SAN FRANCISCO — Google said on Friday that it would delete abortion clinic visits from the location history of its users, in the company’s first effort to address how it will handle sensitive data in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
The location data change will take place in the coming weeks, Jen Fitzpatrick, a Google senior vice president, wrote in a blog post. The policy will also apply to trips to fertility clinics, domestic violence shelters, addiction treatment facilities and other sensitive locations.
Google, which holds reams of intimate information about its billions of users, has come under scrutiny since the Supreme Court’s decision last week to strike down Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion after almost 50 years. Some supporters of reproductive rights have pushed people to delete apps that track their menstrual cycles online, while experts saidsearch and location data from companies like Google are more likely to be used as evidence.
The overturning of Roe has more broadly renewed questions about how much data and digital trails people have produced, which could be used to surveil or target those who try and get an abortion. In states that allow bans or other limits on abortion, law enforcement is expected to be focused on taking action against medical providers, but information about individuals — including location data, payments data and more — is not hard to obtain through data brokers and other sources.

The Alphabet Workers Union, a group representing more than 800 people who work for Google’s parent company, Alphabet, demanded on Tuesday that the search giant delete any personal data that law enforcement could try to use to prosecute those who are getting abortions.
With Friday’s announcement, while Google will delete some location data, it did not commit to automatically deleting search records about abortions, which may also become sought after. Users must individually opt to delete their search history.

Google has been sued by the state of Texas, accused of continuing to track users even when they use the Chrome web browsers’ supposedly private Incognito Mode — which may further erode confidence that the company will purge all data when people try to browse privately.
Google also made no commitments about changing the way it handles government data requests.
“We remain committed to protecting our users against improper government demands for data, and we will continue to oppose demands that are overly broad or otherwise legally objectionable,” Ms. Fitzpatrick wrote.
The company also said that users will soon be able to more quickly delete multiple menstruation logs stored on Fitbit, a health-tracking company owned by Google, rather than one at a time. The company also reminded users to employ existing settings options on Google to improve their online privacy.

What if all places were somehow labeled as abortion clinics? That could help delete some data.
Knowing the retards at google if they set it up so abortion clinics have some sort of flag rule attached to it one of those retards are going to accidentally fuck up and flag EVERYTHING as an abortion clinic.

Remember what happened when everyone all #fuckrussia on their user data? A fuckton of people got unpersoned.

I'm for anything that screws up big tech and their retarded machinations.

I can see that happening. Watch them go batshit when they fuck it up and gay bars, gun shops and schools get flagged as abortion clinics and people start publicly questioning why google is trying to invalidate gays by hiding the fact that gay bars exist/trolling them by claiming gay bars are abortion clinics, implying that google is trying to hide who is buying guns and messing with school data to enable pedos to not get busted for going within a certain distance of a school

They could really get fucked with by a clever troll doing shit like that

How is this even supposed to work from a technical perspective? It seems like there would be a "negative space" problem:

>we're tracking this person
>they left their house
>they went toward an abortion clinic
>"gosh! they disappeared!"
>::4 hrs pass::
>"there they are! next to the abortion clinic and heading home"
Yeah it makes zero sense. They'd have to also remove data on a few other random things to throw the trackers off, at least. Abortion clinics, gun shows, Thai restaurants, bowling alleys, and shady massage parlors- she could have been doing anything during those 4 hours!

This line of thought is bizarre. These corporations aren't forcing these women to get abortions. The woman chooses to, and the company pays for it.

I didn't know my employer was "playing" me the whole time by giving me dental insurance and healthcare coverage! Helping me pay my medical bills? Those insidious bastards! I'll go into debt instead, thank you very much! Hell, maybe I'll keep that broken limb just to stick it to the man! After all, anything that benefits a company is bad, even if it literally directly benefits you in specific!
You have companies actively saying 'we will pay for you to go out of state for an abortion' and companies are happy to do this for many reasons. The main one? It's a hell of a lot quicker for a woman to come back from an abortion than the nine weeks paid maternity leave, and many new mothers might not choose to come back.
Why the hell should a company even have a say in you having a family or not? Your decisions are your own and they should only care as far as it affects work. They're a company. Women get their abortions paid for if they ask and it's on company insurance, simple as. Women get their delivery paid for if it's covered by company insurance, simple as.
Again, one week to bounce back from an abortion compared to nine weeks paid maternity leave. Companies absolutely have a vested interest in ensuring ladies yeet the feet.

When will liberals realize they’re just being played by big mega corporations? Mega corporations are also offering women money to travel places to get an abortion so they can go right back to work. They like that you can’t have a family because having time for family means less money for them.
They realize this, but they think they control the corporations because they can get them to do things like modify their logo with rainbows while they turn you into debt slaves.

Liberals aren't even thinking that far ahead - they think in the here and now and having corporations wave the rainbow flag means that they're on the Good Side!

Meanwhile those nascent rulers of the new globohomo dystopia are content with plundering everything of worth while the media covers for them.

They delete everything related to that trip. They can delete that trip and several others. I'm sure google is analyzing and cross referencing stuff like blue tooth beacon data to have a damn good idea about everything you did while you left your house at a particular time.

They can likewise exclude searches and other metadata related to finding a provider or mail order, and ensure the top result for those searches directs to a charity/nonprofit in a sanctuary state that takes all possible precaution to preserve anonymity.

Their goal is to make subpoenaing them for metadata related to an out of state or mail order abortion fruitless. I don't think it's an external PR move - I think it's to mollify most of their engineering and r&d employees.

Getting an abortion is a choice. It benefitting the company doesn't matter whatsoever, it benefits the woman if she wants to get an abortion and chooses to get one. Sparing a woman 18 years of raising a child she aren't ready for vs missing work at a company that she'll only be employed a for a finite amount of time for 9 weeks? Gosh! I wonder why women who feel that they aren't ready to care for a child would take the former.

Not every pregnant woman is looking for an abortion. Abortions aren't coin-flip choices. If a woman wants an abortion, chances are that she was likely taking Plan B and other birth control pills beforehand to keep herself from getting pregnant, which failed and got her to the point of needing an abortion.

Managers aren't instructed to go to pregnant female workers out of the blue and go "Hey, are you interested in an abortion?" It's the woman's choice to ask. Even if these companies didn't cover abortions with their healthcare plans, that isn't suddenly going to make the woman want to keep the fetus and raise it into a child. If the woman wants to keep her baby, she'll keep her baby. If she wants to abort it, she wants to abort it. It's her life. Company interest is irrelevant.

Does this include the Herravad data that they collect from every Android phone and is used to map, within 10m, where people are in a heatmap, that they later sell to T-Mobile and other companies?

Herravad is a netowrk connection database that collects information about all the cell-towers that are near you and the signal strength (~= distance from the tower) It collects this data from all android phones and is uploaded via a tool/log called clearcut.
It is really cool and not very sophisticated at all really. Just log the signal strength and id of every cell tower nearby avery few tens of a second and you can accurately map where and the trail of a single individual throughout their day.

It also tracks download speeds for all first party apps, like maps, search, etc.

The commercial value of this is mostly to sell to cell providers to show them where people congentrate and where data is slow so they can add towers in that area.
More nefaritous usecases are obviously possible.
Using your post to do a PSA.
You can mitigate a ton of smartphone tracking by using LineageOS, CalyxOS, or GrapheneOS.

These are privacy oriented Android ROMs and nowadays are pretty easy to install. I think Calyx is the simplest to jump into but only has support for Google Pixel phones. Ironic, but there's a good reason.
GrapheneOS is the most hardcore so if you're less nerdy then probably don't start there.

They use an open source app store called f-droid by default but with the Aurora Store app you can access the Google Play store without any specific identifiable information, though I'd recommend de-googling altogether.

If you don't want to do this with your current phone, consider it with your next phone. CalyxOS is courtesy of the Calyx Institute which has its roots in Calyx from the 90s and is headed by Nicholas Merrill, famous for suing the FBI when he got a request (demand) to hand over user data that also served as a gag order. He never complied and he won.

If it's not apparent, I've used CalyxOS for a bit and while I haven't done a deep dive into potential data leaks, my phone has never automatically tried to connect to blacklisted or unfamiliar websites on my network which it would have to do to send data to Google or any other 3rd party since it's rare that it connects to the internet any other way.

ps If that is too much, Apple is unironically better for privacy out of the box than any Google (see: Android) device ever will be. Apple collects a lot of data but it's primarily for their own gain and there is an attempt to anonymize it. They're also tyrants on their app store about hidden tracking.
Similarly, Lineage, Calyx, and Graphene are all more anonymous than Apple ever will be.

Yeah but if a man wants to marry a woman shouldn’t he have access to the information if she has had abortion before or not? Some men believe strongly in God and may be fearful that if they get a woman pregnant the woman will get abortion. Christian men believe that abortion is murder so, that means his child has now been murdered. But I guess that should be a conversation that Christin man has with the woman before he has sex with her. And in retrospect this man may believe he needs to be married before having sex anyway actually. Hmm. So many questions.
So many questions. So much to ponder. The answer is really it's like they're just hard to explain. It's so hard to figure out. The answers are out there but I wonder will the questions is going forever and ever maybe one day there will be an answer but until then it is easy to just wonder
