More like SkinamarSTINK, right.
Anyways, the past few years have seen a wave of derivative, formalist horror movies and A24-style trash being propped up as "elevated horror", a label which comes off as born of insecure genre fans wanting horror to be "taken seriously". It also feels like the horror version of people saying "this mecha anime is different, you see, because it's not about the mechs...it's about the characters."
Skinamarink comes off like a cool film school short that shouldn't have been stretched out to feature length (because it is), and you can watch 99% of Skinamarink for free at home tonight by fretting about something in bed for a while. I had been intrigued by the original short and was interested in the feature length film, but the execution was off.
