Hunt: Showdown - Louisiana Simulator

I had a hell of a gunfight tonight.

I get on a team with just one other person (one of those cases where my faggot third teammate ditched in the lobby) and at first it was going normally. We get lead to this one area that, like most places in the game, is walled off (I assume for gameplay reasons, I don't imagine people walled in every little factory like it's a Medieval castle in real life Louisiana). Now, I'm a terrible player - bad shot, rarely do anything useful, usually die - but I want to use a spyglass for a change, so I climb a tower and spy through it while my teammate is going on and advancing.

I actually see a sniper lying in wait that I wouldn't have otherwise, and I manage to pop a shot off on him that starts an exchange of gunfire where I'm keeping him suppressed. My teammate gets into the compound, winds up getting himself shot down. It comes to be clear that I'm fucked if I stay put. Stuck in a situation where my location is obvious, my gunfire has drawn a herd of hellhounds around me (but I can't get an angle on them, they're at the base) and of course I have very little ammunition.

I go ahead and get down from the tower and get mauled by zombies, hellhounds and sporadic gunfire from the sniper all at once, almost bleeding out before I can get behind cover. It's one of those where if the sniper had landed another hit or I had missed a single revolver shot I would have died. Teammate has managed to get himself killed right in front of the sniper's perch way out in the open, but I save him by throwing a dynamite, reviving him, shouting at him over comms to run for it as soon as he's up. We scatter in different directions, I climb a ladder and use a sloped roof as cover to hop a wall instead of going out the gate, so I'm feeling like a tactical genius.

As we start to circle around we encounter another gunman (turns out to be a different party) and I'm already out of my rifle ammo, so it's one of those ongoing revolver duels at mid-range ducking among trees and skirmishing along a road, low damage rounds where you can break off and most shots miss anyways. The dude somehow disappears on us, we end up encountering a second one. As we fight our way towards, I wind up charging in, have a point-blank mutual kill (both parties turn the corner, gun each other down in one mutual salvo with the revolvers). My teammate kills one of that party and revives me and we beat a retreat back to the extraction point that's nearby.

The actual team that got the bounty must have chosen the long way home (why not?), but we take fire from some concealed sniper (never figured out where from) and wind up having a riverside ambush by the steamer where these two different guys are trying to shoot their way in. In the end EVERYONE extracts from the SAME steamer.


In another match we were taking fire from one direction when this motherfucker with a hammer, I think a solo, comes running out of the woods from behind us. I hear him first, the rustling grass, but there's so many trees and I'm a piss poor shot, and he just comes in smashing our heads in like a fucking Indian. Last words I got out were congratulating him on his ambush.


And my proudest was going totally solo (to try to get better) and managing to gun down three different players from the same position, a little building that had a line of sight on the gate to the monster's den. I actually manage to plug three separate people before someone got me through penetrating the wall.


One of the things I really like about the game is that it actually has one of the most realistic feeling maps I've ever seen. In a lot of open world games there's no real thought put into the design of the world in terms of its economy, society, how it functions. You know, one small crop farm and then 10,000 bandits.

In Showdown it nails the feeling of a rural industrial landscape where there are, on a given map, at least several farms, usually a town area, cabins and stuff scattered throughout, wilderness areas, and then all sorts of practical workshop type areas scattered about too. It's not accurate accurate, but it is (and I'm comparing it to things like Red Dead Redemption 2) the most convincing place I've played in feeling like a plausible, real world county. The variety is good with a typical map having regular farms, plantations (not as many as I would like, really only one that I remember), churches and graveyards, prisons and Civil War forts and earlier cruder wooden frontier-style forts, coal mine (in a corner, bit of a shame the mine/company town area rarely comes into play), quarries and lumberyards and factories, and so on.

De Salle is my favorite, though, the town proper.
 
Apparently they're making a Hunt Showdown sequel set in "the north." Which was a Western-ish setting, so "the north" must mean Alaska, Canada or the Rocky Mountain states.

I have mixed feelings. They couldn't just do more Louisiana forever, and although I like the swampy/gothic Southern setting I don't think elsewhere in the South would be different enough either.

But I feel like what made the game's world so nice was the personality dripping off everything, and the Great White North doesn't have that, I feel. Not in a way that's unique. I'd rather see the Southwest or, I think better, rural New England.
 
Don’t really have a long story but had a match on Delta, we wiped the entire server and wanted to do lockjaw for extra cred. So we started to leave and both fucking bounties were right next to each other, I have never seen this before.

Future update. Some guesses on how it works means that compact ammo get fucked over since the damage dropoff is when the bullet drop begins ergo if you've lined a headshot on someone with a conversion pistol, you have to obscure their head with your gun to ensure the shot will actually connect with their head. It might see a transition to a purely one-shot close range weapons vs long ammo meta.

I can also relate to the teammate thing. They're someone who blames certain unfair (in their mind) weapons or slimeball tactics by the baddies in their deaths rather than any culpability in their part. I'm someone who, if I keep dying, I usually attribute to something I'm doing wrong. Positioning, set up, misjudged shot, sensitivity, etcetera.

Play solo.

I've been getting used to doing that. Learning to think of it as a totally different game than team vs team. Both are for PvP, ultimately, but in solo I'll just move a lot slower without any expectation of even trying to win, just kill who I come across and survive. Engage when I can but retreat if it goes badly. If I'm not going to kill a monster by myself I might as well let someone else find it, which means I can kind of rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise pattern into the goal instead of moving straight towards it and getting blindsided. I have yet to be just gunned down out of nowhere in solo. Usually I do end up dying in a gunfight but I have extracted before.

Edit: I basically view solo as a hunting game with the distinct possibility of failure. Hunting game in the sense that you're slowly working some terrain with the acceptance that you may not even engage.

My Hunt bro is not so whinny, the problem with him is that he shits the bed under pressure. He'll usually make one bad call at the start of an engagement. Shoot when he has no clear line of sight, sprint when he could've kept on sneaking. Stuff like that. Or risk it all to pick me up when he has no clue where I was shot from. If we both survive his first bad call, we are usually cool.

Play solo.

I've played Hunt like that for a couple of years at this point lol. It's really engaging, don't get me wrong. But I'm pretty sick of being tag-teamed or being third partied when I'm already at a disadvantage by going solo.
 
Had some shit trios on ps5. One game I basically kill the boss solo, a butcher. He somehow merced both my teammates at once and camped their corpses. Kill him, revive the two idiots, and begin banishing. One of them starts moving off onto the distance. I think he's taking a sniper position and pay no mind. The other starts running around and gets downed. I kill the guy who did it, revive the idiot again, then get shot in the ass. I retreat behind the nearby building, heal, then rotate to the chokepoint on the other side. I'm staring at this fucking choke for 5 seconds and then get shot out and downed of nowhere.( I legit thought maybe I'm going blind, but going through the recording there is legit no player model on screen. Left peak advantage is insane.)

So I spectate the guy I just saved. He's finishing healing then runs my way. He runs past my body that was behind cover, peaks the guy who killed me, has him dead to rights at 20 m, but gets spooked by some dynamite and decides to break cover... and run right up to the guy. Both of them start hip firing each other, point blank, missing every shot. Eventually the enemy hunter gets fed up and throws a concertina, missing entirely. And, no shit, my teammate takes one look at it, think about it for a sec... and runs right into it, dying. I switch to the guy who ran off earlier and he's extracting like a fucking coward. Fuck I hate this game sometimes.

There was a good round later though. Trios again, but one guy disconnects immediately. I write this one off as a loss and just decide to play chill. We kill the spider and start banishing, then notice another group taking up position in the only house right next to the lair. I shoot the nearby barrels and lob some concertina and basically lock them in. We kill everyone on the first floor and another group trying to third party and are about to leave when we hear on proximity chat some pos who was hiding out in the attic screaming at his teammates "how could you fucking die, there only fucking two of them!" Me and the other guy take one look at each other, walk back into the burning building and finish him off while he's still screaming. Funny thing is we had our guard down after the first fight, he absolutely could have revived his team quietly and got the drop on us. Remember lads: the ps5 controller mic defaults to on lmao

Playing solo is even better when you run with necro. Getting up to like 4 self revives is great if you have good game sense and patience. I've sat at the death screen for a good 5 minutes, just to revive and get the fuck out of dodge, saving my character many times.

They unfucked the UI.

So far my impressions are these

1) Bullet drop is here and I hate it

2) The new UI is very convenient. There are some flaws, mainly concerning it whoring paid hunters (which I mostly hate, I hate how tryhard scary/goff they are and they get more absurd over time), but if you already have free hunters on hand you can basic press a few keyboard buttons, slightly flick your mouse, and be right into a match.

3) You will then notice how fuck ugly the graphics are now. I don't know what has gone wrong, but I swear they did something to textures and lighting. Hunt always had problems with textures needing to load in at the start of matches and it's a million times worse now, which is especially problematic when you play Bounty Clash (where there IS NO time for that). I also saw shit like zombies just up and disappearing.

4) Now there's a mode, Bounty Clash, for quick shootouts. It basically takes the part of the game I actually play for (siege scenarios around the bounty) and just sets you off at the start of that, monster's dead, it's a race to get to it, everyone starts in the area. This isn't satisfying in the way a real bounty hunt is, because a huge part of the satisfaction of this game comes from the dynamic way gunfights erupt. But it is VERY good in that it lets you practice gunfighting and have the option of a 15 minute match, guaranteed shootout, compared the complete crapshoot and promise of tedium that bounty hunts were. I appreciate having the option.

5) Mammon's Gulch is meh. The new map has a cold-but-not-snow feeling with a ton of verticality. The verticality is the big thing, you have proper mountains and canyons and such now. I haven't been on it enough to really pass judgment, but at first glance I don't think it has that great feeling of reality that the Louisiana maps did. Those felt like real places with real economies. Here you've got the usual oil fields and silver mines and stuff, but it feels more haphazardly thrown together. But I could be bitching about absolutely nothing, I haven't hardly played on it yet outside of Clash. The vibes are not there.

I think the issues is their updated engine, it seems they trying to scale it back so it doesn't run like shit, as there were complaints about people having issues in certain areas of the map.

I get very odd RDR2 vibes from this map and I dunno why, but just feels like that game was a big inspiration for this place. This place is definatly gook/sniper heaven, specially in the mines or on hills.
 
I hate how the events all give you an insane crutch perk that you cant help but love using and then its just removed with a slight chance of maybe it will come back
