They Live is not a great movie, but it is a good one, and it could not be improved with a remake, because even if the remake failed, it would not "fail" in the endearing ways the original does.
I still kind of want to slap you. The only flaw of They Live is that the 1st act is really slow. Most of the 1st act could be skipped and you get to Rowdy Roddy Piper finding the glasses. And how dare you sir, how dare you say Piper isn't a great actor. He's great in this. He was born for that role.

I'd argue They Live is an excellent example of Red Pilled horror. Another one would be Videodrome. You could go even farther with it by listing examples of Black Pilled horror like Cannibal Holocaust, Serbian Film, and Man Behind the Sun.

They Live is based. This one fight scene in particular was also great

Halfway through October, I've managed one movie/day... on average

1) The Killer Shrews (1959)
2) The Uncanny* (1979)
3) Vampyr* (1932)
4) There's Nothing Out There! (1991)
5) Deep Red* (1975)
6) The Babadook (2014)
7) Invisible Invaders (1959)
8 ) The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976)
9) Hereditary (2018 )
10) The Old Dark House (1932)
11) Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
12) Pharaoh's Curse (1957)
13) Good Boy (2023)
14) Psycho Goreman (2020)
15) The Driller Killer (1979)

* rewatch

No real misses. I found Good Boy to be a quite based and redpilled film that satisfy most viewers who were intrigued by the trailer.
I missed some days and tried to make up for them and I stopped counting at some point. Well here's where it's at:

16) An American Werewolf in London* (1981)
17) The Unknown (1927)
18 ) Shock Waves (1977)
19) The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
20) The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
21) What have you done to Solange? (1972)
22) Creature with the Atom brain (1957)
23) Cellar Dweller (1988 )
24) Eyes of Fire (1983)
25) The Raven (1963)
26) Ringu* (1998 )
27) Ringu 2 (1999)
28 ) Freaks* (1932)
29) Phantom of the Opera (1962)
30) The Phantom Carriage (1921)
31) Night Tide (1961)
32) Train to Busan (2016)
33) Frankenweenie (2012)

* rewatch

Seems sufficiently eclectic and hipstery except I skipped the whole 1940s. I'll speedrun all the Universal and Val Lewton movies again some time but not this year.

Now you've got me wondering what is the best or most Red PIlled horror. Silence of the Lambs maybe, if it counts as horror. Although it idolizes the FBI too much (not any other LE though, who are all clowns.) Sleepaway Camp? Tremors maybe. Hrm I will have to give it some thought.

If it counts as horror then I would submit Eyes Wide Shut as the ultimate Red Pilled horror film...

Other examples I'm thinking of: Manson Family (2003), Natural Born Killers (again, if it counts as horror), Dawn of the Dead, Society (1989), and maybe The Beyond?

I rewatched, for the first time in years, possibly over a decade, The Hitcher, which has a upcoming 4K release. Rutger Hauer really delivered a villainous performance for the ages in this film, with his serpentine presence. Can't believe it was received with such hostility by critics, or maybe it's not so unbelievable.

Sam Elliott was the original choice for "John Ryder", I wonder what he'd have been like. He was apparently terrifying in the tests.

To go along with my earlier viewing of Bad Moon, I stayed up late last night and watched Late Phases (2014), a more modern werewolf B-movie. (It's got some dreadful alternate title like The Night of the Wolf in some places.) I'm not exactly sure who recommended it to me. It's good, though it's kind of a mixed bag.

The setup is great: a blind Vietnam veteran who is ready to die moves into a nice townhome retirement community, and he quickly realizes something is wrong when an "animal attack" happens close to home. He decides to figure out what happened and deal with the problem himself.

Probably the biggest problem with the film is the casting of the villain. In a movie with an otherwise very solid cast (Nick Damici might be a better screenwriter than an actor, but he's mostly very good here as the lead), Lance Guest kinda sucks as the character eventually revealed to be the bad guy. You want a role like that to be played by someone who can seem normal but alternatively menacing, and Guest just comes across as hammy instead of threatening, especially when playing opposite someone as absurdly talented as Tom Noonan (as the priest).

(Also, a shout out to Dana Ashbrook for completely whiffing his one-day-shoot role as the gun shop owner. Ashbrook is a good actor who literally didn't seem to know what the fuck he was doing in this movie. I'm sure they had him for an afternoon, he learned his lines on set, and he just winged it otherwise.)

The limited budget is, strangely, handled well at the beginning of the movie but not later on. The opening half hour is very strong, with effective gore and a creature that's wisely shown only partially. But later you see more of the creature... and it ain't great. (The requisite transformation sequence late in the film is decidedly weak as well. Just don't do it if you don't have the budget for it.) It's not terrible, but if only the creature effects were as good as Bad Moon's...

The pacing feels strange, too. There's a lot to praise about the execution of the very solid script, but late in the plot they seem to want to get it all over with, and scenes that should be given more time to breathe feel rushed. (Though that doesn't apply to the action scenes. They're brief and exactly as long as they should be.) It's all strong conceptually, so you can overlook it, but I liked this movie a lot and wanted to see it stick the landing. Ditto for the score, which is solid from a composition standpoint but suffers from cheapass synth at key moments.

Anyway, I have other complaints (like you never get a sense of the retirement community as a physical place), but overall, I would recommend it if you like B movies and the premise. You can see why it's got a little bit of a cult following. Early on I wanted to say it's better than Bad Moon, but they're basically on the same level in my opinion.

I'm probably going to watch Ginger Snaps (2000) next. I guess this is my werewolf Halloween.

The three that immediately came to mind for me were Bone Tomahawk, Frailty, and Wolf Creek 2

The Hitcher is one of my all-time favorites but I've noticed that people tend to turn on the movie (without spoilers) right after the last part with Jennifer Jason Leigh's character Nash. The last 20 minutes or so are just mercilessly downbeat, which I love but can definitely see the critics hating.

I remember seeing that when I was 8 or 9 and it was a big "holy shit" moment for me. I think the Hitcher might just be a masterpiece. It is the definitive killer hitchhiker horror story.

Of all the horror films I've watched this October, Ginger Snaps (2000) might be the best of them. (Yes, I am heterosexual. Why do you ask?) The script is basically perfect, and every aspect of the production was handled well, especially given the limited budget. The cast is great. It wasn't predictable. And this is why you go practical with effects if you have a choice. Everything looks great, even now!

If you even halfway appreciated the inventiveness of Jennifer's Body, you'll love Ginger Snaps. Give it a shot, and then give the sequels a try, because apparently they're great, too.

Happy Halloween!

You gotta admit, hitchhiker killer movies that don't suck balls are few and far between.

Bernie Wrightson on his concept art for Stuart Gordon's unmade remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which Agent Orange is used to melt the pod people: "My rationale was 'These are plant creatures, so I can get as gruesome as I want.' And I did."

WRONG, NIGGA!

1: I said "horror story" and not horror film implying feature length.

2: You forgot about motherfucking Creepshow 2!

Turn in your horror fan badge because it's over. You're done. Time to go watch Five Nights At Freddy's with the rest of the sheep and then you can discuss your absolute poseur taste with horrorfan89.
