watching 2001 nitros (lol) and sean ohaire was celebrating post match to the shitty NBT theme.. when buff randomly appears on a turnbuckle and blockbusters ohaire. the music instantly stopping pretty much the second ohaire hits the mat made me realize that is one of my favorite (tropes?) things that happens that's an unwritten rule in wrestling: if somebody gets their ass beat while their music is playing, the sound truck needs to cut the music as fast as possible. only exception to this rule is tazz

made me wonder what the in universe kayfabe autistic logic would be behind that rule. besides just so the poor bastard don't get stomped out while his own theme music is playing and end up with theme ptsd or something

I was never a fan of DDP when he was an active wrestler, mostly because I wasn't too into WCW, but damned if he isn't a hero to me. What a legend.

You could tell how much it means to Luger, too. Dude seemed revitalized after Cody showed up.

You missed out on a lot of good shit when it was good, man. I loved the fact Nitro ran back to back so I could watch RAW, which was often still taped, and then after Raw Switch over for Nitro. I got like 4 hours of wrestling a night for awhile because RAW was an hour and Nitro went to 2. If anything watch the Randy Savage DDP feud.

I think him being crippled was karma for beating Miss Elizabeth.

Back to why this is such a great thread compared to others, part of it is because even those who are into workrate know it isn't the be-all and end-all of wrestling. I don't think anybody here believes Dean Malenko should have been world champion in 1997.

If he was 6'4 with his skillset he could have been a world champion in the mid 90s easily, but he would have never been a face since he gave off such a shitty personality when on the mic somehow. Maybe I'm tainted by years of wrestlers saying he's a dick.

Looks like they took Jon Moxley's mantra of bleeding in every match seriously. Now the emotional impact is no longer there due to seeing blood every now and then in a match. They want to be like CZW 2.0. Their constant injuries (from doing and taking bumps) and bleeding like shit is why they're still seen as a glorified indie show.

It boggles my mind why they had that as the first match in the first place. The only reason why I got hooked on AEW in the past was the literal bloody match between Cody and Dustin. The latter proved he can still wrestle and the segment after the match was a good-feel moment. I hate to rag about AEW's negatives all the time but finding good things about AEW right now is like trying to find a gold nugget in a big pile of mixed shit and trash. I think the only good-feel moment I'll ever see in AEW if some face/likable heel stable finally puts an end to the "Desu Riderz" for good.

That's the shame of it. They could have been a viable competitor to WWE if Tony had made the wrestlers listen to the agents that they had there, Arn Anderson, Jerry Lynn, Dean Malenko and other former pros, who could get these guys out of their indie mindset and teach them how to work, and work safely. Instead, Tony lets the "talent" do whatever they want while he went on a shopping spree, buying up every former WWE guy and gal he could. With so many new "toys" to play with, some of the guys they had been trying to establish got stop and start pushes, killing their momentum. Not to mention Cody Rhodes (who also needed to have someone keep him in line) saw the writing on the wall and fucked off for WWE. The same thing ended up happening with the former WWE wrestlers and their stop and start pushes. If Tony had been able to control himself, and his wrestlers (or hired someone to do that for him) AEW would likely be in a much better place right now.

Excuse me if i was unclear, i was not referring to that, but to the unspoken rule where if anyone is hot dogging post match or whatever with their theme going, the microsecond they get pearl harbored the sound guy is ready to record scratch the pearl harbored fellows theme music off before they hit the mat. Except for that one time when tazz got eliminated from the 2001 RR and his theme was still playing on the PA while he was walking back

Honestly it's to recreate Thunder Rosa vs Britt Baker, with Toni Storm vs Mariah May it'll be perfect if it were the main event and would feel cinematic in a way. With Britt Baker trying to sell merch with a fucked up face like Adam Cole had decided to beat her for fucking Tony Schiavone one too many times then it didn't work.

a LOT of the problems AEW has in-ring are just extensions of the same endemic problems of the USA scene, guys take turns doing moves at each other in the correct order instead of working a match together, they try to do lucha shit without taking rolling bumps in 3-on-3 loose tag matches, the usual "I can bleed even more" shit
that's not ALL of the guys there but it's enough that it's the three-packs-a-day that got them to the stage 3 cancer through the body
you can have all the overseers in the world but if the workers don't get it they DONT get it
