So with all the writing and tonal issues, why exactly is this game being hailed as GOTY and one of the all-time greatest achievements in the medium?

Is that alone the reason for it? Even the most positive reviews I've seen either barely mention the writing and tone problems, or not at all. Some so however state that they felt it drags a bit too long.

It pretty much is. Critics have a known bias for Sony. The movie game formula does appeal to them after all. I say that as someone who used to like quite a bit of Sony’s shit, like God of War of course.
Also the original planned ending for the franchise was Krato's becoming one of the 3 wisemen and meeting baby Jesus so.. yeah. Im enjoying catholic Kratos.
✝️
Looked it up and I never knew that. Two other men would also destroy the Norse and Egyptian Pantheons and would become the two other wisemen. It’s an interesting connection to the real world in saying “this is why none of these gods exist anymore, because they’re all dead.”

This is NOT God of War

This franchise is dead bros.

But yeah, God of War is boring now because Kratos “dOeSn’T wAnT vIoLeNcE aNyMoRE!!!!”
I played GOW2018 a year ago and throughly enjoyed it despite minor annoyances. My biggest gripe actually was the whole insipid RPG Loot bullshit which just dragged the pace of the game so hard. In the original God of War Kratos would just get an upgrade via progression or the player would just spend points ala DMC to get better attacks and stuff. "Oh boy I got new Leather Bracers which make my recovery a little faster and gives me a sliver of HP." Seriously who likes this game design crap keep that shit in RPGs where it belongs.

I really did enjoy 2018s story, Kratos trying his best to be a good father while being haunted by his soap opera past. But yeah as your picture conveys the baffling decision to remove the over the top gore was ridiculous. All the zombie like cannon fodder Kratos fights for 12 hours easily could have been humans whose allegiance aligned with Odin and the Norse gods. It's like they were going for an ESRB Teen Rating.

And big sacks of money and because for some strange reason the more preachy sony games are considered ways to "stick it to the chuds".

And well, from what I'm reading, it's basically a marvel movie feel wise which most of the mouth breathers actually enjoy.

I had a good time with 2018, but the bosses sucked for the most part though the gameplay loop was solid and I did kill all the Valkiries in hard. Story wise it was ass since it was basically go up the mountain plus tangents but I enjoyed the dynamic between Atreiud and Kratos.

If they have killed the dynamic ,odds are I will have fun with the gameplay loop but zone out with the story. Hell, that Freya becomes buddy buddy instead of a major antagonist is a gigantic fucking copout.

I still expect everyone and their mother to furiously fellate this game and snub Elden Ring from it's deserved game of the year crown.

It's soyboy bait. This has been the case since Last of Us came out in 2012 and all the journo hacks held it up as "the Citizen Kane of gaming." Low IQ Marvel dialogue that they can follow, hamfisted progressive story beats, brain dead gameplay.

It's the perfect formula for the NPC generation. I'm sure there will be a major plot point where a stronk wammen teaches the old white men a lesson about... I dunno, something something patriarchy.

Any sex minigame in this game?

Kinda weird if the one god pantheon that was more coomer than the Greeks would be so PG.

Every video I watch, it feels like everyone besides the people from the last game (Kratos, Freay, Atreus, the Dwarves, Mirmir) just act too...modern? Almost like they're intentionally trying to act like hipsters or something.

Am I crazy? At first I thought they were just all low energy but the more I see the more it just feels like they're modern people in makeup.

Blame the hack writer they hired who is unable to keep consistency.

Ragnarok and 2018 have different writers. And not trying to sound like a prude, but the use of “fuck” in Ragnarok makes no sense. Most modern swears didn’t even exist back then, so why the characters speak like modern Americans makes no sense to me. Back then you had a game like God of War 3 but it didn’t contain a single “fuck” or “shit” because it didn’t make sense for the time.

Yeah, I was't sure if I was just misremembering 2018 or not but all of the swears were really throwing me off in the scenes I saw. And then I saw Thor call Kratos "dumbass" at one point and it felt wrong too.

The swears are there because stuff like Game of Thrones also used them. That's kind of what did it in terms of inspiration, just look at how much Tyrion Lannister just curses and how others berate people.

Playrd the game for 8 hours and got to elf world, so far the gameplay and exploration are fun (though the hardest difficulty is just annoying until you get more tools) but holy shit is the plot and writing are bad.
The game goes full on "Odin is Trump and the Aesir are all big meany poopy heads" to the point it's just feels hateful towards the Norse mythology. At least in the previous game you had Kratos' relationship with boy and the hope there will be some interesting twist, only to discover it's as plain as it can be.

When you have character dialogue literally be "let's count the ways Odin and Thor are evil" then you should fire all the writers. Especially as it's incredibly hypocritical dialogue that talks about how the other side are evil for being completely assured of their righteousness, while having the main characters assure at killing Odin.

I don't think anyone knows what's the plot. There is a conflict for conflict sake despite Odin literally giving Kratos what he wants in the beginning. The characters constantly talk about averting ragnarok while also about how how they should kill Odin for some reason.

The worst part by now is the part where you rescue a whale because OIL BAD and Kratos is anti slavery which is totally in line for a fucking Spartan. This is Captain Planet tier writing.

Besides that, the game itself looks okay, animations are janky but it seems like nothing changed from the previous iteration, which begs the question of why it took four years to make.

In some way the series really embodies the downfall of gaming:

Original game are edgy as shit affairs, new game is basically a skinwalker of the original character with stock fatherhood plot to attract redditors. The violence went from impactful and bloody to being as interesting as fights in MCU. The whole plot went from something relatively concise to extremely slow and plodding. And the plot tries to act as if it's deep and meaningful, while being shallower than a puddle.

I was rolling my eyes at the kratos is against le hecking bad slavery because he is a chungus wholesome soydad now.
Wasn't he the same dude who fucked over anyone who dared interact with him and also did the whole poseidon princess retardation?

Except MCU fights in the movies took inspiration directly from games. The same suspension of physics and all. They're even choreographed the same. Saying a game fight looks like the MCU is a bad comparison. Like for example look at all the stuff that Square Enix put out for any of the later final fantasy media post PS1. You have similar shit taking place.

Also the reason why Kratos doesn't take Odin up on his offer because he doesn't trust him. Odin in the myths is a known trickster, it's heavily implied through his body language even when he's first introduced. He acts and moves as if he's hiding something.
