Disaster Hurricane Harvey Megathread - The Before, The During, and the Chaotic Aftermath.

I've spoken to a neighbor down where we live and believe it or not, my partner and I's house is still there. It's been "badly damaged" and we don't know the extent of it, but at least it did not get totally obliterated. Seeing all the early reports of destruction and the live feeds of that guy in the car wash and stuff I just immediately thought the worst, but I was wrong thankfully. The house is going to need serious renovations and inspections and all of that, and there's still the very high possibility of loss of personal effects that needs to be addressed. Not looking forward to sorting through the debris nor working with the fucking insurance vultures, but I guess it could be a lot LOT worse right now.

I hope all of our other Texas Kiwis are as fortunate as we are, or better.

edit: We're still evacuated until Monday or Tuesday where we will try and figure out our plans.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, my fellow kiwis from Texas, and everybody who was affected by this devastating hurricane. Stay strong and safe. You'll get through this.

Like it's already been said, New Orleans is still recovering from Katrina with some areas still not rebuilt. That being said, most of the serious issues with Katrina don't seem to be an issue with Texas. Most of the devastation happened after the storm when the levees broke (of course, Harvey is a much stronger storm).
Hopefully the lessons learned after Katrina haven't been forgotten, and at the very least it seems the Texas government and Federal government have been moving resources to deal with the aftermath since before landfall which will help.
 
I'm currently hunkering down in my bathroom. There have been tornadoes spotted in my area. I've dealt with hurricanes before but never a tornado.

New Orleans has the secondary issue of being run by Democrats of the black and incompetent kind.
 
Well, power has been restored to my place. I'm gonna set my computer back to tonight so I can stop using my mobile. We're not completely out of the woods yet since the storm is supposed to make a turnaround on Monday but I've got confidence that we'll make it.

Semper Fidelis to all my fellow Texan kiwis that have been affected as well, and to all those that gave us support during this hard time.

Oh, good! At least your house is still standing! "Badly damaged" is better than "currently in a million pieces." Hopefully your luck holds out and renovating your house isn't a complete nightmare.

Again, if you can receive a care package, I'm sure your Kiwi friends would love to send you (and other Texan Kiwis) one.
 
This is getting very serious. KHOU is flooding.

And the European model shows the storm getting stronger again mid-week.

I've just watched a pretty large branch slowly drift down my street. The water's about 4 inches deep right now, and there's a shelter in place in effect until 11am (can be updated at any time)
 
Fuck... here I was thinking that this would be equivalent to the 2010/11 Queensland floods, only with a higher population density, but this, this looks almost apocalyptic, and that massive swamp network could swallow the entire Brisbane flood plain without so much as a hiccup. The climate change scientists have been yodeling about global warming increasing the severity and frequency of weather events, and, well, hate to break it to you, President Trump and Prime Minister Turnbull, it looks like global warming might actually be a thing that exists. If cyclones, hurricanes or tropical storms of this intensity begin to strike even within a decade of each other, large parts of the coast of all major continents will become effectively uninhabitable, and that's after the small islands in just about anywhere have been sanded down to the waterline.

I can't comprehend this scale of destruction. I can look at pictures and watch videos, but I'm having a hell of a time believing this is real and not a half arsed disaster film.

Hoping Houston is able to survive the storm. I have a couple of friends who live there (they've already evacuated), but of course their homes and all of their belongings are there. :(
 
This has been insane. I have never been so happy to insist on getting an apartment on the second floor. I'm in a section that's one of the highest in the city, so I'm effectively cut off on all sides with deep flooding. Some of my friends are now waiting for rescue services due to their places flooding.
 
I've got family in Houston that didn't evacuate and the water somehow hasn't reached them yet, but the brewery they work at is flooded and around 50 people are stranded there. This is some scary shit :(
