RDO could have worked with its realistic, old setting for balance reasons.

I am going to try that ambulance police tactic on Vice City. Picking people up and driving carefully is tedious.

Basically, sourceport of the original game engine that fixes all sorts of engine issues, removes engine limitations, and adds extra features while preserving the feeling of the original game's engine.
I really hope so. The games are a pain to run in 60 fps.

It's not even really a sourceport like the Doom ones. Doom was made open source, but this is a reverse engineer, basically reconstructing a program that works just like GTA3's and VC's programs with brand new, original code. As long as they aren't copying any original unlicensed source then it's completely legit. You still need the original game assets to play it.

Like I said just before your reply, I was just describing what Boom was.

And, technically speaking, you still need the original game assets to play any Doom sourceport as well. Doom sourceports won't exactly run if you don't have IWADs of Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, or other similar idTech engines to run them off of.

Got it, the thread was a little confusing. Anyway it looks like right now that they've fixed some of the physics bugs above 30fps but not everything. They are actively seeking help to fix it, hopefully some uber-nerd will help with that, my C++ is way too rusty. But it's at least in theory a starting point to get some improvements like the Doom and Quake sourceports have done for their respective games, assuming it's not just a bunch of spaghetti code like reverse engineered projects often are. It's probably safe from DMCAs but as we all know it's pretty much a judgement call on the platform's behalf, though after the youtube-dl fiasco GitHub is probably more discerning now.

meanwhile GTA III and VC got reverse-engineered

get it quick, because it WILL be DMCA'd

I'm wondering if this means we can finally get some old-school "PS2 era GTA clone" indie games?

GTA III and Vice City use the Renderware engine. It would be nice to tinker in each engine code and see how movement changed or how they incorporated motorcycles in Vice City.

Doesn't somebody own Renderware?

True, but from what I'm reading, they reverse engineered games that were made in Renderware and filled in any remaining blanks with their own original code when necessary.

If they don't use the Renderware branding and name it something else, there's a good argument to be made that this is an entirely new source code/game engine that's similar to Renderware but isn't the exact same thing as it.

I don't know how good that'd be...

One thing i can jump into GTA for that i can't find in most other open worlds is the complete immersion factor in it, most of the games but especially VC and SA have such a great mood about them with the soundtracks and the look of their respective settings, not to mention the dialogue and characterizations.

You can't convince me that an Indie GTA clone will have the writing quality and humor from the earlier titles, let alone the soundtrack, it'll be choked up with references to memes and other indies, and God help us if they take a crack at any social or political commentary.

Side rant - One thing i dislike about indies is that they can't let a game's "magic" work itself out. If Bigfoot, Leatherhead, sharks in VC, Ratman and other "Urban Legends" in the series became what they were, was because of the speculation and gamers' imagination taking what was at most a passing nod from the devs and turning it into something bigger.

Put an independent studio at the helm and i can guarantee you they'll force in shit like Slenderman or whatever, craft an entire background around it and promote it on social media so youtubers can make up "theories" about it.

TL;DR: Indie GTA won't be any good

I don't necessarily think that's the case, that is very specific. I only see something like what you're describing being the case if they intentionally try to seriously imitate early GTA and its writing style/etc. The GTA fan theories were entirely a product of their time made up by bored kids.

To me it would be good if it was an affectionate parody/tribute of those kind of games, or something that tried to be totally different and have its own mood and distinct vibe. Something that tried to seriously emulate a 2000s GTA game (and attempt to force a similar playerbase) would be really sad and pathetic and shitty, like "Hunt Down the Freeman" or whatever.

Something that attempted to be original and have its own vibe and mood while maintaining the old GTA-clone aesthetic (if that makes any sense) could be really good, if it tried to be its own thing rather than entirely use people's nostalgia to become popular.

GTA isn't really a game you can make without the backings of a big studio which knows what it is doing. It's a very broad game, with a huge map, lots of missions, and ridiculously large amounts of dialogue Here's the script to GTA 4(i know the earlier games had a lot less dialogue and smaller stories, but still, it will be very long):

In my view smaller groups always struggled the most with good voice acting over anything. You can get pretty much everything to do with graphics and all that other shit out of the box with most engines they use, but you can't get voice acting out of it. That's even with small companies, let alone some group doing a passion project.
