Sleep it off, Beecher.
So a good friend of mine is into urban exploring, and I've been wanting to get into that for a while. After a while, he finally agreed to take me with him and another friend. It was raining super heavily last night, but it cleared up nicely today.
We went to this old abandoned trailer park site that closed back in the 80s. They hauled all the trailers away, so it's just this big wooded area with old decaying roads running around through trees and what's left of people's gardens. In the back of it, there was what used to be an old swimming lake that we were really interested in, so after wandering around the ruins of the trailer park, we found a decaying trail and started heading downhill. After a bit of walking, we found a clearing overlooking the lake, with a clearly man-made concrete dike on the far side. We circled around the lake, and after getting close to the dike, we found some old trailer wreckage that had been cobbled together into a sort of shelter. It was deserted, so we figured it was abandoned, and we moved in to take pictures.
It was all a wreck, with kids' clothes and adults' clothes strewn everywhere, decaying furniture lying around, and a mattress under a makeshift roof in the back. Then we realized something: the clothes were dry. Not dry like left in the rain and the sun, dry like someone was actively keeping them out of the rain and then put them out to dry.
Ohhhh shit.
Decidedly spooked, we took a couple of pictures and debated whether to press onward or bail. We decided to keep going, but to stay on guard and watch out for anything suspicious. After poking around the dike, we did encounter someone; a couple of friendly guys with a dog and a target rifle. We figured that, even if there was some nutcase living in the wreckage, gunshots would be enough to keep him away. We explored a few more side trails, but at this point it was almost eight and the sun was setting. We decided we didn't really want to keep going after it got dark; hostile transients aside, several of the trails were flooded and the ruins were a veritable minefield of open manholes and broken pavement. We withdrew through the ruins and left to grab some brews and reflect on our experiences.
My dad used to pick it up for me all the time. Lots of creepy shit, but it's so cool to read about. We have a magazine dedicated to stuff like that here in NJ called "Weird New Jersey".
Busy. I'm leaving for Italy tomorrow.
Iron Dragon is boss. Mantis broke my balls. That place is teh shit, go there yearly.I went on 5 rides - Scrambler, Matterhorn (a spinning ride), Cedar Downs (a horse race ride), Iron Dragon (a small roller coaster) and the train.
My brother went on 5 roller coasters. I'm too fat to go on most roller coasters![]()
Leaving for Italy in a few hours. See you guys on the 31st.
Adidas? No surprise. Were you wearing a tracksuit too?I assume you're flying out of Newark? I almost lost my arm walking out of their monorail thing after it closed on the straps of my Adidas bag and started to move again.![]()
Celebrated my four-year wedding anniversary tonight. Took my wife out for prime rib.
Happy Anniversary brother! Mrs. Dude and I celebrated our 9 Year Anniversary on the 14th. Can you believe a woman has put up with my bullshit for 9 years?
Today was a good day. I went to work, finished listening to Stephen King's "It" on audiobook for the second time, came home and had our really good friends over for dinner. Their kids played with Little Dude all night and their oldest daughter brought me a drawing she did of the two of us baking muffins. I thought it was really cute that she drew the picture of her and I instead of my son or my wife or even my mom. I think maybe she has a crush on me. I was really touched by the gesture and hung her picture on my fridge. I even had her pick out which magnet to use. My friends told me that it was all she would talk about on the car ride home and she kept asking them what they think I thought about the picture. They said that I really liked it and her reaction was "I'm going to go home and draw him another picture!"
