If I was still in college and taking an art course, I'd totally print some of her illustrations to show to the teacher for their opinion. I'm pretty sure my former digital arts teacher would rant for an hour, minimum.
It's funnier then that. It was the artist behind Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids (in my humble opinion, a daily newspaper comic only marginally better than Family Circus and Mary Worth). The picture of Sonichu by Christian Weston Chandler, age 7, was shown to a national market possibly larger then Nintendo Power (at the very least more people would have been looking at the page and maybe glimpsed it). At any rate, the guy found out the artist in question was actually 27 and was shocked at the very least.cubesandcubes said:MysticMisty said:She's better then some artists I've seen, but some of her illustrations are really terrible. Sort of like that time when a troll sent one of Chris' Sonichu drawings to Nintendo Power and the editor truncated the indicated age of the artist from 27 to 7.

As for Ms. Tesch, what really bugs me about her illustrations is whenever she draws dripping liquid. Those fake as hell teardrop shapes look awful and don't even begin to look right next to her (attempted) realistic art style. Also bad is the way she draws hair. And I swear the human half of the first book cover was inspired by Pamela Anderson or some other woman with tons of plastic surgery.
That's because it's over-detailed in a bad and horribly wrong kind of way. When attempting to draw and color realistically, you don't outline the hair in small clumps (hell, you wouldn't outline anything at all), you create the impression of the individual strands with pencil strokes, in the case. Between the hair and the dripping blood, I'm not sure which horrible aspect bothers me more.random_pickle said:The hair on the "normal" side of the face really bugs me for some reason.

Why the hell did she draw a face that's half normal, half Medusa-style monster anyways? As far as I know that face doesn't appear in the first book. Are you even allowed to make a cover that has nothing to do with the story for legit books (that don't go for the minimalist cover)?
TheIncredibleLioness said:Yeah, the artwork is hit and miss a lot of the time, though I haven't seen all of the chapter artwork (doesn't each chapter have its' own little picture to go with it?) Her mother's art isn't Chris-level, obviously, but it's not great either. For example, let's look at the woman's face:

Sorry about the line down the middle; it didn't match up perfectly and I think I got the bit of the monster face in my selection too. (I actually didn't realize it, but the cover picture seems to be on an angle?) As you can see, aside from the fact that this woman seems to be still living in the 1980s, what with her huge hair and excess makeup, the proportions in general just seem off -- sure, her face is divided up into thirds as it should be, but stuff like the size of the eyes, eyebrows, and lips just seems too big or too small for a face of that size. Maybe, and I'm being generous here, the artist only drew the half of the face and didn't intend for it to be mirrored, but that just makes it look even worse.
And I'm seconding what MysticMisty said about the hair -- in this case, less is more. I see a lot of artists make that exact same mistake, where they think that realistic hair means detailing everything. Not to mention the way it falls is just weird to me -- it's relatively close to the head at the top, but seems to get bushier as it falls down the side of her face. I'm not even going to get into how flat the face looks -- she didn't need a lot of shading, but some shading around the bridge of the nose, where the eye sockets would be, would do wonders in making the nose appear less flat.
I'll admit, the monster side is kind of cool though -- the snake hairs (I assume) remind me of Medusa. You could probably say the scales on the skin are too detailed, though to me it doesn't come off as glaringly wrong because it's not real, if that makes sense.

All a bunch of lies. The books are practically as good as any self-published books - they don't get the same sort of industry exposure major publishers can generate (reviews in media, availability in smaller and foreign stores, translations, etc).Alan Pardew said:I wonder how her books sell like hotcakes in the first place.
