More like SkinamarSTINK, right.

Anyways, the past few years have seen a wave of derivative, formalist horror movies and A24-style trash being propped up as "elevated horror", a label which comes off as born of insecure genre fans wanting horror to be "taken seriously". It also feels like the horror version of people saying "this mecha anime is different, you see, because it's not about the mechs...it's about the characters."

Skinamarink comes off like a cool film school short that shouldn't have been stretched out to feature length (because it is), and you can watch 99% of Skinamarink for free at home tonight by fretting about something in bed for a while. I had been intrigued by the original short and was interested in the feature length film, but the execution was off.

I've been keeping an eye on this one ever since I saw the trailer before Terrifier 2.
So I went to see The Outwaters last night, and it's weird. It starts off kind of slow with way too many scenes about these four people preparing to go shoot a music video in the desert. Then it gets progressively weirder, and about halfway through it turns into Event Horizon. Nothing makes a hell of a lot of sense, but it is pretty gory. The scenes where the lighting consists only of a flashlight are annoying. It's better than Skinamarink in the sense that things are actually happening and you're not just listening to people whisper while cartoons play in the background. I'm not sorry I watched it, but it's a not a particularly coherent movie.

I did like that they didn't feel the need to provide a ton of exposition, which is something that really irritates me about found-footage movies in general where the characters talk about what they're doing that's being filmed as if they need to be reminded constantly, as if people making home movies are constantly narrating them.

:stares directly into the camera: "Here we are, going on our trip to the desert to go on a hike and shoot a music video!"

Outwaters takes a while to get where it's going but I didn't mind, and it is unpredictable, and disturbing, and disgusting and it got me in ways a horror film, and a film in general hasn't in a while.

I feel like I wanna watch Snow Falls on tubi. But I also want to find any other Z-grade horror movie on that platform that's worth checking out.

Yes, plenty of hidden gems but after awhile I got bored skimming the horror section, for every interesting movie you find there's a dozen horror Grade Z flicks from recent years with amateurish acting and CGI effects that would have been considered bargain basement in 2002.

Overall, the selection of b-movies on Tubi is insane. There's stuff on there that had all but vanished from circulation since the days of video rental stores and in some cases they have high quality prints of film never even on DVD. I've come across movies I had forgotten even existed.

Just a few Bs from mostly the 90s I've come across

Within the Rock (Xander Berkley and space miners vs a hibernating alien)

The Terror Within

The Terror Within II

Project Metalbeast (lets test the invulnerable synthetic skin on the werewolf, always a good idea)

DNA (Jurgen Prochnow monkeys around with alien bones and Mark Dascascos has to deal with the revived freak that results)

Sci-Fighters (psycho ex-cop Billy Drago escapes from a lunar penal facility infected with an alien virus and only his ex-parter Roddy Piper can stop him)

I talked to the director of Within the Rock. Dude was still pissed over that because the production was taken away from him in editing and it was transformed into a 50's B movie homage.

I'll always remember Project: Metalbeast from Monstervision:

The flick has some decent ideas. Plus Kane Hodder plays the werewolf in the handful of scenes with the werewolf.

What have I been watching:

Slumber Party Massacre 3. A competently made slasher made during the final death throes of the 80's and they don't let you forget that it was technically shot in the 80's. A better film than part 2 (Note: I despise musicals) and a fun easy watch.

Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge. This is a re-watch because I haven't seen this since I caught it on network TV when I was about 10 or 11. I hated it then. But then it was recently featured on Joe Bob Briggs' The Last Drive-In and... It's okay. Seeing the gore and some tits in the movie did elevate it somewhat for me. It's still a very average picture relying on the kitsch value of making a Phantom of the Opera story in the 80's and set in a mall. If you want a good 80's slasher take on Phantom of the Opera then I'd recommend the one from 89 starring Robert Englund. It's... Fine. Disposable slasher trash but done competently enough.

I've been meaning to check that out, really.

Who would you guys say is the best horror protagonist? My vote goes to MacReady from the Thing (1982). In most horror stories the protagonist must learn that playing by the rules of the monster/situation means death, Dutch from Predator has to reverse the roles of prey and hunter and Ripley from Alien learns that trying to fight the Xenomorph is pointless, just blow the ship up, etc.
I thought about this a while and it's a hard question. I think if most people had to give an answer they'd pick one of the more effectual and assertive ones, like MacReady or Ripley. I like Suspiria and I like Jessica Harper as the lead, but she's reactive and not very complex. But it's not like having her kick down the door and gun down all of the witches would have improved the movie... probably.

I rewatched Frankenhooker recently and one of the reasons that it lags behind other Henenlotter's other movies like Brain Damage and Basket Case is that the protagonist isn't as interesting. The protags in BD and BC aren't cool or badass or anything, in fact they're both pretty much total fuckups, but they're good characters in the sense of investing the audience in their plight and experiencing some kind of change. The Frankenhooker guy doesn't have a whole lot to do for most of the movie and barely even interacts with anyone else. Yes there are exploding prostitutes, but I need a story that makes me care about the exploding prostitutes.

Also, horror movies mostly exist to fulfill man's normal desire to see women murdered. Therefore a disproportionate number of horror protagonists are women, and women are never good characters. They also speak to our primal fear of being retarded, so most of the protagonists are retards.

Pauly Shore is in it... AVOID

It's also VERY BORING.

I remember being a part of a horror message board and a Jewish kid joined and thought he was the horror expert and everything. He posted a selfie where he looked like Bobby Hill. Annoying but somewhat tolerable. And I remember he bragged about using his Bar Mitzvah money to buy Jesus Christ Serial Rapist and the day he got the movie he complained at how bad it was. Everyone on the forum, including myself, laughed at him for being a dumbass.

True story.

It's been almost 24 hours since my last post...

I revisited Ebola Syndrome again. Incredibly fun OTT "They will never make something like this ever the fuck again" kind of movie. It is a very unique specimen: it is both a remake, a spiritual sequel, and a parody of the original. Name me one other movie that is all three of those things.

I'm waiting. Fuckers.

It is a pseudo remake of the director and star's previous film The Untold Story AKA Bunman. It can also be seen as a sequel ala Evil Dead 2. And it's a parody of the first film. I guess Evil Dead 2 is the only other movie like this now that I think about it. Although, Evil Dead 2 fails to have a scene where a guy jerks off into a piece of pork and serves it to a customer. Or, feature a serial killer infected with Ebola going on a killing spree.

I have the 4K and I just love the fact that this trash epic is the first CAT III film to be released on 4K and one of a handful of Hong Kong films released on 4K. Best part? Vinegar Syndrome reincorporated the uncut footage and restored it. The old Discotek DVD had the uncut footage but only as part of the extras and they weren't legally allowed to add them back into the movie but thank god for fan-edits.

Legendary trash film that -dare I say- is up there with the original Maniac. Watch the Vinegar Syndrome version or don't bother because the cut gore is very significant.

Okay, THREE MOVIES, can you faggots think of four? I don't think so.
