That's why I recommend Night Train Murders. It's the same story (well, we could bring The Virgin Spring into this and that would automatically trump every Last House on the Left ripoff) but done with far better technical skill and presents some twists that greatly cloud the morality of the villains. Even House on the Edge of the Park is better even though it's not really a ripoff aside from the casting of David Hess and it has a similar title.
We can all agree though, its (the original last house) better than Chaos from 2005?

Watched the The Mouth of Madness couple of days ago. Recommend it, sometimes it gets a bit to on the nose meta but other times it does some really cool shit.

The best scene is the drive scene towards Hobb's End. There's no monsters, there's no obvious danger, there's little tension, and it's still disturbing and scary as all hell.

Not trying to be a contrarian fag but I'll have to disagree on this one. The original movie is fine. It's a well made killer doll movie but the problem is that the sequels exist and when you look at the poster you know it's Chucky who is responsible. It's like Friday the 13th part 1 in that sense. So we're spending all this time on setting up if the kid is crazy or not when we know it's Chucky. The poster fucking gives it away.
The very first scene in Child's Play is Brad Dourif dying and casting a voodoo spell on a Good Guy doll. He even swears revenge against his partner and Chris Sarandon "if it's the last thing I do" or whatever. Any sober adult should have the plot worked out before the opening credits finish. The only reason we don't see Chucky walking around and talking in Dourif's voice from the beginning is Hollywood 101 suspense-building technique. By about ~20 minutes into the movie we even see the doll move by itself. It would take an M. Night Shyamalan-tier twist for Andy to be the killer.

Man, Andy's mom is a real downgrade. In this one she doesn't really do anything, and she's kinda unlikable. Like, she doesn't seem to care all that much that her boyfriend treats her son like shit, or her for that matter.
Yeah, Andy's mom in the original backs Andy 100%. In the remake everybody still suspects Andy long after it makes no sense and the plot ought to have moved on. She was one of the more sympathetic horror movie parents. In Freddy movies they're all like "it's probably a coincidence that all your friends got dismembered in their sleep, have some sleeping pills and we'll take you to the shrink tomorrow".

I think Chucky the series starts today.

By the way, what was that re-recorded version of 'Road Leads to Nowhere' recorded for?

Sunday's movie: The Canal (2014) man finds a spooky video from a 100 years ago that shows a murder happening at his house, and he starts to unravel. Is his wife cheating on him? Is his nanny weirdly ugly, or just Irish? Why doesn't he fuck the blonde girl at work? Are my balls itching? How long am I gonna bother with that shit? 1/5

Yesterday was Contracted, I'll write about it as I write about tonight's movie: Contracted Phase II

Been meaning to watch The Canal.

I hated Contracted.

A much better movie along the same theme is Afflicted (2014). Highly recommended.

So just watch the first episode of the Chucky TV series and I have mix feelings. I will continue to watch the series and see how it continues to go.
It's soooooooo slowwwwwwww. Taking forever to do anything, I don't like the kid at all, and the puppet effects are pretty poor. Yeah, it's a TV show but the puppet effects are worse than the last two direct to video movies. Only one kill as well.

Meh/10.

Skipping.

Watched Pet Semetary last night and forgot how good it was. I never saw the remake but I've heard awful things about it. Can anyone confirm?
It was okay. Best thing about it is the ending. Nothing really happens until the final 30-40 minutes and it "subverts expectations."

So recently I rewatched every Friday the 13th film, which isn't that straightforward as I've ended up with a mix of UK, US and German blu rays (yes there is a complete box set, but it's rare and expensive). This must be the only long-running franchise where I can get at least some enjoyment out of every entry, whereas I wouldn't watch the later Hellraiser or Howling films if you paid me. So I think I am now legally obliged to rank them:

11: Jason Goes to Hell - a great opening scene, but beyond that this is utterly lame. Yes they tried to do something different, but you don't make a Jason film where Jason is barely in it. This is the only film where it actively felt like work to get through
10: Jason Takes Manhattan - I don't hate the boat part as much as a lot of people, even if his ridiculous teleporting kills any sense of tension. I do like the running joke of no one in New York paying any attention and that chase is fun, but the ending in the tunnel is awful and overall it's far too slow
9: Part 3 - woah dude, 3D! It's like you're really there! Except what that really means is out of focus characters pointing things at the screen. Other than a few creepy shots at the end, and him obtaining the mask and machete, completely forgettable.
8: 2009 remake - once all the utterly insufferable supporting characters has been killed off this actually becomes a pretty decent film. It's just that for me the gritty realistic tone doesn't suit it as well, missing the charm of the originals. I do like how much more mobile Jason is here, but he also now feels more sadistic than just incredibly pissed off, and taking captives feels completely out of character.
7: Part 1 - usually, the original is by far the best. Problem is, aside from some good kills there's an awful lot of nothing happening. Whilst Pamela is very memorable, people seem to forget she just appears out of nowhere for the final act, which isn't a good idea in a murder mystery film.
6: The New Blood - whilst in many ways a step back, and hurt by the enforced removal of gore, I still found it quite fun and it has my favourite version of Jason. He just feels like he is done with everyone's shit, so is just out to kill everyone as quickly as he can so he can get some damn sleep.
5: The Final Chapter - a solid entry, repetition is setting in by this point and it's definitely the sleaziest entry, but lots of great kills means it's always entertaining.
4: A New Beginning - by any objective measure, this is shit, with a truly awful killer reveal. But the thing is it's so batshit crazy, with the ice cream kill, robot dancing and redneck mother & son who seem to be the same age, that I kindof love it. When I learned it was made by a coked-out former porn director who just let his cast improv, I was not at all surprised.
3: Part 2 - for what is nothing more than a rushed cash grab to a rushed cash grab, this is far better than it has any right to be. Good pace, good kills, good finale, it all comes together really well.
2: Jason X - trash even by the standards of the franchise, but it knows full well it's trash, so the results are highly entertaining. We get a new setting, a big bodycount and Uber Jason, and that is just fine by me.
1: Jason Lives - this of all of them feels like the perfect balance of the formula, a celebration rather than a cash grab and just outright fun from beginning to end.

In his book All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger, Troma president Lloyd Kaufman lists this film as one of the five best Troma films ever made (along with The Capture of Bigfoot, also directed by Bill Rebane).[1]

How do I make sense of this?

New York is really like that, and it hasn't actually changed despite Times Square no longer being a mini ghetto. Look up Genovese Syndrome.

Jason X sucks dick.

I like Jason Goes to Hell but I acknowledge it as a massive guilty pleasure.

Part 8 is okay. It has moments. The final 20 minutes is pretty good. The kills are very dry which is a downer.
This should go down as one of the most misleading movie trailers.

Part 7 is okay. I don't like the final girl at all and it was cut to shit by the MPAA. Watching a fan-edit with the reinserted gore footage elevates it.

Part 6 is a lot of fun. One of the few kid friendly movies in the series.

Part 5 is another guilty pleasure of mine. I love it.

Part 4 is the best one. Bar none. No question. The best one. All the elements come together perfectly here.

Part 3 is okay. The 3D effect is more distracting than anything. Has some great kills. Also hints that Jason raped the final girl which was a plot point that was as quickly abandoned as it was introduced.

Part 2... Some love this one and I'm not a fan. Best thing to come out of the Shout Factory box set is the discovery of the long lost gore footage which elevates it to at least passable and above part 8 and Jason X.

The original is very slow. So very slow. Great kills, great opening scene and Betsy Palmer does an amazing job.

I love the remake. I'll go so far as listing it as my 2nd favorite.

Freddy VS Jason was very good despite some misgivings mostly when it came to CGI gore and Freddy only killing one guy.

Watched The Unnamable.

Didn't like it. Very boring.
