i watched sinthetic man playing this and it looked the same as the first rebooted one and boring as fuck. the state of games
I don't know the side content for the game seems to be fairly elaborate and worthwhile. You can certainly explore more than you could in the first game, and there's a large variety of enemies which makes combat more interesting.

Whatever shortfalls the story may have in the end are going to probably be looked over in favor of all the other stuff you can do in the game.

Playrd the game for 8 hours and got to elf world, so far the gameplay and exploration are fun (though the hardest difficulty is just annoying until you get more tools) but holy shit is the plot and writing are bad.
The game goes full on "Odin is Trump and the Aesir are all big meany poopy heads" to the point it's just feels hateful towards the Norse mythology. At least in the previous game you had Kratos' relationship with boy and the hope there will be some interesting twist, only to discover it's as plain as it can be.

When you have character dialogue literally be "let's count the ways Odin and Thor are evil" then you should fire all the writers. Especially as it's incredibly hypocritical dialogue that talks about how the other side are evil for being completely assured of their righteousness, while having the main characters assure at killing Odin.

I don't think anyone knows what's the plot. There is a conflict for conflict sake despite Odin literally giving Kratos what he wants in the beginning. The characters constantly talk about averting ragnarok while also about how how they should kill Odin for some reason.

The worst part by now is the part where you rescue a whale because OIL BAD and Kratos is anti slavery which is totally in line for a fucking Spartan. This is Captain Planet tier writing.

Besides that, the game itself looks okay, animations are janky but it seems like nothing changed from the previous iteration, which begs the question of why it took four years to make.

In some way the series really embodies the downfall of gaming:

Original game are edgy as shit affairs, new game is basically a skinwalker of the original character with stock fatherhood plot to attract redditors. The violence went from impactful and bloody to being as interesting as fights in MCU. The whole plot went from something relatively concise to extremely slow and plodding. And the plot tries to act as if it's deep and meaningful, while being shallower than a puddle.
Dear god. Can we just have a reboot and bring back TC Carson? We’ll pretend this era was a fever dream, and Kratos can be trapped on another plane with all the Greek gods, trying to navigate wtf happened and how to leave.

Idk something else, please.

All of this is about what I expected. I'm glad I bought Sonic: Frontiers instead.

Except MCU fights in the movies took inspiration directly from games. The same suspension of physics and all. They're even choreographed the same. Saying a game fight looks like the MCU is a bad comparison. Like for example look at all the stuff that Square Enix put out for any of the later final fantasy media post PS1. You have similar shit taking place.
I meant more that the violence has no impact, it's like how you have Captain America gunning down people and no one bats an eye, but The Joker film has him shoot a guy with an actual gunshot sound and a spray of blood and everybody lost their mind.
Also the reason why Kratos doesn't take Odin up on his offer because he doesn't trust him. Odin in the myths is a known trickster, it's heavily implied through his body language even when he's first introduced. He acts and moves as if he's hiding something.
Kratos didn't plan to do anything anyways and the only action he should have taken was stopping his son from doing things he didn't want him to do. Seems like it was worth a shot.

My biggest gripe actually was the whole insipid RPG Loot bullshit which just dragged the pace of the game so hard. In the original God of War Kratos would just get an upgrade via progression or the player would just spend points ala DMC to get better attacks and stuff. "Oh boy I got new Leather Bracers which make my recovery a little faster and gives me a sliver of HP." Seriously who likes this game design crap keep that shit in RPGs where it belongs.
I really enjoyed how you could make Krato's wear armor and clothes. That did more then anything else to showcase how much Krato's changed.

Although I was annoyed there's seemingly no way to glamour up armor you want to keep wearing.

So with all the writing and tonal issues, why exactly is this game being hailed as GOTY and one of the all-time greatest achievements in the medium?
Journos will suck off most garbage Sony first party makes. There's a reason people call their games oscarbait in vidya form.

Ok, but are you forgetting that Zeus betrayed Kratos in God of War 2? There’s a pretty good reason Kratos wouldn’t trust Odin, especially when Odin’s grandkids went after him in 2018.

Like I said, for Kratos he would have bunkered down either way. Though thinking about it, unless it's revealed the entire plot is "According to Keiaku" by Odin (which I doubt the game will do), then none of the plot would have happened if Odin hasn't interacted with Kratos, which is more terrible writing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Anthony Burch involved in the writing, if they were willing to get him then I cannot imagine the rest of the team

Certainly not an expert of god of war games but from what I’ve seen in the thread I have some questions…

1. Wouldn’t the man who was betrayed/used by pretty much every god he’s had the displeasure of interacting with have no desire to cooperate or even like a god?

2. Wouldn’t the man whose weapons of (no) choice are chains wrapped around his arms as a reminder he is forever shackled to the will of the gods maybe, maybe, not like the idea of slavery? A man forced down his path with no will of his own constantly making decisions to try and free himself? I dunno it might have an impact on his view of slavery.

3. Didn’t Kratos kill Odin’s grandkid/son? Is he supposed to not get involved and let that slight go?

What was the reason why T.C. Carson was dropped from his said role? The other thing I remember about him was that he also was in Final Destination 2.

I'm not a Sony cuck anymore so unfortunately I do not own a PS4 or PS5 and cannot play Ragnarok. However I did watch the entire playthrough and it's cutscenes. I've always been a GOW fan and I honestly loved every second of Ragnarok and I think the older lighthearted Kratos is so much better. Not gonna lie I needed to wipe away a tear or two just watching this game, it really is cinematic and deserves GOTY.

It's fine if you don't agree. I can definitely think of a few things I would change about the game - the combat being one of them. I think most of all I liked the fact that Odin looks like a harmless old man - they drove it in our heads that Odin was the big bad for a while now, and his appearance really contradicted this as well as his voice. Heimdall also wasn't what I was expecting and I loved that, he's just this sniveling arrogant prick when I expected him to be burly and intimidating like the other characters. Fat Thor is accurate and I loved this portrayal of him the most in any franchise with a Thor.

I get why people would be upset about Angrboda being Black but I liked her design anyway, the hair is cool and the tattoos/markings are a nice touch. Not "lore accurate" to have a Black Nordic giant I suppose, but eh I didn't mind. I feel like if you want a Black/Hispanic/Asian or whatever character in your game you should at least have them fit into the setting and not have it be so they stick out like a sore thumb, and Santa Monica Studios did just what they should've - they made her fit.

I’m not sure, but I miss him. It feels like they wanted to do a new series, but corpos said no, so they settled for making over GOW (including axing him).

I don’t even hate everything about the new direction, I just wish it was an original series.

My main problem with Ragnarok is Atreus for whatever reason going to Asgard and trying to work with Odin to change the Ragnarok prophecy (to save Kratos).

Even if you claim that Atreus never fully trusted Odin, the very fact that he went into Asgard and put himself at the Asgardian's mercy despite numerous examples of Odin, Thor, and the other Asgardians being miserable, backstabbing, murderous bastards who would happily genocide and enslave anyone who so much as gave a side eye. It doesn't make Atreus look desperate, it makes him look like an idiot ignoring all known facts to move the plot along.

If Im remembering it right, the stated reason had something to do with wanting the voice and mocap actor to be the same. Which I think T.C couldnt commit to for some reason.

I was pissed off too when I heard the news, but Christopher won me over. Went in with no expectations and I was very pleasantly surprised by the depth and seriousness of his performance. He did the character justice and make his turn believable.

Really the only character in the whole franchise who's characterization has bothered me is Athena starting from god of war 3. Her swerve from being an advisor/ sister figure to Kratos, to becoming an evil controlling schemer was so odd and out of place that for a good while I assumed it was somebody else wearing her face.

Lately, ive read the tie in comics for 2018 and they were pretty dam good. Krato's lore for anger management is going into the forest to let wolves chew on his arms. Lots more gore and understanding of his thought process. He's controlling his anger less out of good intentions and more because he's pissed off that he cant control it in the first place.

The 2021 comic was great too. With a wandering vagabond Krato's desperately trying to get the hell away from his past. Constantly hounded by Athena and some Egyptian god who want him to save some people and fulfill his destiny. Krato's basically has to be dragged kicking and screaming into helping out some civilians, and he bitches every step of the way. It's great and self contained.

I still haven't gotten my hand's on Ragnarok but ill give it a fare shake when I do. If I dont like it, then you know you've got a problem.

I stopped being lazy finally and looked it up. You were right, but it wasn’t that he wouldn’t, it was that his body didn’t fit.

“Going into God of War (2018), Cory Barlog, the director of the game, wanted the voiceover and motion capture to be provided by the same person and Carson's body type didn't match how Kratos looked in-game. Hence, the casting of Christopher Judge instead”

I might try it if it ever comes to PC (I really don’t want to pay for it), and I’ll have a stronger opinion. For now, I’m just slightly disappointed, but not blackpilled. I’ll get around to the first one when I reach the end of my current backlog.
