Finally getting around to watching Hardware (1990) tonight. Heard a lot of good things about the director, I hope he makes it big in Hollywood some day!

https://youtube.com/watch?v=jnVVyfyFChE
Richard Stanley got a Hollywood break with The Island of Dr. Moreau but that movie was such a mess it got its own doc about it (really good doc, well worth a watch called Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau). Then in 2019 he finally got another movie made with Color Out of Space, which was reviewed very well and did well enough to have another movie set up, However, in 2021 those plans were killed when his long-term partner alleged abuse, in response he filed a lawsuit in 2021 but not much since and in 2023 two more people came forward alleging the same thing.

Finally sat down to rewatch the original saw films and im Sorry I kind of lost interest past maybe Saw IV, they are perfectly solid in terms of premise, levels of violence and genuinely do manage to be scary in a more disgusting way then anything. But I do not get the big hype around them. They’re just too shallow, middle of the roadly acted (Tobin Bell Is thé exception of course) and lacking a real sense of thrill or depth to be the kind of Se7en style David fincher level horror mystery films they are trying to be.

Regardless I’m checking out Saw X come next Monday since I heard the new director and team gave it their all and actually balanced out the elaborate and vicious gory traps with good character drama which most of the previous films were sorely missing.

Also sorely missing: Parsnips.

The first Saw was fine but I find it to be too clean and Hollywood for my tastes. I feel that way with all of James Wans stuff. It's like he tries too hard to make this silly idea be deep and smart when really they don't know what's going on and are just milking it for money. Malignant is like he took the idea of Basket Case and tried to make it serious. He's all flash and no substance to me.

I was browsing through the movie roster of the horror movie marathon in my local Kinoplex and one movie cought my eye, i combed the farms to see, if anyone has already spoke about it, since its world premiere was in October 2022, but found nothing, so i guess it slipped through.

also known as Meg, deg & Frank, a Norwegian horror movie (although this looks more like a psychological thriller to me), about a rich, good-looking dude, who really love dogs and keeps one in his house - the titular Frank. Thing is, Frank is not a sweet, wholesome little pupperino, but a 40 dude in full fursuit, roleplaying as one.

The description itself intrigued me, because this sound like some primo, fucked-up psycho-trip, or, failing that, at least it has a potential to be an unintentional comedy....or a complete cringe fest.

Sadly, this is the last movie in the que and i'm not down for sitting in the cinema chair for like 5 hours straight, even with breakes, and the ticket also ain't cheap, so i guess i'm just gonna "watch it elsewhere".

Has anyone seen this movie? Is it worth the time?

Yeah Saw was trying way too hard to be like a David fincher movie but simply lacked the intrigue and quality of acting, dialogue to really pull it off. The premise was on the same level but just lacked polish.

I heard of this movie and I was waiting for the puppy players to get mad because it makes them look creepy. Not that they need help with that.

Saw is exploitation schlock without the fun. I don't see anything deep about it's premise. The only reason people watch it is to see people die but they don't want to admit that they're watching a polished up exploitation movie that would have been a hit a drive in.

This is going to come off as one-upmanship but I recommend the 89 movie Baxter:

It's a favorite of John Waters and is a really interesting take on the killer dog movie: the movie is entirely from the dog's perspective and we see the dog deal with neglect and abuse and eventually become a serial killer. Although, there's almost no gore it's a thinking man's killer dog movie no matter how absurd that sounds. If subtitled movies don't bother you (and they shouldn't) then I'd recommend it.

Edit: I read your post too quickly and thought you were referencing killer dog movies. Yeah, I saw the trailer for Good Boy and it looks interesting.

Nigga they're exploitation films through and through. They aren't trying to be anything more than that.

Yeah but like don’t maybe pretend like your something High art? Even the director himself said he was making an arty high concept horror like Se7en. Yet the Saw films Just kept getting lazier and more Schlocky with each new reiteration of the series. It’s weird I dunno.

Maybe he's a dumbass that likes the smell of his own farts. It's not weird, Wan is that director studios got to when they want shit made by a director that will do what they say. That's why they got him to start making capeshit.

Yeah 1, and 3 are great, and that's pretty where the series peaks. Then it's a long list of mediocre films with a few exceptions inbetween. And yes the last one was good, they broke the curse of mediocrity, finally.

Lars and the Real Dog

Ok, chiming in with my V/H/S 85 comments, and: I thought it was mid, good for a VHS movie, and then the end credits kicked in and I'm changing my review to GREAT! The wraparound is pretty good (I mean it's in like 30 second to 1 minute bits until the last segment, so whatever); the 'punchline' could've been a hell of a lot better, but I guess it at least made an effort. It did have a couple of good one-liners in it ([Fuck it, let him go. cracked me up when it happened). The Mexican one is also fine-ish. I'm not a V/H/S connoisseur by any means, but I swear this exact segment has been done before? Or something so similar that it borders on plagiarism. It's fine, it's well-done ish, with a lot of camera swapping for purpose, just all in all pretty tired.

TKNOGD - holy cringefest. Like I get that it was supposed to be a bit cringey, and even still I couldn't sit through it. You've got the unlikeable negress spouting Nietzsche takes for far too long, and far too annoyingly. I understand she's a performance artist from the 80s, so being annoying is a requirement, but god damn. The segment DID have two redeeming features, though (don't read if you're going to watch it, you'll miss out on a sensible chuckle and a 'I saw it coming but it's still funny' laugh): The guy and his "eye-phones," and the audience still thinking it was the show.

No Wake/Ambrosia and Dreamkill both deserve their own damn movies. They're extremely good stories, and very well done (not just for V/H/S). Ok, fair enough, Dreamkill is a bit gothicy and over-wrought, but the 1985 setting makes that seem much less obnoxious. There are a couple discrepancies (who the fuck is filming in the police station besides the static cameras?) and someone should let the director know that sprocket marks and cigarette burns don't show up on videotapes.

No Wake/Ambrosia i have literally no criticism for, except they should be longer. Caught me off guard, and I won't spoil it even with hints, because it's freaking fun.

So like 1 shit segment, two very mid ones, and three really good ones. Plus the end credits which sealed the deal for me make this a 3.5/5. Probably my favorite V/H/S, if not the actual 'best' one. If you liked the first two, check this one out, they seem to be back on form (which, granted isn't magnificent cinema, but IS a fun way to kill 90 minutes).

I'm not too sure whether or not your post is bait or if you are trolling

Baxter was based on a cult 1977 novel by one Ken Greenhall, Hell Hound, published in 1977 by Zebra Books, which looks like another cheesy anonymous horror novel put out by Zebra but it's a real shocker. Greenhall really gets into the mind of his narrator, the sociopathic bull terrier Baxter. Not that dogs are actually capable of sociopathy, but hey. Roll with it.

As the novel starts off, Baxter is feeling stuck with his owner, the uninteresting, joyless, uptight widower Mrs. Prescott and longs to join the vibrant younger couple across the street, who seem more interesting to him.

What are the possibilities of my strength? That is a thought I have never had before. What if some morning as the old woman stood at the head of the staircase, she were suddenly to feel a weight thrusting at the back of her legs?

He's a pip, this Baxter.

Pity is not something I want to encourage in myself. It is something for humans to feel, one of the jumble of odd sentiments they burden themselves with. Their emotions are like diseases, I think; diseases that can spread among those who try to understand them. Let their feelings be a mystery, like the dozens of other strange traits they have.

So he ends up getting his wish, and in his new home he feels like he's in control, in a position of strength. This is how it's meant to be, this is the life he was meant to live.

My pleasure increases endlessly… She has learned to feed me fresh, raw meat. She brings me large, mysterious bones, which I crack fiercely, feeling pride and pleasure in the strength of my teeth and jaws.

All is well until the young wife starts undergoing some changes.

Her body is becoming thicker and thicker, and there is an added scent about her that I find unpleasant. It is almost as if she had the scent of two people.

So Baxter has a competitor for his owners' affection and attention soon, and the resulting newborn offends him with it's weakness, it's stupidity and dependence on it's parents, and their doting on it. Let's just say, after a while Baxter ends up with new owners, a family including a 13 year old kid named Carl who is obsessed with Hitler and Eva Braun and their time in the Bunker and this is a new relationship dynamic Baxter ends up in, enjoying even, until once more things start going wrong. It's a very dark and chilly piece of fiction, and if you are into the work of authors like Patricia Highsmith, or Shirley Jackson or JG Ballard or others who don't come to mind right away you might find it up your alley.

Browsing through Tubi, I watched two 80s slashers that both developed a cult following in later years: Curtains and Graduation Day. I found Graduation Day utilized the mystery of who was the killer better along with the overall story. However, when a full reveal of the masked killer is shown at the halfway point, it eliminates a possible suspect when you look at the body type. Curtains had production issues that resulted in it being completed two years later. One of my main issues was that the lighting was so dark and it made seeing what was happening in night very difficult. Another was learning who the killer was. Basically it was a character you least expected and I think the issues behind-the-scenes may have been a factor. Probably the only memorable thing about Curtains is the poster.
