So earlier in the day I went with a friend of mine to Rockport to check out his folks' place.
When we entered, powerlines were down and sometimes hanging pretty close over the road. There was a shit ton of debris everyone and not just from the trees, but store signs and even a big ass metal sign that got all wrapped around a tree. There were times on our way into town when we saw a load of AEP trucks working on the powerlines, so it gives me hope knowing they've already at least started to attempt to restore power, even if it's just repairing the downed powerlines first. We also saw more than a couple of National Guard convoys on the road, as well as a few patrol humvees (At least I'm assuming they were patrolling). When we got into my friend's neighborhood there was mostly just the same damage a lot sustained in Corpus: Downed trees and branches everywhere. But when we got to the apartment, holy shit.
Just about every roof had damage done to it. Shingles were scattered across the ground and some of them were impaled into the dirt about a good 8 or so inches deep. The inside had some heavy flooding done to it, thanks to the ceiling falling in and destroying some antique vases on a shelf that his parents collected. We were able to get his mother's pets out that had to stay behind during the storm (As I understand it, then had to leave them because the people they would be staying with had 2 big ass dogs, and that would not mix well with a small cat and rabbit.) as well as his computer and some other electronics from the house that weren't damaged by the storm. We attempted to do at least some cleaning, but quickly gave up as we had no idea where to start. The good news is that despite not boarding up the windows, the apartment's windows were still intact!
Also, just an FYI in case it hasn't already been announced yet or the Lugenpresse is trying to spin the story so it's worse than it sounds, only 1 person died in Rockport and that was due to a housefire. Managed to confirm it with friend's neighbors.
So we drove through town a bit and took in the destruction. Just about every building had some form of damage done to it. Tackle Town was surprisingly unscathed save for missing the "T" in Tackle. Popeye's Chicken had its windows knocked in, though I can't confirm is nogs were just trying to see if it was open after the storm and went berserk when they realized it was still closed (Sorry, had to throw in some humor to lighten the mood). A hotel they had a press conference from was absolutely fucking devastated from having the steeple at the top torn down and the parking area half collapsed. The RV parks we drove through were surprisingly intact, though we did see quite a few RVs from various parks that were either collapse or rolled over.
I was surprised at the fact that most of the residential areas were mostly untouched from the outside besides fallen trees, at least in the two neighborhoods we drove through. The historic district is completely gone, from what I've heard though. We didn't drive through it because we had to get the rabbit and cat to a safe place. But we had a feeling we wouldn't be seeing much.
Sucks that such a sleepy little fishing village had to have this shit happen to it. Seeing some of the fishing spots I went to with my mom and dad now in ruins is just fucking terrible. I'm praying that they'll recover from all this.
