'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Especially because homosexuality is looked down upon in West Africa. Heavily.

U.S. judge dismisses actor Jussie Smollett's lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution

A U.S. federal judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett who accused the city of Chicago of malicious prosecution in concluding that his claim to having been the victim of a racist and homophobic beating was a hoax.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall said in the ruling, published on the court’s website, that Smollett “cannot bring a state malicious claim until proceedings against him have been terminated.”

The judge was referring to renewed felony charges filed in February against the actor of having made false reports to police about being attacked on the street in a hate crime that he is accused of staging in a bid to advance his career. Smollett pleaded not guilty.

Smollett, 37, best known for his work on the Fox drama “Empire,” filed the lawsuit in November after Chicago sued him to try to recoup $130,106 in police overtime costs to investigate the beating claim.

He had accused the city, police and others of causing “substantial economic damages as well as reputational harm, humiliation, mental anguish and extreme emotional distress,” and was seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

The Chicago Police Department’s motive was to bring Smollett to justice “for a crime it had probable cause to think he committed,” according to the judge’s Wednesday ruling filed with the district court in the Northern District of Illinois.

It looks like the leverage Jussie hoped for to save him from facing trial won't be materialising. I doubt that he has any more political favors to call upon, either. Here's hoping the city drags him into open court, or at least strikes a plea deal that requires a full confession.

Very nice. This is a federal doctrine called Younger abstention. Suck it!

The general principle here is that federal courts are not superior to state courts. You do not get to bypass state court proceedings by bringing a federal suit against them. State court losers don't get to treat the federal courts as some kind of bypass to doing their time. And apparently at least one federal judge is of the opinion that the state prosecution of Jussie Smollett is not over. I mean, this is obvious to anyone with a functioning brain, but Jussie and his dumbass lawyer were previously apparently unaware of this fact.

Considering the Two Guys from Nigeria are suing Jussie's counsel for defamation for making statements insinuating they made homophobic comments in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if he's got himself a dumb one indeed.

I am sooooo looking forward to this clowns trial. It should be televised all over, just like his fake claims and bs were broadcast all over the world. I bet all his family shows up surrounding him looking like the rejects from janet jacksons rhythm nation video from decades ago.

I would not be surprised to discover he is into child porn or child molestation. This is not something that i say lightly at all. Ive noticed that he seems to be one of those people who wants to be seen as a great mentor or savior of children but is really a pedo. One of his music videos had him dressed in white and had joyful children in white rushing to hug him and and swarm him to the ground and then are all over him as if he were his children and he was a returning war hero.

He seems to target kids as wanting to be a role model for them but it is easy to see he is looking to get fans who are young and stupid. Adults are disgusted by him and want nothing to do with him. He really seems to have some kind of complex about being a strong black gay savior who will.save the next generation with his music and fake persona. Plus he is getting up there in age so he thinks being cool with kids shows how hip he is.

Oh and i bet his real bf aint too happy about jussie being at the gay bathhouse with the O bro. Hilarious that this comes out and all because this clown brought it on himself with. If he would just fess up, be remorseful and stop the bs then he would have been forgiven and forgotten. But he wont admit he lied so more and more bad chit about him keeps coming out which is so glorious. I hope more dirt like this comes out in the trial.

Judge said that normally he might be entitled to privacy but since he and his lawyers decided to be so public aand do interviews and press conferences that the public is entitled to see the whole truth.

Uh oh, the Judge just told Jussie that if he's gonna claim he has the Aurora Borealis in his kitchen, he has to SHOW it to us too....
 
This honestly doesn't surprise me. Those privacy laws are to be a shield for the prosecuted against malicious attack. As soon as Jussie used them instead as a weapon, he lost the right to them.
