I can't seem to find a thread on this game so I was interested if any other kiwi's play Hunt: Showdown. I first saw the game a few years ago but I only decided to start playing a few days ago. So far I am absolutely loving it

From wikipedia:
Set in the late 19th century, Hunt: Showdown takes place in an area of rural Louisiana, where a mysterious illness has turned much of the local population into mindless monstrosities. Most rise as zombie-like "Grunts", but others are twisted into more inhuman creatures by unknown forces. To make matters worse, demonic creatures from other realms are leaking into the real world. To solve this issue, players control hunters contracted by the mysterious American Hunters Association who enter monster-infested area, track down, and then kill a powerful "boss" creature. However, other players are also present in the game map, either solo or in groups of up to three people. Player-controlled hunters may kill other hunters and compete for the chance to be the first to track and kill the boss.

There's a lot of period authentic firearms for those who like old guns (circa 1899, like RDR 2). Springfield trapdoor, Lebel 1886, Mosin-Nagant, even my beloved Martini Henry. Its still missing a few must-haves, like the Krag, Rolling Block, and the Dreyse Needle gun.

The sound design is utterly fantastic. Going into some dilapidated church or decrepit crematorium hearing otherworldly wails and muffled revolver fire is atmospheric as all get out. In some ways, the game kind of reminds me of DayZ, in that you have quiet moments punctuated by tense PVP. Except unlike DayZ it doesn't involve running in the wilderness for 3 hours with no interesting things to see.

You can't go gun blazing at all times, as it gives your position away to other players and monsters. There's also a lot of environmental "traps" that might alert other players, like mortally wounded horses whinnying in pain as you approach, starving dogs and chickens in cages, stepping on broken glass or twigs, and sloshing about in the bayou swamp.

I can't say if the formula is going to get really old, but as of right now I feel like I got my money's worth (right now its on sale for $19.99 on Steam).

How can you talk about the game without showing people the main theme. It's great.

Also, some PvE elements can seriously fuck you up if you are not careful. And unlike Tarkov, geared/leveled players don't have a ridiculous advantage over you. There is no armor and every weapon kills you with a headshot. But your partner can revive you if you play with friends/random players.

I've seen the game and was interested in it, but the amount of DLC is kind of putting me off. It's on sale, though. Worth buying as a standalone or do I need the bundle?

All of the DLC is hunter and weapon skins. Note that these hunters need to be recruited first and if they die, they're gone and have to be re-recruited (for I think like 300 dollars, which is not a small amount).

There is also a "premium" currency which you can farm by playing or sometimes you get gifted some points during events. This currency can be used to also buy some hunter and weapon skins. And there are even some skins you can only unlock by doing difficult challenges or prestiging several times.

I've been playing for a little while now. It has a pretty unique aesthetic and gameplay feel to it. I like the fact that you can't armor up like in, say, Tarkov. Everyone dies to a headshot, it doesn't matter how expensive your gear is or how fast your gun can fire. Feels fair, although you will occasionally meet players who will just insta-delete you with a headshot.

Good game, and very well balanced, with little microtransactions or "current year" bullshit. That being said I suck cock at it, so fuck this game.

I love this game and I am truly, truly not very good at it. The atmosphere is wonderful and the design of the world is so rich its almost distracting at times. The world feels real yet there's a clear wrongness to so much of the monsters that occupy a lot of it. The forlorn moans of the Hives or the buzzing, almost agonized rattles of Armored infected not only give you a fantastic indication of what is around you but really put you on edge.

Then you'll turn the corner and get your ass blown off by some putz with a Romero.

Have only watched a couple of videos on it but it looks pretty good and novel. From the (early) videos I've watched there seemed to be a sense of "let's hope we don't run into other players" which built a strange and intriguing tension. Hope it does well.

The game is a number of years old now but it seems to be doing fairly well overall. The game both rewards PVP but doesn't make it a requirement to actually get ahead with a hunter or succeed at your 'mission'. So it allows you to play each situation by ear (literally given how important sound is in the game) and if you've hit a few objectives you aren't terribly shafted for taking a quiet exit.

Though it's still a game where you get heavily rewarded for taking out your opposing hunters, not to mention how much of a thrill it is to have managed to really out fight your opponents.

Hey man, it takes effort to sneak into a corner with a romero

If you're so desperate to use one thats pretty much one of your only options lmao
I'm actually pretty fond of the Romero, the one hit kill range is high and so long as you aim down sights its very reliable. Also cheap as hell.

I love this game, although I'm not too great. Huge fan of the Sparks + Caldwell Conversion Pistol combo

It's good, but I think I like this track more.
Those whines from the violin!

Another thing I love: the perk cards. They don't break the game but their just powerful enough to warrant their inclusion (save maybe the card that lets to fan your revolver). Plus, they have this aesthetic reminiscent of late 19th century catalogues with a heaping of nightmare fuel.

Yeah, the whole soundtrack is top-tier.
My personal favourite is this one:

As I keep playing, I'm really loving a lot of little details where immersion and balancing collide. For example, when you fire a gun in rapid succession like the semi-auto pistols or fan a revolver, after a few rounds the audio begins to muffle simulating ear damage. Its dangerous because sound is so vital in the game and I've been saved many a time by hearing footsteps of enemy players or hearing far off gunshots. In a way its a (very) small deterrent to spray and pray.

They also released the trailer for the Halloween event.

The Harvest. 🌽🌽:gunt:🌽🌽

The event itself looks pretty similar to the last one, so nothing special there, but the new music track sounds utterly delightful. Maybe a new favorite.

Well, since I missed the last Halloween event, this should be fun to do. Especially dig the new Hunter and ax he uses.

My first game I managed to kill someone with a shotgun and then melee his partner with the axe connected to my shotgun. I then died because a river monster found me when I was fording some body of water. 10/10.

Water Devils are one of those things that really take experiencing their speed and ferocity to really respect. At first I thought they were just a minor hazard but ohhhh no. You do not want to poke your toes into a river if you see more than one, or if one is remotely close to the ford. They also rather wisely made it where they're both low value for experience and not that easy to kill so most hunters will just circle around them rather than fight or make a lot of noise. Not worth it.

Still not as bad as Hellhounds though.
