How did you like this on your first viewing? I was pretty cynical going in, and kept thinking "oh this is where they're going to ruin it," but then towards the end, they never really did, and I figured out that I'd actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Even though it's gay and feels-y, it's still good. I guess because they're all Canadians, and can get away with that kind of shit.
It reminded me of South Park or a fairly polished Troma movie. Funny although the story was a little shapeless. The nightmare sequence was a direct Phantasm homage, always appreciated. N64 is not 80s retro and that gave me a minor spergout. Overall, did not disappoint.

I see the director did The Void. I did not care for The Void, although in fairness I didn't even finish it.

Ever wanted to hear an obscure alternate take on the theme from Dawn of the Dead?

Part of the score for a really awful Eyetalian Exorcist ripoff. Possibly the worst one of this era. But the soundtrack is pretty good. It was composed by genre regular Stelvio Cipriani and performed by Goblin so it has that sound. A lot of off cuts from this soundtrack were reused for Pieces as well.

Sounds like a track from CAM library music album #182 - it also has a track by Frizzi that sounds a bit like a Zombi2 outtake or demo.

Amusing thing about watching movies on Tubi is you’ll be in the middle of some horror movie, or some total piece of trash exploitation and it’ll be broken up by a bubbly commerical about a brand of detergent or toothpaste or something featuring a smiling interracial couple.

I never got around to Old Dark House before because it's always tagged "comedy", which isn't exactly wrong, but it's not goofy or farcical and plays the darker parts straight. I really enjoyed it.

I hate to give too much away about Good Boy, but I'll briefly summarize the first half or so:

Our female hero goes out on a Tinder date with Chad, is smitten, goes home with him... only to discover the next morning that Frank the Fursuit Dog is living with him. Note that Frank is full nonverbal dog-LARP-mode all the time, not a gay furry fuckslave. She nopes out and heads home with the intention of never seeing him again.

Afterwards, she shows her friend pictures of Chad, who recognizes him as a famous millionaire heir, and assures her that this guy is so far out of her league that she's crazy not to stick with him. After watching some internet videos explaining the concept of puppy play and how not-insane it is, she decides to give Chad another chance.

Shortly thereafter, Chad has a fun idea: why not have a little weekend getaway in an isolated cabin in the woods? And also they kick their smart phone addictions for the weekend? That is, she gives him her phone and he hides it so she has no way of contacting the outside world.

From that point on, it kind of writes itself.

Dark movie despite having very little explicit content, not very long (~80 minutes I think), decidedly un-woke. Enthusiastic 👍 from me.
I had to see Good Boy after reading this summary, and it was a pretty enjoyable watch, good acting, with a surprising twist halfway through and quite a finale/conclusion. The second half really has a lot of sense of dread though the end went a bit over the top. For what seems like a very low budget movie my only technical grievance is the cinematography is a bit crap. Sure the backstory could be fleshed out more but that's not really necessary, you can tell what these people were trying to accomplish.

Another movie I saw lately is Dumplings, Hong Kong 2004, it's on Tubi. A drama with themes on aging, infidelity, and the dichotomy of the sexes all based around a plot of eating aborted babies. It was interesting

Dumplings is the feature version of the short of the same name that was featured in the anthology horror Three... Extremes. To make it more confusing, Three... Extremes is the sequel to Three but when it was released over here on DVD the order of the movies was reversed.

I prefer the short film version but both versions are good. The short film has an entirely different ending. The other two shorts on Three... Extremes come highly recommended.

Is the stand-alone Dumplings worth a watch if I have already Three Extremes?

Yeesh, Exorcism was just flat out boring. Think the only scare anyone had in the showing was when those dogs were fighting at the start. No inventive kills or squirmy gore, just a weird emphasis on vaginal exams and magical negros having the best faith.

Actually heard someone go "oh FUCK OFF" during that patriarchy line, which cracked me up.

ok the /pol/ rejects are shitting up the thread, but if you dug Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill House, the new flanagan Fall of the House of Usher is really fucking good (caveat: yet to see the family). It's pretty fucking unique, very poe, and very entertaining imo.

Gory as fuck too.

I'd say it is.

True story: after watching it I had an insatiable hunger for dumplings and immediately drove to a Chinese restaurant.
The sounds when she ate, like masticating a baby bird. Appalling.

My buddies keep recommending House ofUsher, but there’s three gay couples and a troon. Seems the troon dies horrifically, but I can’t bring myself to look at it,

Having read the book by Norman Patridge, I was interested in the film of the book "Dark Harvest" - the atmosphere, gore, and gnarled pumpkin-man are great, the movie is "The Purge" but with an accursed ritual in a small town, where the town's able-bodied young men participate in hope of "winning" the prize of being allowed to leave. Even having read the original, filmwise the way the premise was presented was intriguing and David Slade’s direction is pretty solid, but the narrative, the plot and characters are too messy, too thin and all too abrupt.

It could have, should have gelled together better, but it's still a decent romp.

They all die horrifically. Pretty much every episode goes like this:
"Woo! Look at how much of a perverted scumbag I am!"
"Oh look, it's the consequences of my own actions!"

Wait, that movie is out already? I know MGM delayed it from a September 2022 release, but I didn't know it's already released.

If any one is interested in Poe stories there's Extraordinary Tales. It's a bunch of animated short of Poe's poems and short stories, read by Christopher Lee, Roger Corman and even an old old reading they tried to clean up of Bela Lugosi.

And Julian Sands. Whose corpse turned up back in June, so he's been upgraded from "almost certainly dead" to "officially dead". He had gone missing back in January while hiking on Mount Baldy.

"'Mount baldy'? Don't mind if I do!"
