I've been eyeing Rune Factory for awhile. Is there a specific one you'd recommend to someone new, or should I get whatever's easiest?
I started with Rune factory 4 cause it's the first one where you can just be a girl from the beginning and date guys and I had a great time with it. I originally got it on 3DS but there's a special edition that's available on the newest platforms including steam and I imagine that's a great place to start.

That's the thing, I played all of the Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon games and my husband said that these games were originally a spin off of those games and if you like those games, you will like these games, but it turns out he was wrong and I wasn't a bit fan of Rune Factory 4 which I am disappointed about
They play exactly the same so I'm curious why you were so disappointed with it. The same controls, the same tools. Same hoarding. The only thing different is the inclusion of rpg elements, setting, and art style.

The funny thing about Rune Factory is that you don't really HAVE to engage in the rpg content because if you just farm like a lunatic, you can even GROW swords and shields eventually. You can use your massive amount of funds to purchase equipment. In Rune Factory 4 in particular, Arthur sells random equipment and sometimes OP stuff. If you really want to break the game, as soon as you unlock the secret dungeon in the castle basement you can open chests to get end-game gear and steamroll the game.

Rune Factory is a game of flexibility, which is not like what Harvest Moon/Bokumono offers. For this reason, I find it superior to HM and Stardew Valley. If you find comfort in the structure of Harvest Moon, then I can see you not liking Rune Factory.

5 so far is pretty different from 4. Combat is similar to the earlier Tales of games and the overworld feels like an Atelier game since everything is full 3D now. Everything does feel a bit floaty. These games definitely more for someone who prefers RPGs over pure farming games. Harvest Moon might be more up your alley.
Rune factory 5 looks really generic and boring to me, like it lost that comfy feeling compared to previous games and others in that category.

Yeah, cooking games were awesome, I loved Cooking Mama as well. I remember playing the crap out of this one flash game where you decorate cakes when I was a kid.
Cooking Mama is great! I used to play it on the DS, and the stylus is so perfect for it that it's hard to imagine it any other way.

The Papa Louie series was my favorite. The only real difference between any of those games is what food they use, but they're all pretty fun. Or I remember them being fun, at least.

I'll look into it. Thank you!

I guess the sims and stardew valley. I like to larp as southern redneck who is a slave to a black man.

Kiwi Females, I come to you in a time of need. I used to have an application on my computer (don’t remember what it was called but it started with W and the icon was a big W too) with all sorts of computer games, some free and some not. It had Diner Dash, Purble Place, Burgershop, etc etc.

There was one game on there that I am DYING to find but I just can’t remember the name of it. The main character was a spoiled rich girl who’s father made her take over this run down zoo/restaurant empire—yes I said zoo/restaurant. Most of the game was taking orders at different restaurants by clicking ingredients and occasionally picking up money or tickets to instantly complete the guests orders, but part of the game was also about renovating different zoo exhibits. I remember there was a seal, a monkey and possibly a zebra? You also worked together with the ghost of a chef who I think died because the restaurant critic killed him or something as a plot twist idk I can’t remember.

But if any of you guys played this and remember the name, plz halp.

On an unrelated note: does anyone watch Izzzyzzz? She also covers a ton of nostalgic “girl” games (and online games in general) as well as “girly” drama like the littlest pet shop fandom (apparently that exists) and the Warrior Cats fandom. Imo she’s not particularly like hilarious or anything but it’s a fun & often surprisingly informative watch for anyone who likes a good dose of memberberries once in a while.

Was it a CD Rom? I feel like I had something similar. Would’ve been around 2002-04ish based on the device I recall playing it on.

And yes - love her content, it’s so much fun! Even stuff I didn’t play or was too old for still feels great. Her video on The Path is excellent!

No, it was one of the free-to-play games on my computer game application.
I mean, it might have a CD ROM release as well. I know tons of the games that I played on that application had CD Roms as well, like Diner Dash. Insaniquarium was on there too ofc.

I can't help you with this mystery game, but it does remind me of this series of puzzle games from the creator of Tetris which I really liked, I think it was Microsoft Puzzle Pack or something? They are very underrated, but they are really fun and up there with Tetris, especially this one called Fringer where you are a sailor that has to untangle rope before the tide comes in. The soundtrack for a lot of the games are pretty good too.

If any of you want to break the economy of the first Story of Seasons game on 3DS, get the seed maker, textile studio and some flax seeds. You can turn the flax into golden cloth with zero extra ingredients and the golden cloth sells for 5000-7000 gold each depending on the quality of your flax harvest. Sacrifice some flax to the seed maker to get seeds to replant the field and make cloth to sell with the rest. Also it grows all year round. I had a small field of the stuff because I didn't want to completely cheese the game and wanted to grow other things but the flax field still got me like 500k gold per harvest from turning it all into golden cloth.

This trick doesn't work in any of the sequels though since they nerfed it by actually requiring gold ore to make golden cloth, which you can only get by mining and is one of the less common ores to come across.

Oh my gosh, I did that too! The only thing I didn't like about the first Story of Seasons game is that it is a bit slow at first.

Olive Town is amazing, but after unlocking the hydroponics plant, I had the problem of "now what?"

I absolutely loved SoS: Trio of Towns, hands down my favorite farming game. I played Stardew more than any reasonable person does, but SV really started to feel like the holes on the game were bigger than in ToT after a couple years. I basically want to beat anybody who says it's the only farming game worth playing. I'm glad Concerned Ape finally went to make a new game. SV has way too much shit now.

I tried Olive Town when it had a free week on the Switch and found it profoundly lacking compared to either game. Was a bit excited for RF5 but it launched pretty buggy, the characters looked kinda dumb, and I preferred RF4's gwaffix style.

Now I'm too busy for farming games, they eat my life.

I have it too, but haven't played it in a long time. I kinda lost interest in it because I got stuck in the game.
I don't know if it has a steep learning curve or I'm just stupid, but I reached a point where I couldn't do anything. I couldn't build new stuff for my farm, buy new animals or make clothes. I spent most of the time growing tomatoes and foraging shit to sell.
Maybe you have to be very patient and keep playing until you unlock all the features, I don't know.
I enjoyed Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns a lot, so I thought this SoS game was going to be the same.

I really enjoyed Trio of Towns myself and also haven't played it in years. I'd like to go back at some point though, I never got around to getting married. Haven't tried Olive Town yet, and I think I'll wait a bit longer for RF5.

I really need to try Trio of Towns, I kind of skipped over it because it was released during a really busy time in my life that I just didn't have time to play video games, especially ones that required that much of an investment and then when life settled down, I forgot about it.

My favorite variation of this is that in every Rune Factory game you can use scrap metal to craft the highest thing you can and even though it fails and consumes RP, it will still give lots of skill points. Just a matter of getting lots of scrap metal and food to restore RP. Equip a heart pendant for extra skill points. Easy max level craft, forge, cooking, chemistry. GG

I am so happy that I'm not the only one who discovered the flax trick in SoS.

@Crystal Coomer What did you disagree with?
Of what context?

WildTangent probably, that logo was very distinctive. Use to be in all the internet cafés.
