Seriously! I have no beef against people who want to use color in their makeup, but holy shit. There's a difference between adding fun pops of color and dipping your toes in freakin' CLOWN MAKEUP territory. Almost every eye makeup look I see on "gurus" these days reminds me of Mimi from the Drew Carrey Show. And I really don't think I'm over-exaggerating. I look at the Jeffree Star eyeshadow palettes and think, "How the fuck can I make a wearable eye look with all of these clashing colors?" I feel like his Blood Sugar palette is the most cohesive-looking one, but the colors themselves just don't look appealing to me. Red and pink eyeshadows immediately make me think of skin irritation. Sexy! /sarcasm

I know that she "sold out" after a few years, but I really do miss the days when Michelle Phan was the most popular beauty YouTuber. These days, I've seen a lot of people say shit like "She was never good at putting on makeup anyway." Well, say what you want, but in videos like the one I posted below, the eye look is simple, glam, and WEARABLE. It also doesn't require spending an hour in the fucking mirror to apply. lol.

An old school beauty YouTuber I used to love, Panacea81, has started to post videos semi-regularly again. Her new videos feel like a time capsule from 2009, and I genuinely mean that in the best way. She's so charming and laid back on camera. It really does feel like a friend is just chit chatting with you while she's putting on her makeup.

While I do find someone like Jeffree Star entertaining in comparison to most of the other beauty gurus out there, give me old school YouTube over him anyday.

His packaging design is so mediocre. I understand it's "his vision" but the designs are so obvious and lackluster, and not to mention his bad habit of cribbing other makeup package designs. His company isn't going to dissolve anytime soon, so he should fork up the money to hire a better product designer or for better packaging materials.

To be fair, I know nothing about production costs. Even just adding a very elaborate but eye catching illustration is better than just glitzy typography on plan packaging.

I was interested in pitching an idea for a palette in lieu of Shane Dawson's series on him, but I don't want him to steal the mockup lmao.

There's an androgynous gay ASMRtist who has a decent setup and a nice accent, so I watch his videos. Predictably he's a slut for Jeffree and has at least three videos (out of maybe fifteen) relating to Star. One of the videos is a non-ASMR video where he applies makeup to himself from a Jeffree Star palette. It's funny because he clearly thinks he's some kind of great artist, but he ends up looking like a kid finger-painted on his face.

It was the "Thirsty" palette with colors like bright lemon yellow and neon aqua blue and vivid orange. I really can't think of a situation where someone would wear a bright lemon yellow eyeshadow and not look tacky, unless it was for some kind of cosplay or stage makeup.

Michele was good in her beginnings (at least in terms of content, she's always been involved in sketchy shit) but she got a point where she was added so many purple filters to her videos that the colours shown weren't actually what they were. It was hilarious actually, she described an eyeshadow as grey and then applied it but when you searched up the product online it was actually orange!
Then came all the fillers and surgery which totally fucked up her face. Then the lies, the scams, the plagiarism, her terrible makeup lines, her video editing giving her a magical chin, etc
Honestly Michele was as messy as Jeffree if not more at times. I kind of wish she was more active still, she was a great lolcow. She really needs to stop her "spiritual journey" and go back to video editing. She got pretty good at it, I wouldn't have known her chin wasn't all fillers and was part basically CGI if she hadn't slightly messed up one video
What Jeffree has going for him though compared to a lot of other beauty gurus (and YouTubers as a whole honestly) is that he's pretty good at business ventures and setting trends. I'm honestly really tired of most current beauty trends but hey, props there at least. Though the biggest thing I wish would change for him and all other beauty gurus is that they'd do better reviews. They test the products once, maybe do one wear test in perfect beauty lights around the house and that's it. It would be laughable to act like these people are really anything more than demo advertising for the most part, so they should at least get good at it

To this day, it absolutely blows my mind how much Michelle Phan fucked up her face. She was absolutely GORGEOUS before. I guess she admitted to her plastic surgery mistakes in her "Why I Left" video, though ... So at least she knows she made a mistake on that front?

And, yeah, I remember the controversies surrounding her after she made it big. I did unsubscribe from her once I was aware of them ... And I'm even more glad I unsubbed when I did because her videos started to become much more commercial and uninteresting at a rapid pace. But still ... I hold quite a bit of nostalgia for her oldest videos, when she first started.

With all of his messiness, I do have a certain amount of respect for Jeffree Star. Dude knows how to run businesses and make a brand for himself ... And correct me if I'm wrong, but of ALL the controversies he's been a part of, at least he's never been part of any scamming controversies?

His controversies have been along the interpersonal lines and not scamming. Catty girl fights basically.

Yeah, at worst he has made the bad business decision to fight people who speak negatively about his brand or products but he's cooled off since then though the damage was done and many people don't review his products as harsh or put it to a lot of test compared to other products now. Maybe not always consciously but it's still a thing
Aside from previous bad pr, Jeffree has really kept his brand association quite tight in terms of his actual cosmetics with the exception of his previous Manny collab. He's only allowing it to be sold in specific stores when not e-commerce in countries that likely barely even know who he is (almost growing his brand through the products alone there) and his association with Morphe is quite smart in the age of influencers despite them being a pretty shit company. Even then, his association with them pretty much ends at them carrying his products on a face value so if they up and exploded in controversy Jeffree could pull his products from their shelves and regardless of his actual involvement with the company, most people will only know them as a designated retailer for his brand. Personally I think he has a large share or investment in the company but he's smart enough to not give out the details sparing him their controversy (especially as I don't think he's ever used their products in a video except maybe once)

"Only allowing it to be sold" bitch please! Vendors like sephora, ulta, macys etc. would never carry his shit. You're really reaching.

Jeffree was never a reviewer he's a glorified QVC whore like the rest. That's why so few of these big makeup channels do in-depth reviews or talk about a product later down the line. They don't care about reviews, they are getting paid to promote products or at the very least have shit sent to them for free but still have the incentive to give positive ~~first impressions so they can keep getting free shit.

I don't know, I've seen Jeffree Star go completely savage against some brands of makeup with a lot of hype surrounding them. He's been taken off of some PR lists because of it, too.

But you're right: The vast, VAST majority of makeup reviews these days are completely worthless. Most of these beauty gurus just do swatches of something, give a "review," and then never touch the damn product again. Very few beauty channels these days actually REVIEW the product and wear it all day as a part of their review.

Off the thread topic, but this is why I use Temptalia for reviews; the woman running it will actually tell you how long the product lasts and won't give a product a high grade just for being a prestige brand.

Makeup trends have been getting more and more and more intense lately--contour, false eyelashes, highlighter, really ridiculous colors. The only remaining drag queen technique left to steal is glueing down your brows to draw on new ones, which I predict will happen in about six months. Then everyone will switch to Glossier.

I'd disagree that Sephora wouldn't just cause they'll add pretty much anything these days and legit makeup companies are doing collabs with YouTubers and have been for a while. No not Dior, but the stuff you'd find in Sephora like Becca, urban decay, two-faced, etc have all done beauty guru collabs cause they know the advertising and association works. That's why gurus have so much pr, native or influencer-based advertising is the way to go in today's generation. Even smaller YouTubers are getting brand deals. Are they taken seriously by the industry? Hell no but their value to brands is still there
And yeah, obviously I'm not naive enough to not see the monetary incentive behind pumping out a bunch of first impressions videos even if you weren't directly paid for them and to give good reviews, but that won't stop me from wishing it wasn't a thing and that they'd all put in more effort into their damn job

That's the thing hun, their job isn't to be reviewers. They are "influencers" their job is to showcase new products. So, they are doing their jobs.

Do you watch Beauty News on youtube? They have some really good content. Not all of it is good, but I recommend you subscribe if you aren't already. I especially love it when they destroy makeup.

Another tip for finding better reviews on youtube is to search for a product and then click "filters" and select "date added". This will show the search results chronologically, without any algorithim influence (youtube is obviously going to push the biggest channels if you don't filter the results). This way you can find so many youtube channels you hadn't seen before because they don't get promoted by the youtube machine. I have found a lot of good REVIEWS by doing that. Saved me from buying some shit palettes let me tell you...

Ooh, that's a good idea for the algorithm thing
I've actually subscribed to the girls for a while (I went down a rabbit hole of watching makeup destruction videos and weirdly enough some of those videos are pretty good reviews) and I do like most of their content. Their subculture destruction was really interesting to see the change from pressing it by hand. There's this guy called Nadi who is kind of over the top but he seems honest so far as well (at the very least I find him entertaining). Only one person I've ever found on YouTube does week long tests of foundations but I can't remember her name right now unfortunately

If you want to talk about beauty-related stuff, there’s a thread for that. This thread is veering off topic.

Do the production costs even matter when it comes to Jeffree Star? That guy's fucking rich. Seriously, he has like a whole life-sized barbie mansion that's so big it could probably house all the homeless people in NYC and LA combined, + an entire room just for expensive bags and accessories. I don't think production costs are a problem for him, he's just unoriginal as fuck.

The only eyeshadow palette of his where I think the packaging looks cool is the Blood Sugar palette. The rest of them definitely remind me of "2007 Scene Kid at Hot Topic" aesthetic ... Which is oddly appropriate for Jeffree Star since he was huge on MySpace back in the day?

I think his designs work from a marketing standpoint. His aesthetic appeals to Millennials who were teenagers back in 2007, and his designs look young ... So it probably appeals to the younger crowd as well (and we all know that the young crowd is the biggest demographic on YouTube these days). So he's got the young crowd and a nostalgic crowd. Makes sense as to why his stuff sells.

That aesthetic just isn't my taste, though. And good lord, the shape of the Alien Palette is the least functional and least travel-friendly thing ever.

Well, his alien palette is identical to another alien palette from Hot Topic so...
