rimworld looks pretty cool but its hella pricy
snd i was gonna get 112 operator during the steam sale but i didnt. i will def try and get it sinc my laptop can run it ;)
Rimworld is a bit pricy, but I'd say it's likely worth it. The mods for it really make it an incredible game. If you're shopping on Steam, I'd say you should keep it on your wishlist and wait for it to get hit with a sale again.

Thea 2 is a game you might like as well I'm just not 100% sure your laptop can run it.
  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
  • Processor: Dual Core 2.2 GHz or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DirectX 11 class GPU with 2GB VRAM
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 10 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX Compatible Sound Device
  • Additional Notes: Internet Access needed for coop
It's mostly text and still images, so if it can run it at all, it can run it. I mainly bring it up because it's on sale right now for like 12.50 USD.

Dwarf fortress, it will run on pretty much any laptop made in the last 8 years, though you might end up hitting FPS death sooner than most.
Age of Empires 2
Civilization 3
Space Empires 5

Stalker especially call of chernobyl. (imho dont bother with misery inspired mods, they tend to be boringnas fuck, like a even jankier factorio)
The total war series up to medieval 2,even modded it runs smothly
Hearts of iron up to the third installment
The Hegemony Rome games
Dawn of war 1
Doom and brutal doom

If you are asking how do I know that these can run on shitty laptops: I am an absolute mongoloid when it comes to computers and mine is almost 4 years old now.

Source engine games would probably run alright on it, considering the engine's 16 years old at this point.

The NOLF games are pretty alright.

Underrail. Amazing turn-based CRPG with incredibly challenging combat and a cool 90s aesthetic in a post-apocalyptic setting.

My time to shine had a shitty laptop for the longest time and I got pretty good at finding toasterware

Grand theft auto: san andreas Failing that maybe vice city
Papers please it's got a good atmosphere and a weirdly hypnotic gameplay loop
Stardew valley. Very cozy
Rimworld, Infinitely replayable
Sid Meier's Pirates
Spaz; space pirates and zombies
Bastion
Reccetear, Kawiaa desu weeb shit but genuinely great item shop sim
Railroad tycoon 2;
Uplink, Hollywood hacking sim
Duskers, A fun puzzle/strategy/hacking game built to resemble computing in the 1980
Monaco, is good fun if you have friends to play with

If you're looking for more I would check GOG you can get a lot of old software updated for modern OS there

How about a really well made emulator? PPSSPP for psp games is really well designed and optimized.
Retroarch is also a platform where you can download emulators primarily aimed at retrogaming. They recently added Beetle, amongst other PSX emus.
Still need to get the games for yourself, but it ran on my absolutely shitty windows 8.1 toshiba satellite. (i-5500, 1.20 ghz, etc) at low to medium settings.

uuuh you call that 'horrid specs'? I was running a computer with lower specs than that until like 2018. Should run Minecraft fine, also install Linux if you wanna get a little more juice out of it.

Classic Doom. There's a shitton of wads to download online as well as gameplay mods, never get's boring. Specs don't matter at all since it's from fucking 1993

I just had a few other ideas

Cataclysm dark days ahead
Free zombie rogue like developed by turbo autists pretty solid and if it doesn't work or you don't like it well it was free anyway

Morrowind
It's probably got the best world of any elder scrolls game but you may find it annoying if you've been spoiled by more modern titles

Thomas was alone
Narrative puzzle solving game

Patrician 3
Are you the sort of autist who wants to be a medieval merchant now's your chance

Starsector
Weird little indy title sold on its own web site for fifteen dollars nobody is quite sure what the minimums truly are but the numbers most people are quoting put you well on the safe side

If the idea of a survival game running on Calvin and Hobbes-style little kid logic sounds interesting to you, Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together run on everything newer than core duos if you turn on netbook mode in settings (which makes no visible difference unless you're playing on a 4k monitor). If you want a good deep chillout survival game where your deaths are generally your fault rather than RNG both are solid recommendations, although DST is probably the better pick of the two since multiplayer adds so much to the experience.

Best bet for either if is waiting for a digital storefront sale and getting the megapack since it runs like 13 bucks and gets you everything including all of original DS, its DLCs (which are very good) and two copies of DST.

Alternate answer : Spacestation 13. The learning curve hits like a truck though.

Jagged Alliance 2.
Deus Ex. Both 1 and Human Revolution, I could coax out acceptable frame rates out of an old Dell 5010 with an i5 450M and a Radeon HD5470M.
Gothic 1-3.
Disciples 1-2.
+1 for Gothic 1 and 2, they are some of the best games I have ever played, however I'd cross Gothic 3 off of that list. Even with the infamous Community Patch, Gothic 3 can drain ANY system and completely freeze it up, depending on which area of the map you are in, what spell you're casting or just whenever the game feels like kicking you in the balls.

Do try Gothic 1 and 2 though, really amazing stuff.

Oh and one more thing, if you are into adventure games, try Puzzle Agent.

System Shock 2
Vampire Bloodlines (with fan patches)
Hitman : Blood Money
Resident Evil (1, Zero & 4 are all on Steam, ignore 5&6)
Knights Of The Old Republic 1&2
Still Life / Post Mortem, a point & click adventure
The Witcher 1
the first three Thief games

Have fun

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is great and runs on absolute potatoes. Any game where you can fuck up someone's day by dumping their city into the sea gets my recommendation.
