let say in the next round, it is Melenchon vs. LePen in the second round.

Who would win and how would the media/blue checkmarks react?

On the other hand, the MSM also desires gibs from the government for being what are essentially their propaganda arms. Giving any attention to the people that want to topple the guys that pay them isn't a great strategy for them as all it will do is cause a Streisand Effect and make more people join. Corporatists always look out for their own if it's to their mutual benefit and the MSM and the Neoliberal Globalists of Macron and his ilk are entirely in bed with each other

Almost certainly they'd go big for Melenchon. The question, to me would be the tone of the rhetoric. "More acceptable of two extremes" vs. "Finally, I can openly campaign for Communism!

Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron is a false god and a pretend messiah.

He intends to rule like Jupiter, but he will be cast down like Caelus and Cronus.

The Western corporate mainstream media calls him a Savior of Western civilization, when he is no more than an Annihilator of the culture.

He desires to command an Empire of Europe, when he now has less power than a petty tribal chieftain.

The media claims that he is loved by all, when his own people despise him.

He wishes to stand up to Donald Trump, when Trump makes him look like a clown.

The media sings his praises, when the people of France demands that he steps down.

He claims to represent democracy, when he attempts to suppress protesters.

Down with globalism.

Down with neoliberalism.

Down with Macron.

Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron is the French embodiment of neoliberalism, globalism, and anti-nationalism. He is little more than a puppet of the EU, and should resign now, if only to save his own head.

=================================

While I fancy myself an agnostic theist, currently, I can't help but put at least some stock in apocalyptic prophecies of an Antichrist, with the way the world is going crazy nowadays. I believe that Macron may be a type of such a figure, if he may come into existence in the future.

Merkel should press him hard in the next EU negotiations, he is weak, maybe we can get our land back.

Merkel should press him hard in the next EU negotiations, he is weak, maybe we can get our land back.
Macron and Merkel would have been married to each other if the former didn't have a wife that's already within her same age range. She approves of every single little thing he doing of down to the last rubber bullet getting shot into the crowds of protesters. It's been nothing short of her life's work to turn Germany and the EU as a not as overly violent Fourth Reich with her leading it at the helm and she'll be god (or whatever the fuck she, Macron and the others worship, maybe Baal, Moloch or Slaanesh at this point) damned if she's going to let some French peasants fuck it up for her now
