KIA has a very strange ideology. They complain all day about things like that line, but they don't want the people they're complaining to to actually listen to their complaints because that would be censorship. But if the people they're complaining to don't listen to their complaints, then they're bad devs who don't listen to their customers.

Thing is, Beamdog got themselves into this mess being assholes overtly proud they injected their politics into a beloved game franchise and wrote cringeworthy dialogue. What would have been preferred to the backpedaling they are doing would have been for Beamdog to continue to stand behind their work while still admitting it was bad and all future work written after keeping their earlier mistakes in mind.

What Beamdog is doing now is more craven from KIA's perspective: They aren't admitting they were wrong, they are just undoing some of the most incendiary crap while keeping the majority intact so they recoup a little reputation from this and hopefully make a few more sales if they make efforts to appear like they aren't dickheads.

It's cynical damage control, and given how Beamdog only capitulated when they realized all the crap they were throwing on the fire was only feeding it instead of neutralizing the problem, now they are hoping to throw a few scraps of meat at the wolves who had every reason to want to rip their throats out while not apologizing for taunting the wolves in the first place.

To be honest, the whole thing was a massive Streisand Effect in action. With people like Dee being a complete idiot by enacting heavy handed censorship and claiming completely unfounded statements such as "Gamergate is organizing to downvote us!" when it was clearly untrue.

All it did was make anyone confused or angry seek out Kotaku In Action, read the comments and go "Huh, alright. I'll sign up to that."

The end result is another 3,000 subscribers to Kotaku In Action, and basically pissing off the DnD crowd. Ideally you don't want to do that as those guys tend to have money.

You know, I find myself questioning the functioning sanity of those on the SJW side and the lack of realization that continuously pushing people into the pit (as they increasingly do in their self-declared culture-war) of KiA/Gamergate Movement is counter intuitive.

As would be authoritarians they seem to fundamentally lack the basic tenant of empire building: Divide and Rule.

They seem to have the propaganda war element down fairly pat but they are unable to capitalize on this advantage time and time again as increasingly, they lose ground and previous allies find their reach extended too far.

Indeed, it seems that the crowd relies on the increasingly debunked idea that "if 100 people actually complained, then 10,000 felt the same way".

Seems like a difficult balance to keep. Basic capitalism (another thing that KIA likes to promote) would cause developers to censor themselves from outrage even if no one asks for it. I'm not sure what KIA's expectations are. They can't seem to make up their minds about whether or not they want devs to listen to them.

Good point, but in this case, they were really divided since they don't like to advocate for a game to be removed for pissing them off. On the other hand, Beamdog desecrated a beloved franchise to shill their SJW bullshit into it, so I think you can see where they were of two minds on this one.

Here's how devs should handle any of these "controversies":

1. Have a vote of whether the "problematic" material should be removed.
2. Remove or keep based on the vote.
3. Offer a mod/choice in options that implements the unpopular version.

Somehow, I don't think the SJW option would win, but who knows? Whoever loses, they still have the choice to play the version they want. People still complaining are just exposing themselves as assholes for trying to dictate other people's game experiences.
Or,
1. Hire a competent writer, that knows how not to shove political and social ideas directly into the players face.

Just an idea from the top of my head:
What about a side story where a NPC or one of the party members wants change his gender? At first you need to talk that information out of that character, because he is scared what people might think, then look for a way to help him. Finally you get a quest, where you have to deliberately trick a witch, who is known for cursing men into women, if she sees them treating women with disrespect.

You try to set up a little scene where the one guy wanting to be cursed poses as the abusive husband. But... all of the female party members are not able to take the female part: One can't act at all, the other one refuses because she thinks it is too dangerous and the third one get's sick right before you want to trick the witch. Finally one of the male party members has to play the female part, but the witch - not being fooled so easily - curses the wrong one and calls you an idiot because: 'You could have just asked.'. Finally you have to do some errant (giving a lord who abuses his spouse what he deserves) for the miffed witch, before she gets the right one cursed and the other one un-cursed. Everything is well and they live happily ever after.

If you do this well, you can play that funny and straight (ha-ha) at the same time.

And just now you probably put more effort into introducing a transgender character in a high fantasy setting than anyone involved with making the game.

Someone over on KiA even provided a pretty good plot in which the whole thing was shoved down their throats for political purposes and it still didn't suck.

The female character you'd play would get weird/rude responses from so many NPCs and such, with no real explanation while you went about doing errands. Then your husband would be kidnapped or locked up on completely falsified charges.

You'd try to get help but the townsfolk would round on you, spitting and beating you and misgendering you for being a freak and that your husband was no good for 'marrying' you.

This would push you into joining the Underground Resistence (which is highly meritocratic/doesn't give a shit) fighting against the corrupt king and the regime that slighted/persecuted those slightly different.

Lol @ the old man butt on second 22

Ok. I will risk a powerlevel. I'm fat. I cheerfully admit it because most of my thin relatives were perpetually miserable bastards while I was and am fat and happy.

I am highly offended and triggered at this anti fat crusade continues in video games, and demand instant representation in vidya and for all developers to bow to my every last whim no matter how batshit insane.

I shall now make an entire career off of this one thing, pigeon-holing me for all eternity not as a human being but as a Feminist fat person.

I shall call the show Feminine Fattist Frequency.

Plz donate to my gofundme, indiegogo, Kickstarter and Patreon at the same time as for some reason me talking in front of a screen that I've already shot requires at least $400,000.
haha no one curr

I dont really know where to put this but, hell men, all the happening about SocialAutopsy, that goddamn thing is beyond retarded, i dont know where to begin it, @Jaimas can explain it better than me but heck we are talking about some kind of super blacklist for bullies and super in the kind of "we are going to add MINORS to the list if they trigger me" not even here we mess with minors
