Anyone with a lick of sense would ask someone who's done time. The Marine Corps liked to hold itself to a higher standard than the Army (at times), and one of the jokes was the Army had a waiver for everything; and during the 9/11 timeframe, they were taking people with waivers for everything up to grand theft auto; pretty sure weapons, violence, and rape were the three things they couldn't waive (but under the right circumstances I'm sure they'll make exceptions). Once they realize money isn't cutting it, they're gonna start taking the illiterate Juans and Pookie and RayRay.

I would assume so because the efforts to recruit during the 2000s took a huge hit that they never fully recovered from. But that doesn’t really exist now. Those guys are either in the “it’s just a waste of time” camp or the “why the f would I fight for this”.

I knew a LOT of the brothers who passed on it. Didn't want it, said they wouldn't need the college when they got out. Heard more than one of the brothers say that GI Bill was a white man thing and a scam.

They gave them some, but my understanding was that it was like one Mosin Nagant per 20 convicts. If you're going to do it, it is the smartest way to do it but it's still incredibly risky and arguably not worth it. Most of those convicts did little more than make German soldiers waste ammo which given the situation was a nice benefit. On the flip side of that though, I seriously doubt Vasily Zaitsev would have gotten the kill count he did if it wasn't for the human waves acting as sort of a screen. He was a great sniper, but if you really look at his kill count, there was a massive spike at Stalingrad, where there was the highest rate of Red Army forces using the cannon fodder approach.

The GI Bill was voluntary. You agreed to pay in $100/mo for a year, for one year.

Afterwards you got the GI Bill, which, in the mid-1990's at the college I went to, was a couple hundred a month in addition to living expenses in cash, as well as tuition and books. You could also buy up, which increased your benefits, with certain MOS's and stuff. I went for buy-up at $300/mo for a year. The increased benefits were fucking awesome.
