The final boss in E33 isn't even really a stand-in for God, which immediately puts it ahead of, say, Xenoblade.

The final boss of E33 is quite literally the God of the painting depending on what ending you choose. You either kill God or enslave him to the evil piano for the rest of his/Maelle's life.
Not really. The playable Verso is just the painted version, he does not have Painter power. He's just the emotional crutch for Maelle.

Now one can claim Renoir is essentially a small g god, but the difference here from the usual JRPG is that he is clearly right.

Does Octopath 2 fix the damage sponge problem Octopath 1 had? I really enjoyed my early time in Octopath 1 but the longer I played, the more I felt like every fight was a slog and enemies took way too long to kill due to the weird scaling.

I dunno maybe I was in a bad mood and dropped it too early.

Yes. Bosses are still damage sponges, but that's kind of the Break and Boost system. I felt like Bravely Default was much more oppressive than Octopath 1 in terms of random encounters taking entirely too much time to take down. Octopath 1 starts ok but by the third act for everyone it feels like you are underleveled horribly and grinding out levels is a slog.

Octopath 2 is better with a combo of random trash can be taken down quickly, while bosses are still a protracted battle challenge. Also several of the characters can be absolutely BUSTED in terms of damage, Hikari and Osvald especially, that let you make most boss fights much shorter.
I skipped 1 as well because everything I read about it told me there wasn't even a semblance of a connected plot both within 1's different character's paths and between both 1 and 2's overall plot.

In 2 there's a common thread in 2/3 of the paths that all comes together in the true ending to explain why bad stuff is happening all at once (with some interesting twists).

It was definitely a gamble for me to pick up but I don't regret it. You just have to know going in about the gimmick. I would have been kinda pissed if I bought a game with what looks like a party traveling together that instead turned out to be isolated vignette's with a common theme.
Octopath isn't really about a connected plot. It's more of an Anthology series where you have 8 different stories you can explore how you like. Live-a-Live is the real spiritual ancestor of this game, but they only met up at the very end of that game. I find the best way to play an Octopath game is to pick a party of 4 and complete the game, then play the other 4 as almost a sequel game. 2 is actually better set up for this, as all the Path Actions are fulfilled by a party of 4 made from each continent. So the 3 characters you'll most likely encounter first on a playthrough are the best 3 to take through the game with you. 2 also gives 4 side quest pairings of 2 characters, and the Throne and Temenos's is fantastic, but 1 had special dialogue depending on who you brought to different towns. It wasn't as fleshed out, not voice acted, but I still remember fun interactions between Primrose and Tressa.

It's still my favorite JRPG franchise and I am looing forward to Octopath 0 later this year, even though it's recycling the mobile game.

Going through Xenoblade 1 right now and I always hate in games with dual audio how they won't go all the way to subtitle all forms of dialogue. Tales of Vesperia and Resonance of Fate both had this and I missed out on some great party banter because I wanted to be a dirty weeb and play in the original language the game was made for. I more or less HAVE to play the English dub as the in-battle dialogue isn't subtitled ALONG with the fact that the subtitles in the cutscenes are synced for the English audio as opposed for the Japanese audio.

I can't complain though, this dub is very solid. It just sucks to have less choices due to poor planning/handling of dual audio.

Say what you will about perfidious albion, but they do produce some outstanding English animu/vidya dubs

im playing metaphor refantazio which by legal definition is a jrpg and i am liking it. like its not topping expedition 33 for me, but i do like this game.

I've been watching old videos i used to enjoy of Live A Live and was interested in playing it, but i heard that the english version of the remake adds stuff that affects the story that the JP version did'nt. Is this true? SHould i just play the SNES version if it's that bad?

That’s one of the only issues I have with the Xenoblade games, there’s a lot of sound going on and I feel like subtitles in game would’ve helped a fair bit.

There is a good fan translation of the SNES version, but I didn't find anything in the HD2D remake to be egregious in the translation.

Recently finished Racing Lagoon, a recently fan-translated game from Square's 90s era, and I have to say it's probably one of the best games Square put out in that era next to Xenogears. It's that good. It's a CaRPG which takes cues from Armored Core and Initial D which is about as batshit insane as it sounds. If you have any passing interest in that whatsoever, I'd 100% recommend playing it. The plot is also great too and surprisingly has a lot of poetry despite being a racing game. Apparently it was pretty hard to bring over to English but the guys who worked on the fan-translation did an excellent job all things considered.

It also has one of Square's best OSTs out there, with there not being a single shitty song to be heard. If you're a Jazz Fusion fan this OST is 100% for you. It also probably has my favorite victory theme in a JRPG yet this shit is a banger.

I'm just wondering where Dragon Quest XII is?
Still in development. It doesn't seem like it is taking them any longer than normal. But time flies I guess.
DQXI came out in July 2017, so that's an 8 year gap and counting now

X -> XI = 5 year gap
IX -> X = 3 year gap
VIII -> IX = 5 year gap
VII -> VIII = 4 year gap
VI -> VII = 5 year gap
V -> VI = 3 year gap
IV -> V = 2 year gap
III -> IV = 2 year gap
II -> III = 1 year gap
I -> II = 1 year gap

So that's a long gap even accounting for COVID, and UE5 allegedly being a piece of work. And with Square Enix not doing so hot these days, you'd think they'd step it up.

I wonder how much time is being taken away for those DQ remakes. They just finished remaking the Erdrick trilogy and now they're remaking VII so they have to be at least somewhat profitable. I really hope XII does come out though because it'll probably be the last work that Toriyama and Sugiyama both worked on together before passing.

Also has anybody played the full Fuga trilogy? I played the first one and liked it but I'm curious as to if the rest of the trilogy is better than the first one.

Any longer than normal for a modern big budget game, not compared to past Dragon Quest gsmes. My expectation is 5-10 years.

The cast would have been even better as a true party working together.
They still haven't fixed that issue? That was a criticism I heard about the first one, the party doesn't actually act as a party. And that's half the fun of a JRPG.

And it seems to have actually good combat. I dropped Xenoblade in the opening fight because it played like shit, like FF12 but somehow maybe worse.

That's why I'm looking forward to it too. I wish they'd gotten off their asses and did Chrono Trigger 2 before Toriyama died.

Finally got around to finishing up the third one in this series. Some Japanese dude was like "what if it's the Battle of Verdun but with furry child soldiers in an anime tank with the power of friendship" and so this idea was born.

Story's good, especially the third one which gets Xenogears-ish. Combat's pretty good, somewhat similar to FFX where there's a displayed turn order and you need to swap your furry child soldiers around so they can hit enemy weaknesses. The downside is that it's almost all combat and it can start to get a little tedious.

Verdict: worth it if you ever see them 50% off

Probably the best endorsement I could've got to continue the series. The first one was good albeit really easy if you decide to do the dangerous paths even half the time because you snowball but hearing that the story gets better with the other entries makes me hyped to continue them.

Am I missing something with the DQ remake that everyone else is groaning over? Specifically they are saying that 7's upcoming remake has ugly art and backgrounds. Imo it looks more....Pixar like which.....I thought they had been going for even during the two Warriors games?

Personally the Toriyama designs for Dragon Quest games are iconic and deviating from them in any way feels like sacrilege, especially post his death. The designs also remind me of the shitty Dragon Quest movie which isn't very inspiring.

The UI design also looks fucking atrocious. I don't particularly mind them changing the UI from the usual UI that the Dragon Quest series has had for over 40 years, but compared to when they tried it with Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 it looks like complete shit. The DQ7 one looks like some early alpha for some Steam Early Access RPG as opposed to one of the most popular and treasured JRPG franchises of all time. It also doesn't help that the MC is giving me the most soulless stare in this image. I'm willing to give the menu UI some time as this is a prerelease image but they were clearly proud enough of the menu design that they felt they had to show it to the public so it's fair grounds to be criticized.

The snowballing is real, and it's belt to ass on every boss if you're doing all the dangerous routes and cooking the stuff that gives you bonus EXP and S-rank all the normal encounters.

I don't think this is great game design, but...I guess it feels nice to be rewarded for playing the game well.
