Caught V/H/S 94. It's thankfully better than Viral, but still nowhere close to the first two. The sewer sequence is probably the most solid of the segments.

The framing narrative was really weak and could have been better. (Like tie it into that parallel Statanic world or the doomsday cult that birthed the demon, etc.)

I'm kinda hoping they do another. Yeah Viral was a disaster, but the concept of horror vignettes with actual decent small-ish budgets can produce some fun content.

My personal idea for a clip would be someone on a hike at night bitten by a werewolf, escaping, then slowly transforming into a werewolf as they attempt to flee back to help. Slowly losing themselves to the transformation. Ended with them fully transformed and attacking a group.

The new (completely unnecessary) Scream movie has a release date of January 14th 2022.
You know what that meaaaaans

Amazon and Blumhouse teamed up for Welcome to the Blumhouse, where they put out 4 no-budget movies for Halloween.

Bingo Hell:
This one has a pretty good cast, Adriana Barraza (Babel) is the lead, and Richard Brake is the villain, both are very strong with what they are given.

The basic plot is a neighbourhood that is middle of getting bought out for gentrification. They wake up one day to see their local Bingo Hall taken over and given a makeover with now bigger cash prices. The lead of the movie knows something isn't right while, while everyone else gets suckered in by the cash prices and they want to escape from the reality.

From there goes how you expect, those that win start dying, the lead saves the day but learns the lesson that a neighbourhood isn't where a place you live but the people who live with and they burn the bingo hall down.

Over, the movie was awful. The best way to describe it would be a Full Mon movie that came out anywhere between the mid-2000s and now, just with more locations and a better overall cast. The deaths feel like a joke, it's clear they are trying to go for Nightmare of Elm Street style deaths but they had no ideas apart from must have lots of green slime.

While the script isn't groundbreaking, with better editing and direction could have been a fine movie. Overall have to say it's the worst made of the four but not the worst movie.
2/10

Black As Night:
This is the worst of the butch. the plot from imdb "A teenage girl with self-esteem issues finds confidence in the most unlikely way, by spending her summer battling vampires that prey on New Orleans' disenfranchised with the help of her best friend, the boy she's always pined for, and a peculiar rich girl."

The movie is very racist, a lot of fuck white people, white people are scary from the stereotypical gay Mexican character, but also lots of jokes about how dark-skinned the lead is, and the movie outright says her melanin makes her a super vampire. It comes across as someone trying to do ironic racist comedy but all they know about comedy is one random youtube video they found.

None of the characters stands out at all, outside Keith David who is the main villain but you really don't see him much in the movie. His backstory is of an ex-slave turned into a vampire and is fed up with seeing how black people have been treated, wants to start an uprising.

The movie is very ugly, in order to see anything I had to turn up my brightness and contrast to the max, this is a first for me. The movie is full of pointless shit most of which go nowhere and is dropped, such as the two good African vampires or the one white character who at one point just says pretty much "I'm done, going off to study, good luck killing vampires".
2/10

Madres:
Of the three so far, this is the best-made one, the production side of the movie it's everything you would expect at a minimum. With that said, it's not good by any means but it's not incompetent such as Bingo Hell and Black As Night were.

"Expecting their first child, a Mexican-American couple move to a migrant farming community in 1970's California where strange symptoms and terrifying visions threaten their new family."

The movie is really about why all these Mexican women are losing babies, is it a curse, pesticides or something else. Spoiler, it's something else, which is a racist Doctor getting Mexican women who don't speak English to sign sterilization letters and the guy running the farm was also in on it using pesticides to cause rashes and sending them up at that racist doctor.

Could have maybe worked as a 40-minute episode of an anthology horror show drawn out at 90 minutes. The movie ends by saying it's based on a true story but gives very little of the details. Looking up pretty sure they mean the Madrigal v. Quilligan lawsuit, but the only question I ended up having is why didn't they just make a movie of that instead.

3/10

The Manor:
And this was, alright. Nothing stand out, but not badly done by any means. "After suffering a mild stroke, Judith Albright reluctantly moves into a historic nursing home where she becomes convinced a supernatural force is killing the residents."

Lead was played by Barbara Hershey, who I was shocked to find out is older than the 70-year-old she is playing this movie. The movie also overall good cast, the only weak link is the guy playing the grandson, who the character is also the weak part of the movie and he comes across he wrote to be much younger than he is in parts of the movie.

You can see where it is going, and never breaks new ground but at the same time, it never does anything wrong. Is a couple of story points they could have done more time with such as one guy trying to get with Barbara Hershey. The grandson character needed a total rewrite because, in this movie, his relationship with his grandmother is downright creepy at points.
5/10

Overall, feels like a dumping ground for movies Blumhouse can't anyone to put in cinemas. The only one that isn't bad The Manor, still doesn't feel like it would have much of a market.

You would be surprised by how much merchandise the Puppet Master series has.
Puppet Master movies are basically toy commercials, like the horror equivalent of Transformers. The puppets are almost always cooler than the movies they're in. It's a shame how washed-up the series is, especially after Littlest Reich turned out well and gave us some hope. Maybe I'm overestimating how popular/recognizable the brand is but it seems like they could still have a profitable franchise if they'd stop making movies that are COMPLETELY terrible. I want to like them but it's just not possible.

Ah, sounds like the Buffy reboot finally made it out of development hell.

Eh, the Puppet Master movies became that. The toys became a thing in 99 when the manchild adult toy/collector boom happened largely thanks to Todd McFarlane. At that point I think Band was trying to make franchises to sell toys especially with Retro Puppet Master (it's also the worst movie in the series) and also Blood Dolls. But when the toys first happened I think Band realized "Hey, I can make toys of all these properties I own!" Which lead to this:

Notice the dead cat accessory.

I remember there were going to be toys based on Blood Dolls. Shout outs to anyone who remembers Blood Dolls but the toys never got released because I think Band lost his ass on the venture.

Edit: there were Blood Dolls toys but only one of them (the pimp) got out there.

Got to disagree Puppet Master: The Legacy is the worst one, can't get worse than a clip show movie

At least the clips were fun and it was the final appearance of Guy Rolfe. Yeah, it was a ripoff movie but Retro Puppet Master offends me more for being PG-13 and a blatant advertisement for the Retro Puppet Master toys.

Not counting "archive footage", Guy Rolfe's last appearance was in Retro. I'd put Retro over Legacy and Curse if only for that, although that's not a hill I want to die on.

Legacy killed off the protagonist of 4-5 offscreen, made Toulon a bad guy that the puppets hated, and narrated the clips out-of-order and wrong. I know, the fault lies with me for having even 1% investment in the story or continuity of Puppet Master, but it's lousy even for what it is.

Latest horror anything I saw was Malignant. Hard to trash it wtihout spoiling the twist, but it's all over the place and not scary at all. James Wan should go back to making awful, profitable jump scare trash for zoomies and wine aunts. 3/10 but the 2 points are there for accidental comedy and 1 for having the spooky killer look like the edgelord from Hatred.

Watched Evil Dead 2 tonight. Spectacular movie, the old school special effects and claymation work are great. This is only my 3rd time watching it all the way through, and I'm just now realizing the influence that the Evil Dead had on Splatterhouse.

Speaking of, it might be time to dig out one of my Namco Collections and play Splatterhouse again. Tis the season, afterall.

I'm curious, what are some polarizing as fuck horror movies that you either loved or hated
Going back through this thread and overlooked this.

Nightmare on Elm Street 5: the Dream Child. This one gets shit on too much. It's very creative, Freddy has some great lines, and it has 3 of the most inventive/grotesque deaths of the entire franchise.

For some reason the uncut version has never been released on DVD/Blu or streaming. Which is insane. That's just money left on the table by the studio.

I think people dismissed it because they thought the body count was too low and they were judging it on the cut R version.

That's my one franchise movie that isn't Alien 3. Then there's Fulci's Black Cat.

Critics really shit on this one even star David Warbeck and he was in far worse movies than this. I think it's an overall good Fulci effort that's more of an homage to the Universal golden age infused with Fulci style gore.

Hot take: An Eyetalian Last House on the Left ripoff is better than the movie it's ripping off.

Last House on the Left is very poorly made. It's saved by the 2nd act, the performances of David Hess and Fred Lincoln, and choice moments of brutality and (rarely fitting) music.

Oh and Day of the Dead is the best of the Dead Trilogy.

I've largely been avoiding the big franchises for my 31 Nights thing, but when I really think about it, I think New Nightmare is probably my favorite when it comes to "serious" horror. I mean, I'll always love Dream Warriors for the 80s cheese, the jokes, Dokken, etc... But New Nightmare was the last time Freddy was actually kind of scary since the first one.

Finally watched that Child's Play remake last night.

It wasn't too bad, but the original is better.

Man, Andy's mom is a real downgrade. In this one she doesn't really do anything, and she's kinda unlikable. Like, she doesn't seem to care all that much that her boyfriend treats her son like shit, or her for that matter.

Not trying to be a contrarian fag but I'll have to disagree on this one. The original movie is fine. It's a well made killer doll movie but the problem is that the sequels exist and when you look at the poster you know it's Chucky who is responsible. It's like Friday the 13th part 1 in that sense. So we're spending all this time on setting up if the kid is crazy or not when we know it's Chucky. The poster fucking gives it away.

So the remake cuts to the chase and makes up for the lack of Brad Dourif with great gory set pieces ("This is for Tupac!") and I like Mark Hamil's Teddy Ruxpin-inspired take on the character.

And BTW, my favorite of the Chucky movies is Child's Play 2 and Bride of Chucky.

You and I both went on tangents about this on movie night voice chat.

I'll clarify my take on the film
I like the gritty low budget look of the film. Agreed Hess is great, I thought Sandra Peabody wasnt bad.
But the tonal shifts between the rape revenge movie that's going on being contrasted with Smokey and the Bandit 5 absolutely ruined the film for me to the pont where I'd rather just watch the remake with Aaron Paul and that chick from Garfunkel and Oats.

That's why I recommend Night Train Murders. It's the same story (well, we could bring The Virgin Spring into this and that would automatically trump every Last House on the Left ripoff) but done with far better technical skill and presents some twists that greatly cloud the morality of the villains. Even House on the Edge of the Park is better even though it's not really a ripoff aside from the casting of David Hess and it has a similar title.
