According to The Quartering, Tim is just the latest of Kuntaku's rats leaving the sinking ship ever since the "NO POLITICS, ONLY SPORTS!" decree came down on Deadspin by Gawker Inc.'s new owners.

I suspect Schrier was told, "NO POLITICS, ONLY GAMES!", and this led to many of the speds leaving because they no longer allowed to spew their autism, make every game about ORANGE MAN BAD, and spread their deviancy about which video game characters they want to fuck (looking at you, Patricia!)

Also according to Jason Schrier - with October 29th being the day that the Deadspin editor got fired over the "NO POLITICS" decree.

I don't know Tim Rogers, would anyone call him talented? I took a quick peek and all I can see is a litany of garbage.

LOL. I know Schrier is being his usual sarcastic ass self, but anyone else would be trying to fucking keep their staff on and adhere to the new editorial mandate instead of pointing out how much he doesn't like it.

If you hate it so fucking much, Jason, why don't you just leave? At least your employees are sticking to their guns and leaving rather than work under an aegis they disagree with. This is made even worse by the fact that out of all the Kuntaku staff, Jason is the only one that could easily get another job in legitimate journalism.

I guess Jason realizes that the site is fucked anyway, and the faster all the rats bail, the sooner he can jump on a lifeboat and get the hell away from the Titanic.

Have I said today how much I fucking hate Jason Schreier? I guess I have now. How is someone this worthless still at a media outlet that, at last look, appeared to be trying to shed ballast?

is there a good game journalist
You're going to have to read old issues of EGM, PSM, Ultra game Platers, and PC gamer to see some.

In japan it's a different story, they will break out spreadsheets to show a game's failing Also they care about characters being visually appealing and will critique that quite thoroughly.

Since I'm in that field now, I'm not going to be vain enough to say I am. Second I do that, I've already proven I'm terrible.

However, I will say if you like what I write and don't think I'm full of crap, that I've at least done the bare minimum, but even that's subjective, and I won't pat myself on the back for that. Whether I or anyone else in that field are good is squarely in the eye of the beholder.

It’s depressing to see that HG101 has fully transitioned into a wokehive. Seems like all the sites that would feature semi-competent games writing with attached forums eventually wind up letting the vampires in and collapsing under the weight of social justice fart huffing.

Does Frank CifaldI/TheRedEye count? I‘m not sure if he even does journo stuff anymore, I haven’t seen anything by him in a few years. His old stuff is great though, especially his long writeup on Acclaim from when they shut down and liquidated and he visited the offices while they were clearing out.

IIRC, they tried jump in on the "walking simulators like Gone Home are ARRRRRRTTTTTT!" bandwagon a few years AFTER gamergate, and got butthurt when people in the forums called them lazy trash.

The thing with Jason is that the guy writes and sounds like that one poindexter kid in school who never shuts the fuck up. Kinda realized it in BunnyHop's puff peice about him, but Jason just does not have the voice for video nor the face really, guess thats why he mainly sticks to writing at kotaku.
Games journalism is dying because no "gamer" actually gives a fuck. You will see places like KotakuInAction bitch and moan about Polygon and company but none of them are willing to wait the few days to get their news from the "good" gaming sites. The "good" gaming sites all being too incompetent to get press releases or review copies so by the time they put out content it is old news. This is to say nothing of places like NicheGamer getting accused of plagiarism or OneAngryGamer wanting to gas the Jews. In the end, "normies" go to the established gaming sites because the "gamers" lack the ability or motivation to properly build an alternative. See ExclusivelyGames if you need further evidence of idiots supporting something without thinking why that might be a bad idea.
I would argue that even "normies" don't use that shit at this point, alot of the content on kotaku or polygon just can be found by some youtuber doing shit independently
Shitty click bait lists, watch any "10 ten video games with ______", Reviews, alot of influencers have access to early access to the hotest games nowadays and are included in press events, News channels, that one is over saturated by youtube alone.
sorta like how "TV killed the radio star", except it's "Streamers killed the HTML star."

Tim Rogers made interesting stuff and I hope he continues, be it on games or videos. On the other hand, Schreier's fucking "WOW I can't IMAGINE why SOMEONE would LEAVE Kotaku.............." schtick makes him look like a spineless dick. If it's so bad and so problematic, why are you still there making content and lining their pockets, dipshit?

Steve Burns of Videogamer UK tweeted "Kill all games journalists" shortly before exiting the industry to work elsewhere.

Frank went crazy. He started a jihad against THQ for their 8chan AMA, begging the console companies to revoke their ability to publish games on their platforms.

I liked Kieron Gillen's work back in the day - he clearly hated his job and channeled that into the writing - but he's gone all weird since getting into comics.

No mention of Framerater? He isn't a journalist, more of a game historian. Highly recommend the 3DO video. Just make sure you have 59 minutes to spare. Best part is when he gets to thehomebrew scene. Was pretty surprised it had one.

He also did a video about Xbox emulation. He's been doing mini reviews of every game on various obscure consoles as of late. Mostly Atari's post 2600 stuff. Pretty nice as background noise.

Schreier is fine when he is fed information, but insufferable when he's allowed to gives his own thoughts. Dumbass thought the Sorceress in Dragon's Crown was lolibait. The elf is right there, tardlet. At least labeling the elf that makes some sense. His outrage over tig ol bitties should have made him a laughingstock.

Edit: Think this thread linked to the 3DO video. Oh well, still keeping the sperging about some guy playing ancient games.

Wait youve become a Journo.... By chance would you be so kind as to share with us some of the... juicy details of the inner workings of that industry?

I work for ChristCenteredGamer, it's kinda an outlier because it's a Christian religious non-profit (officially registered as a ministry) thus not connected to the bigger secular rags, but I can share details on how they do things for reasons of transparency.

1. Game developers choose to send CCG review keys and game copies. Atlus in particular was kind enough to gift us stuff to review for quite some time and still do, but some other companies it's kinda up in the air. Square-Enix kicks a review copy or two our way once in a blue moon, but only when they care to, we otherwise have to request it, and they've ignored most requests.

We also have NO quid pro quo with game reviews. They'll send it to us to review, but we make clear up front we'll review it honestly, without any partially, and our review process is open to all reviewers, so we peer review each other for bias.

2. Most of CCG is volunteer staff, meaning we literally do it for free. The most we get is free games to review, but to keep us honest we have to sign a contract saying we will review a game in a certain amount of time or we will have to reimburse CCG the cost of the game in full. We do have some paid reviewers, but being a non-profit, it doesn't pay that much.

3. On top of actual big name devs, we also get review keys via Steam's Curator where anyone and everyone can send us review keys, and we've often had to decline reviews for porn only games (which we do not review for reasons of policy) and games which have no censored ports. I was once assigned "How to Raise a Wolf Girl" by Sekai Project once because it was on our PC review key list and we needed to get it done ASAP and I was available, but I only was able to review the censored version because we don't review uncensored works with pornographic content, again for policy reasons.

Some fun insider facts: We have gotten obvious troll devs sending us terrible asset flips and games so obviously filled with porn that we've had to abruptly decline because some people think it's funny to troll a Christian oriented games reviewer by sending us that sort of thing. We mostly roll our eyes, decline the troll game review keys, and move on.

4. Back when there was that big leak of game reviewers, my bosses admitted had they attended, their information would've been leaked (and they wouldn't have been overly concerned, they don't bother to hide their IRL names). By default, while you CAN write under a psuedonym for CCG, we are encouraged to write under our real names, which I elected to do because I have nothing to hide and you can use writing for CCG as work experience on an actual resume, and that's easier to do under your real name.

While efforts are made to protect the privacy of those who choose to write under aliases, anyone who shows up to a public CCG event (we occasionally have our own table at some gaming events and expos) pretty much agrees to let the world know who they are by default.

5. We do have a policy when it comes to moonlighting for more than one journalism outfit, as a few of us have done. If we review a game for CCG, we generally make clear in some manner to both CCG staff and the staff of whatever other outlet we reviewed it for CCG first (or vice-versa) so we don't get accused of plagiarism, especially if we use parts of the review for one site for another (and if we do, we try to note that)

6. It was instituted shortly after my signing on to CCG's writing team, but we do have a Discord with a "#reviewers-only" channel. It's for more rapid communication by the review team on various reviews and where we get told by the bosses which reviews are priorities (review key games from developers get priority all the time and sometimes we have tight deadlines to get them out) to get shaped up for release.

Our forum has a review section where we present the working drafts of our prospective reviews and get peer reviewed for mistakes and other criticism. After we polish it up to address all that, the reviews are eventually added to our site after CCG's staff decided it should go live. We can edit reviews after publication, but if it's something more than a minor typo correction, we are expected to leave notice in the review if correcting a serious mistake and why.

7. Finally, CCG, is, as I mentioned, a Christian oriented games reviewer, but you DON'T have to be one to write for them. However, you are expected to be tolerant of Christians and respectful of their beliefs while on the forum or Discord, and in any official capacity, you are NOT to come off badly in a way that would embarrass your place of employment.

This generally means that if you are responding to review criticism after publication or otherwise speaking for CCG, you don't act like an anti-Christian heathen, but off the clock, they don't care less what you do.
