That's literally it though. I have a friend who whales for Granblue that refused to even touch Genshin just because of the rates. Not because of the grind, not because of the resin, not becasue he didn't like the gameplay, just the rates alone turned him away. To understand it, you need to think of gacha addicts as customers to the most retarded casino on the planet. They want the rush of rolling and acquiring waifus that may or may not feed into another addiction, like scoring big damage numbers or OCD-fueled collect-a-thons. The game itself is just a conduit to pull the slot machine lever over and over again. What the fuck is wrong with people who pick up a game and instantly whale? Are their dopamine receptors that fried?
This varies from game to game and attracts different people depending on what's in the gacha and what the rates are. I would say that people who whale for Genshin are more in it for the cheese and power. The more you whale, the more broken units and weapons you acquire and you can clear content like it's nobody's business. The rates are terrible, but the pity system is very predictable so you can make fairly easy calculations to see how much money it'll cost you to get what you want. However, that's why gacha players who are in it for the gamble hate Genshin, because the odds of you pulling what you want out of nothing is practically non-existent. Since I started playing in December, I've rolled maybe one unit outside of pity range.
I'm more in the camp of I like the game, the character designs are pretty, I'll pay for a few extra resources but that's about it. Anything else feels like a massive waste of money.
