'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Gee, wonder why crime is up by triple-percentages in Chicago? Oh well, guess we should just be glad Kim is "committed to safety" otherwise, EVERYONE would be dead, I guess...

Malice? Incompetence? Laziness? Stupidity? Corruption? Hey it's fucking Chicago it can be all five.

Oh I believe accusations against Hollywood goblins, just not when they're made by other Hollywood goblins, pretty much. And the whole Smullit family is such a bunch of goblins that any day now some dude with PTSD and a pot helm is gonna show up and slay the fuck out of them.

I believe them all the same, I just don't sympathize with them, because they're a bunch of used up whores, mad that they're now 40 and trying to fuck them feels like throwing a sausage down a highway tunnel, while the big shot degenerates are perfectly happy sodomizing the hundreds of perky 18 (or 12...) year olds who are willing to do literally anything for a chance at a side role in a big movie. I hope everyone involved except the children gets turboAIDS and dies in debilitating agony.

was it ever confirmed/unconfirmed that he's related to whatever politician?

I already knew Kamala Harris was mixed up in this but I didn't know there were actually two 2020 Dem hopefuls involved...
Michael Avenatti is sent subpoena in latest twist in Jussie Smollett case

The subpoena requested Avenatti to produce “all documents related to any offers made by Avenatti on behalf of his clients, the Osundairo brothers — and any documentation for other offers made to Smollett on behalf of his clients requesting money for the Osundairos,” said William Quinlan, Smollett’s Chicago attorney.

Translation: Any offers might show if there was an attempt to get a financial payoff to maintain the brothers’ silence, Quinlan alleged.

Jussie Smollett to Make Feature Directorial Debut With James Earl Hardy Book Adaptation (a)

Jussie Smollett is preparing his feature directorial debut with B-Boy Blues, an adaptation of James Earl Hardy's classic 1994 novel.

The film will go into production on Oct. 17 in New York City. The musician and former Empire actor has previously directed two episodes of the Fox series and several music videos.

Smollett's recently-formed SuperMassive Movies, an ancillary label of his Story Worthy Pictures banner, will produce. Per the company, SuperMassive has raised "mid-seven figures" in a partnership with Cleveland-based investor Tom Wilson to finance small-budget films from minority filmmakers.

Smollett will produce the film alongside author Hardy, investor Wilson, Frank Gatson, Sampson McCormick and Madia Hill Scott.

Former music journalist Hardy's 1994 book B-Boy Blues centers on a complicated romantic relationship between two Black men: one, a journalist, and the other, a bike messenger. The novel kicked off a series of five more books — including 2nd Time Around, If Only For One Nite, The Day Eazy-E Died, Love The One You're With and A House is Not a Home — and one short story (“Is It Still Jood To Ya?”). B-Boy Blues was a finalist for a 1995 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT/Small Press Title and has been previously adapted (by Hardy) for the stage.

Smollett continues to face legal charges from an alleged attack he reported in Chicago in early 2019. At the time, the actor said two masked men had beaten him and put a noose around his neck while telling him, "This is MAGA country." While Cook County prosecutors initially dropped charges that Smollett had lied to the police about the attack, which they said he staged himself, in March 2019, a special prosecutor brought six new charges in February. In a September court hearing, Smollett and his legal team argued the charges should be dropped, an ask that was denied by a judge. Smollett has pleaded not guilty to restored charges.

I cannot wait to see this movie inevitably bomb in the box office. His name is poison, his shitty film will be laughed at and then forgotten in time.

Juicy Juice Smollett should fuck off and get a decent job as a sandwich artist at Subway, he would be a much more respected member of society as opposed to what he is doing right now.

He never would have found himself roaming around MAGA Country in the wee hours of the morning if he were capable of that.

It will never get made, or at least directed by Smollett. The financing is a joke and reeks of bullshit. None of the people he lists as backers have the juice to finance a film.

This is just a PR stunt by Jussie to make him look like he’s more than a fuck boi d-list actor with the charges of a fake lynching hanging over his head.

No legitimate studio, investors, producers or even sane ppl would want any project to be tied to Smollett’s name.

I figure he’s just giving some old homos a few blow jobs for promises of “financing” or some cash. I figure whoever “Tom Wilson of Cleveland” gets to put Jussie on speed dial for booty calls now. (Only Tom Wilson is Cleveland of any financial note is some old white dude who owns a radio station and has never produced films)

'Classic' books nobody ever heard of, about gay black men. Stunning and brave, written by a man that can't spell and read by nobody. Obviously some kind of PR stunt for Jussie to play like he has momentum as an actor and Hollywood type.

Nobody cares about gay black men except virtue signalling soyboys, which is why Moonlight won an Oscar despite nobody seeing it.

A lot of tech companies screened Moonlight because of its progressive message. I don't know anyone who isn't isn't in tech, black, or jewish that saw it.

It’s a hilariously bad series. Just google the book and have a laugh at the cover art if you don’t want to read the godawful excerpts. James Baldwin would use their pages as toilet paper.

The only audience for “gay black movies” is white people - white liberals and white gay guys that love black cock. The closest the black community gets to supporting gay cinema is Madea Goes to Jail.

The way liberals demand white people suck troon cock as the most femme thing ever but give the entire black community a pass for raging homophobia is hilarious. The only people allowed to hate gay ppl are blacks and Muslims.

Anyone who wants to turn some shitty Hardy book into a movie is going to have to fuck a lot of old rich white queens in Hollywood.

I think his stunt shows he'd be an awful director anyhow,

Depends on if they can get a half-decent scriptwriter. The direction and casting choices weren't terrible for his hoax, but to call the plot... contrived would be an understatement.
Nah, the casting choices were abysmal. I can get playing against type, but you shouldn't have two black dudes play your Klansmen.

Know it's a more than a year silent thread but it seemed worth dragging it from the depths since someone's going to court this week.

CHICAGO -- Jussie Smollett goes to trial Monday on charges that he lied to Chicago police when the former “Empire” actor and R&B singer reported being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack nearly three years ago. Some key moments in the story:

Jan. 22, 2019

— Smollett receives a racist and homophobic threatening letter at the studio in Chicago where "Empire" is filmed. Police later say they believe Smollett sent the letter himself.

Jan. 29, 2019

Jussie Smollett tells police he was attacked by two men in downtown Chicago at 2 a.m. The actor says the men used racist and homophobic slurs, wrapped a rope around his neck and poured an "unknown substance" on him. Police say Smollett, who is Black and gay, told detectives the attackers also yelled he was in "MAGA country," an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan that some Trump critics call racist and discriminatory.

Jan. 30, 2019

— Chicago police say they've reviewed hundreds of hours of surveillance camera footage, including of Smollett walking downtown, but none shows the attack. Police obtain and release images of two people they want to question, calling them "persons of interest."

— Reports of an assault on Smollett draw outrage and support for him on social media from some politicians and celebrities.

Jan. 31, 2019

— Smollett's family issues a statement calling the attack a hate crime and disputing claims that he changed his story.

Feb. 1, 2019

— Smollett issues a statement saying he's OK, that he's working with authorities and has been "100 percent factual and consistent on every level."

Feb. 2, 2019

— Smollett opens a concert in West Hollywood, California, with an emotional speech, saying he had to play the show because he couldn't let his attackers win.

Feb. 13, 2019

— Chicago police pick up two Nigerian brothers at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport after police learn at least one worked on "Empire." Police question them and search their apartment.

Feb. 15, 2019

— Chicago police release the brothers without charges after arresting them on suspicion of assault and holding them for nearly 48 hours. A police spokesman says they're no longer suspects.

Feb. 16, 2019

— Police say the investigation has "shifted" after detectives questioned the brothers, and request a follow-up interview with Smollett. His lawyers say he feels "victimized" by reports that he played a role in the assault.

Feb. 17, 2019

— Chicago police reach out to Smollett's attorney saying they still want to interview him again because new information has "shifted" their investigation.

Feb. 19, 2019

— Chicago's top prosecutor, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, recuses herself from the investigation. Her office says the decision was made "out of an abundance of caution ... to address potential questions of impartiality based upon familiarity with potential witnesses in the case."

Feb. 20, 2019

— Prosecutors charge Smollett with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report about the alleged attack.

Feb. 21, 2019

— Chicago police say Smollett surrenders to face a felony charge of disorderly conduct, punishable by up to three years in prison.

— Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says Smollett staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted publicity. Investigators say they have a $3,500 check that Smollett used to pay the two brothers to help him.

Feb. 22, 2019

— “Empire” producers say Smollett's character to be removed from the final two episodes of the season.

April 11, 2019

— The city of Chicago files a lawsuit seeking to recoup the investigation costs.

April 15, 2019

— The Cook County State's Attorney's Office releases thousands of documents in the Smollett case in response to open records requests, including a text from Foxx calling Smollett a “washed up celeb” who was overcharged.

April 23, 2019

— The brothers who said they helped Smollett stage the attack file a defamation lawsuit against the actor's attorneys.

Aug. 23, 2019

— Judge names former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb as special prosecutor to investigate why charges against Smollett were dropped.

Feb. 11, 2020

— Webb says grand jury returns six-count indictment against Smollett, accusing him of lying to police.

Feb. 24, 2020

— Smollett pleads not guilty to restored charges.

Oct. 15, 2021

— Judge James Linn denies a last-ditch effort to dismiss the criminal case against Smollett and sets his trial for Nov. 29.
Personally I suspect he's getting a slap on the wrist, a guilty conviction but will continue to maintain his innocence.

So he just entered the court room and jury selection has begun. Unlike Ghislaine Maxwell it's not a federal crime so they're allowed to do TV coverage from inside, I think. Just had footage of him exiting the car and going in - hopefully we get more. Maybe with him being a (3rd rate) celebrity it wont get buried so hard.

As to whether he gets a slap on the wrist, well... he has Obama connections does he not but this is a Felony charge and a big deal. We got this huge circus when Kyle Rittenhouse killed two people in self-defence. If Smollet had actually pulled this off there would be twenty times that number of deaths because he almost certainly would have kicked off major race riots.

He's apparently sticking the oh-so-plausible original story of two Maga hat wearing Yetis roaming through the Chicago winter in search of gay Black actors to terrorise.

Chicago police / prosecution (not sure which) also making the claim that his motivation was to further his career. Personally, given close ties with DA and Dem leaders and timing, pretty sure his main goal was political agenda.

EDIT: Ah, crap. Judge has decided that there will be NOT cameras in the court house. :(

I'm sure Bussy is upset that there's no TV audience to demonstrate his Streep-level acting skills.

Honestly don't know. On the one-hand there is a lot of evidence to find him guilty with and he would look like an ass on national TV. On the other hand he's also dumb enough and egotistical enough to think he wont.

In either case, it's not his call and I couldn't see anything that suggested it wasn't just the judge's personal decision. Which might mean the judge wants to give him a slap on the wrist and doesn't want a tonne of people seeing that he shouldn't when they watch the actual evidence. Or maybe the judge just dislikes televised trials. I don't know how to find out who the judge is in this case.

EDIT: Apparently the prosecution has been forbidden from calling Kim Foxx as a witness. :(
