When you signed up, they asked you if you wanted in on the GI Bill. You had to pay $100 a month for a year (This was back when you got, before taxes, about $750/mo) and then you'd get your GI Bill.

I knew a LOT of the brothers who passed on it. Didn't want it, said they wouldn't need the college when they got out. Heard more than one of the brothers say that GI Bill was a white man thing and a scam.
