If you need external "help" you're doing it wrong,
No man's an island. If you end up having a chemical imbalance or a brain problem, getting outside help is a good thing. Everyone can benefit from eating better, reasoning, and their own research, but if you seem to keep hitting walls over and over again, you might need outside help. Some people can't understand how to do things unless suggested or demonstrated to them, sometimes it turns out you have bipolar and can be mostly normal with medication. Mostly. You're on Kiwi Farms reading this, you're fucked.

We don't have written records of the people whining on social media in the Victorian era to be fair.

Something something definition of insanity and all that, people make things worse for themselves by not trying to do things differently, and they never willingly walk the way of pain because nobody truly likes to suffer. Pain is a different thing, but actual suffering is what catalyses mental growth IMO.
You could argue therapy is a form of that, if it's the "breaking down thought blockages" kind and I would agree with you, but basic ass CBT/Freud stuff/muh talking isn't, there's no way to recombine your mind other than by breaking it no matter how mindful you are.
People don't change because of some Ship of Theseus bullshit, they're different because what was there before has been destroyed, chemical imbalance or no.

Anyway I can't really speak for anyone else because of my horrortastic combo of deficiencies so take nothing I say as true and listen to your professionals.

Yeah survivorship bias is a strong factor, but it being a popular thing now to be a whiner says a lot about the mouse utopia direction we're headed towards.

If you need external "help" you're doing it wrong, I firmly believe in the power of post traumatic strengthening, much like how a beaten lump of iron makes the superior steel the human psyche is empowered by it's tribulations. Look at how utterly lacklustre the strength of modern people is; the failure in the face of abundance, the sheer absence of drive in so many of them, people have never been so far away from starving to death yet now they struggle? Insufficient beatings, unironically.
I think the issue is that people misuse therapy, and the therapists' pockets are totally okay with that.

It should be seen the same as going to a personal trainer. You don't /need/ one to reach your goal, you're just paying for someone to hold you accountable. Know what you're going in for and what your goal is, and be open minded to make changes, many of which might be uncomfortable.

Instead, people throw away money to have someone tell them what they want to hear rather than seeking genuine self-improvement.

It is a bit similar to the faith/religion problem of going through the motions as opposed to actually believing in something, same concept can be applied to whichever therapy it is you're (religiously) adhering to but not truly having any faith in. It's ultimately an all-in-your-mind thing IMO like with most other things mental.
Can you even give unwilling therapy? If it can't be afflicted by another is it even something you need to/should pay for? All speaks to the "spook" of the thing.
