I actually like GoldenEye still, but yeah I always wondered how it was "OMFG BEST FPS EVAR" when you had Duke 3D, PowerSlave (both vesions), Quake, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Quake II, Hexen II...

Edit: I think it's better than Turok though, sorry.
In comparison to other N64 shooters. In retrospect, Doom 64 is the best N64 FPS.

But if we're going with other mid-late 90's FPS there's way better ones like the ones you listed, then there's Thief, SiN, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and Half-Life.

Goldeneye is merely okay, it only got big because it was one of the first non-shitty FPS game on a console, but the N64 controller and low framerates made it age like milk.

The leaked XBLA port does help, but it's nowhere near as fun as most PC shooters from the era.

It was the only one that didn't ran like shit, that alone made it age way better than other N64 FPSes.

Those as well, I just wanted to list ones that were before or right around when GoldenEye came out.

I'll actually just take Quake 64 honestly, even if it's not actually that good a port.

I just really like me some Quake, though lack of 4 player splitscren or bots sucks cock.

Doom 64 is better than GoldenEye though.

I actually played Quake 64 before the PC version. Even in it's butchered form without the Trent Reznor soundtrack I still liked it more than Goldeneye.

I'm probably the only person who prefers Aubrey Hodges's soundtrack to Reznor's.

Not quite sure why, but something about Trent's work on the original just didn't do it for me.

I like his Doom 64 score a lot. But Reznor is a legend. But it's cool if you don't gel with him, it's a to each his own situation. If you're going to check out NIN you should check out The Downward Spiral or The Fragile.

Oh lol don't worry, I love Nine Inch Nails, this is really just an outlier situation I think.

It's espeically weird cause I usually really enjoy his film work.

Goldeneye was also family friendly, well compared to a lot of those other ones anyways, and had splitscreen multiplayer. Word of mouth was a big way of spreading the hype. I remember playing it at a friend's house after a soccer game once and then having to get it, for example. It spread really quickly through our neighborhood.

As someone else mentioned, Goldeneye had a T for teen rating, so it was far easier for us to get as kids than Doom 64, Quake 64, etc. etc.

And if I'm not mistaken, Doom 64 didn't have multiplayer at all, and Quake 1 on N64 only had two player multiplayer.

Goldeneye popularity has everything to do with it's split screen multiplayer. It was a real draw on the N64.

I know that, but I'm not sure how that could be a draw when Team Fortress and every other FPS deathmatch game was a thing.

To briefly explain the rights limbo:

Goldeneye 007 was developed by Rare, but published by Nintendo. The Rare acquisition did not include GE007 from Nintendo. Even so, Activision HAD exclusive publishing rights to 007's likenesses until 007 Legends. MGM and OEM, the movie rights holders, has say on those general rights.

I'm guessing now, Nintendo approved the GE007 rights for Rare since they are friendlier with MS now.
My impression was always that they had the license to make one game of it on one platform and the Broccoli people wanted more money. This is were licensing would come in, Nintendo had Goldeneye, EA had the movies after Goldeneye, Activision had the movies after that but none of them had any license to make games related to movies prior or after their licensing deal. Activision couldn't make a TWiNE in the same way EA couldn't make a Goldeneye. A remake was made by Activision(Eurocom wtf) but who knows how that happened.

I know that, but I'm not sure how that could be a draw when Team Fortress and every other FPS deathmatch game was a thing.
You could all sit on a couch like a LAN-party without lugging around computers, that was fun.

On the Nintendo 64?
Because consoles were inherently more accessible and widespread than a mod for a PC game back in those days?
Within 4 years on the same system I could be playing Turok Rage Wars, The World is Not enough, Quake II 64, and Perfect Dark, not to mention Duke Nukem 64 came out not too long after and that had a solid multiplayer mode as well

Once again, Goldeneye was rated Teen and came out 3-4 years earlier than many of those games so it got way more exposure and playtime.

Not to mention didn't require an expansion pack to not be total ass in the case of Perfect Dark.

That's 4 years worth of time for Goldeneye to cement its relevancy though.

4 years is surprisingly a longer period of time than you might give it credit for.

(Also, The World Is Not Enough and Quake II sucked on N64. Perfectly playable, but I don't recall anyone really scrambling to play them. Same-ish story for Perfect Dark from a multplayer standpoint, and Duke 64 was always a bit niche.)

None of the games aside from Perfect Dark needed an expansion pack.

You do have me mostly on the ratings thing and years thing though, except the World is not Enough, that was Teen just like GoldenEye.

I'm also not arguing in disagreement of why it got big, I'm just sad people didn't bother giving anything else a shot.

Because once people have their established "Old Reliable", there's not much reason to branch out, and Goldeneye was already easy to pick up and play as a "party" game/with the bros as it is.
