I'm back. A game set in a dystopian China where most of the country is taken over by the Soviets and the half being traditionalist Chinese farmers. So Fallout: China Edition meets Metro.

With the current state of destruction physics I don't see this possible for a few more years if you want it any more in-depth than a building that splits into ten parts of just the manhattan equivalent of a set of dominos. Teardown is a decent attempt at smaller scale destruction but it still chugs doing anything large and buildings don't realistically collapse. Though if someone just got ahold of the engine for Red Faction Guerilla and upgraded it for current year you could probably make a pretty decent go.VR game that lets you destroy a city a la Rampage/Godzilla. One of the few concepts that would be very fun in the VR context.
I remember having a game like this on PC when I was a kid, I think I got it from a Scholastic order. It was a cool idea but the problem with it was that if you didn't buy your band members new gear constantly, they would have a poor mood and play shows badly on purpose. Even if you had just got them something.a guitar hero/strategy/band simulator. Just things added on to guitar hero gameplay, like story beats, the ability to recruit local musicians, and growing your band from garage level to mega arena superstars. Unexpected events like band members dying from ODs or getting poached by rival bands or groupies (like a Yoko Ono), and the ability to piece together riffs and song pieces to upload original creations. And a online mode where you perform in front of other players and they have the ability to cheer or boo you
Have you tried Outward? It's not perfect, but it fits the "indie developer that had passion for the concept" description. It's not as hand-holdy as Skyrim, there's no fast travel or objective markers and you even have to use landmarks to locate yourself on the map. But the game is designed around that, so it's always easy to figure out where you are and what's going on. Very "immersive" or something to get "absorbed into" in my opinion.I just want more companies to make Bethesda-style open world RPGs. There is nothing I get as absorbed into and yet it has been a goddamn DECADE since Skyrim. Other companies would probably improve the formula too, with Bethesda being shamefully lazy now.
Basically my dream would be a Morrowind spiritual sequel made by an indie developer that had passion for the concept and didn't need to focus on current-gen graphics. Throwback to Morrowind's low-poly look, or even something simpler and more stylized. Playing the game Barony made me wish it had the same kind of systems but in a open-world style rather than a roguelike.
You raise a really good point. I had forgotten about that game - Red Faction Guerilla had some awesome destruction physics. With the current state of destruction physics I don't see this possible for a few more years if you want it any more in-depth than a building that splits into ten parts of just the manhattan equivalent of a set of dominos. You know what could be decent? And this will be an unpopular opinion, but a sniper walking simulator could be cool. Hide, survive, hunt, trek - one shot, one kill.I wish the Sniper Elite series had continued to be a Cold War series like it was for the original game. Yes, it took place as WW2 was ending, but most of the time you fought NKVD Russians, and Germans much less often. After they did the V2 semi remake, it became just another Nazi killing game, leading to even dumber shit like their Nazi Zombie Army or whatever its called series.
Sniper Elite 4 did do some nice things with the bullet physics, seeing that engine on a Cold War game (Korea?) would stand out and bring the series back to its roots.
