It seems like everyone is slowly turning around in supporting The First Omen.


I just finished it. Very good. A little slow in the start but I'd give it a 9 out of 10 and it's easily the best Omen film. The director is wonderfully inspired by the world of Italian horror and the film has big time Suspiria vibes. It's amazing a movie like this got such a mainstream release. It's one of the more unpleasant mainstream horrors to come out in quite some time and I love how the film wants to make you uncomfortable which so few horror films, let alone mainstream, even try to do now (coughBlumHousecough). Not only that but there's an homage to Possession (1981) and Xtro as well.

Can't recommend enough. Check it out.

Edit: I love the spider imagery. That's a Southern Italian thing that dates back centuries where the superstitious wops regarded the tarantula as an incarnation of the devil. And if you got bit by a tarantula you were possessed by the "tarantella" and had to dance the evil out of you.

2nd edit: this was directed by a chick. Holy shit, that surprised me. There ya' go, ladies. You officially have a good horror director now. NB4 Katherine Bigelow simps appear telling me how revolutionary Near Dark is and I don't hate that movie but it's just not all that great.

I love the ideas in the Omen series but all of the movies fell short of those ideas. The Omen 4 is decent, that is my hot take for today.

Where do you start with the Puppet Master franchise? I like the concept and want lots of puppet murders with little Nazi whining. I know the concept is puppets possessed by souls the Nazis punished, does it get preachy or is it more exploitation?

Parts 1-5 and Littlest Reich. If you want the absolute best of the films between 1-5 then I would highly recommend to watch part 3 and then either 4 or 5. That's all you need. Literally, all the good Full Moon shit could be contained in parts 3, 4, and 5. After 5, the quality of the franchise falls off a mountaintop.

Littlest Reich was done by someone other than Full Moon and was written by the guy who made Bone Tomahawk, Dragged Across Concrete and Brawl in Cell Block 99 and all of which are fucking GOOD. Bone Tomahawk is a horror western with Kurt Russell BTW.

So yeah, just focus on parts 3, 4, 5, Littlest Reich, and you are good.

My biggest problem with the Puppet Master movies is if you try to make a coherent story out of the series you'll fail by the third movie. It starts with evil puppets, then Toulon is evil and wants to bring back his wife in 2, then we find out him and his wife went against the Nazis in 3 and they are good. I can't remember which one it is but one movies is just a clip show. Best to just find the ones that you like and watch them.

The continuity for the first 5 movies is pretty solid, at least if you remove part 2 out of the equation with Toulon coming back as evil. Part 2 has a lot of fun moments and introduced Torch but objectively speaking it's not very good. I do like the twisted ending of part 2 where the puppets will go on the road entertaining and slaughtering retarded children.

I read the modern comics and they can't make up their mind if Toulon is good or not in that. He cares for his friends but refuses to engage with the master to stop them being used for evil. It's all over the place but Torch is such a cool design.

Yeah I love 2 for bringing in my boy Torch but the story could have been better if it had been someone other then Toulon with the puppets. You're right about the ending. I love Torch riding shotgun.
 
Another problem with Puppet Master continuity -aside from years of important events like Toulon's escape from the Nazi's and eventual suicide- is that puppets randomly appear and disappear without explanation.

Part 2 kills off Tunneller but he's back in part 4 seemingly 100% fine. Part 3 introduces Six Shooter, but since it's a prequel, it ignores where was this character during the events of Puppet Master 1 and 2. And the instant you spend more than 5 minutes thinking about this shit is when you say "fuck it" and just watch a kill reel of these guys doing their thing with David Allen's brilliant stop motion work.

 
Finished the first movie and I enjoyed it as a psychological thriller horror film but as a puppet slasher it's a 0/10. Puppets are really underused and don't seem menacing at all. I can't make sense of why Leech woman exists because her powers useless unless you're fucking a hot chick and tied to a bed.

It's a good psychic horror film and I was very invested in the story (and the tits didn't hurt either) but it wasn't the puppet holocaust I was hoping for. I supposed the puppets become more focal as the series continues?

Part 2 is more of a slasher and has some good kills.
