I've been starting to prep for the Halloween season by gathering up movies to watch, and I wanted to ask here if anyone had recommendations for good Japanese horror, particularly ones of the more gothic or slasher variety that really fit the season. I already have the various Go Nagai live action works (Welcome to the Vampire Onsen, Scary Zone, etc.), Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell, Evil Dead Trap 1-2, and the Bloodthirsty Trilogy on my list, but am looking for more.

I watched those Bloodthirsty movies myself pretty recently and would have to rate them "quite nifty". I think the first one is the oldest instance of spooky sped-up video I have seen in a movie. They seem well-suited for Halloween, since they have some connection to western folklore. I would guess they might not have Halloween in Japan? I don't know if movies about those cyclops umbrellas that lick people are properly seasonal, so I won't randomly list whatever J-horror I can think of. House is a really good movie too, like a Japanese Evil Dead 2, sort of, and fits Halloween pretty well.

Here's an unreleased SOV action horror movie getting a blu-ray release. Reminds me of Bad Taste mixed with some Evil Dead
They're putting out alot of great SOV stuff

Check out Guzo, Biotherapy, Organ, and Gakidama

I wouldn't say The Purge was mediocre, I think it was fantastic concept, and half of it is also a great movie, it's just the other half that drags it down. Overall, I still think it was pretty good alright.

I think most of the Purge movies suck. The 2nd one, The Purge: Anarchy, is the only good one.
I honestly think The Purge would've worked better as more of a medieval fantasy adventure than a post-apocalyptic horror movie. It's like how I felt with Final Destination, a movie that should feel more like a fantasy movie than an actual horror movie.

I've never seen any of the Purge movies because they all looked relentlessly stupid. Should I maintain that train of thought?
If you want, start with Anarchy and then Election Year.

Never cared for the Purge, especially since the original Death Race does exist. Yeah, it’s a horror movie at the end of the day so common sense and reality doesn’t need to be applied but the whole concept is pretty dumb on it’s own.

Death Race isn’t a masterpiece either but it sure is memorable unlike the Purge movies. The poster is badass as well.

I fucking love Death Race. I'd say something like 28 Days Later is a better movie than The Purge or most of its sequels.

Wasn't 28 Days the first major motion picture filmed with a hand cam?

Let's see: Naked Blood, the All Night Long trilogy (there's 3 other movies and 2 of them recently got fansubs), can't go wrong with Takashi Miike flicks like Audition, not necessarily horror but close enough Ichi: the Killer, Jigoku (1960) is a classic, Onibaba, Organ, Tetsuo: the Iron Man, Suicide Club, Meatball Machine, Tokyo Gore Police, Blind Beast, Blood: the Last Vampire (anime, skip the live action).

Gotchu buddy.

All Night Long (1992, the SOV sequels are pretty cool too but more of an acquired taste for sure)
Biotherapy (1986)
Blind Woman's Curse (1970)
Cyclops (1987)
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968)
Gozu (2003, Takashi Miike's best imo)
Jigoku (1960 - first hour is kinda slow but stick with it and you will be rewarded)
Nuns That Bite (1977 - ultra obscure pinku eiga with supernatural elements and some nasty gore, AKA "Torn Priestess")
Shogun's Sadism (1976 - the Japanese equivalent of Bloodsucking Freaks)
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989 - all of Tsukamoto's stuff is good imo...highly recommend Tokyo Fist and A Snake of June too)

Btw, if you like Go Nagai's stuff (assuming you've seen the Devilman & Violence Jack OVAs), check out Digital Devil Story, the 1987 OVA.
