So, I've been keeping an ear to this one since it was "the Quinnspiracy" and it has kind of been a long ride ever since (more than a month, actually). I think right now, I'm pretty much sold on the fact that the current state of the industry and the people running it is/are crap, and there needs to be a change with regard to how we hold game journalists to ethical standards, but I'm still not convinced that #GamerGate is not at least in part set on eliminating opinions in game journalism that they don't agree with.

I've found that a lot of them will try to deny this, at least until they're pressed about it, and then they admit that they feel that they no longer want their games to be "politicized". From the beginning, this whole movement has been moved by an undercurrent of blind, seething hatred for SJWs. Now, considering the behavior of a lot of SJWs, it's perfectly understandable, but it's not very good for when you need to look at something fairly and rationally.

I don't know. I feel like if #GamerGate gets their way and shuts down Kotaku, et al, it's just going to be the reverse of what we had. Anyone who dares ask for more female representation will just be shouted down, or if a journalist writes about it there's going to be a witch hunt, and they'll dig up whatever dirt they can find to use against them to get them fired or even just get the whole website shut down like they're doing now.

I don't want Kotaku to go under I just want some arses to get fired. Also, there are a fuck ton of opinions I disagree with in gaming but they tend to at least be about games and not backed up by bullshit research. I don't want to eliminate people who disagree with me I want to get rid of corrupt fuckers.

You realise that whatever these people say about social justice and feminism they supported Quinn in destroying TFYC right?

Who are you talking about specifically?

Who are you talking about specifically?

This giant pile of degenerate journalists. But specifically Chloi Rad and all of the other journalists who refused to listen to or publish the horrendous harassment of TFYC. They made it known within their circle that Quinn didn't like these people so they should not be supported.

If you are considering a wider view of feminist gaming bloggers then I am still to see a single one that does not distort research to fit their political agenda. I also get rather annoyed by people who go around telling me what I should be offended by.

You know this thing is now spreading into the nongamer conciousness I got asked by a friends Girlfriend about this who is most definitely a non gamer.
The problem is the telling of it being lead by people like Zoe Quinn, and the telling of it is as you would expect very distorted from the truth I think that need's to be nipped in the bud before it's allowed to go any further and the reality distortion field kicks in.

I don't think I've seen any of them outright support Zoe's stance on TFYC, so if they did it's news to me, but not covering the jam in the first place was a bit of a double standard on their part. I'm sure they rationalized the decision in their mind somehow.

Who is telling you what you should be offended by, though?

I think the problem is that the story begins with Zoe period. Zoe was the catalyst for this whether #GamerGate likes it or not, and they can say that she was just the "straw that broke the camel's back" and nothing more all day, but usually when a straw breaks a camel's back, the rest of the hay bale comes down with it. And yet, where is the infamous Dorito Pope of a few years back? The infamous example of everything that was wrong with gaming journalism? I'll tell you this: IGN isn't on the list of websites that people are trying to take down. Hell, the list is called "Operation Disrespectful Nod" for Christ's sake, a direct reference to Zoe and what her friend said to her.

The only time I've ever seen anyone of note in the GG movement mention IGN or Geoff Keighley is InternetAristocrat... at the end of his "White Castles and Ivory Towers" video where he says that Geoff looks GOOD by comparison.

Actions are more important to me than words and they did shut down all reporting of TYFC's harassment and their Jam in general. Their interaction with Chloi apparently went as follows:

TFYC said:
We approached a journalist and got a response for Chloi Rad at Indiestatik, who liked the project and did an interview. Upon her arrival at the GDC, we assumed she would publish the article. We contacted her at GDC when we were having more Twitter problems with another user, asking when she was going to publish the article. She said she would talk to Zoe Quinn while she was at GDC. Chloi Rad did not get back us for about a week. We were doing an AMA on Reddit, which included drawings, and we did a drawing of Chloi as a means of getting her attention. Chloi asked us to immediately remove her name/picture from the AMA and explained that Zoe had told her that the project was highly exploitative and that we were transphobic. She made it clear she didn’t want to be associated with us. All the issues Zoe had with the project were addressed in the interview but Chloi never published the article.

No research just Zoe's opinion. And we now know that the pros email list were all backing Quinn in general so how incredibly hard must it have been for TFYC to get any journalist to come near them.

I'm sure you're well aware that feminists like Sommers are few and far between. The majority of "feminists" who talk about gaming are SJWs and will happily tell me that I'm "brainwashed by the patriarchy" or that I have "internalised misogyny". If you know of any, other than Sommers, who aren't SJWs and have an interesting point to make about gaming then please let me know. I'd be really interested to see what they write.

IGN just didn't get mentioned in this particular debacle until now because they weren't as close to Quinn herself and the specific issues surrounding TFYC, Rebel Jam, Patreon etc. Milo is also releasing emails in chunks to keep the story alive longer but we're getting there. IGN contributors, journos and even an editor were on the GJPs list.

From the GameJournoPros list:

Alex Rubens - IGN, G4TV, PCWorld, Official Xbox Magazine, Polygon, @Gamer Magazine, Games Radar, Joystiq, Kotaku, Destructoid, Tech Hive, Game Informer
Brandon Justice - Ex Gamefan, IGN, SEGA, EA & EGM
Dan (Dan Stapleton) - IGN, PC Gamer
Jason Venter - Honest Gamers Editor in Chief, IGN, Gamespot, GamesRadar, Joystiq
Meghan - IGN
Mitch Dyer - Editor, IGN
Rob Zacny - PCGamesN, The Escapist, Polygon, IGN
Taylor Cocke - Web content coordinator at Riot Games/Lolesports, but widely written at IGN, Edge, and others.

If IGN has been doing more fucked up shit it will come out. I believe Milo is currently investigating Silverstring and another company. He's only one journo against many, many others and the mainstream media is busy with Emma Watson atm.

I don't really get this 'gamergate' thing. I'll confess, I haven't exactly been paying much attention, but I still fail to see how anyone could be so heavily invested in the ethics of 'gaming journalism' (which, lets face it, is pretty irrelevant; and I say this as someone who plays video games on and off) that they would send bloody death threats. Sure, she may or may not have cheated on her boyfriend. That's between them and God. Lots of other, bigger celebrities and politicians have done much, much worse, and never received death threats. Just my two cents on the thing.

Personally I don't really care about gaming journalism. I'm bothered by the fact that the SJWs, the type of people who think dressing up as a hotdog is racist, control it. The fact that they have a stranglehold on American media is terrifying. If they aren't stopped soon, they'll spread like cancer.

...and apparently, the term 'social justice warrior' can't be used to refer to one's opponent because 'social justice' has been a thing since long ago.

I suggest we continue to use it. A lot. The first page of results for "social justice warrior" are extremely negative on Google. This is why they've recently been trying to claim "SJW is just a word people use when they disagree with you". You know, kind of like what they do with the words "misogynist" and "racist".

Its a shame really. I mean, I'd gladly fight for Social Justice... but I'll be damned if I would consider myself a Social Justice Warrior.

Okay, its like this. I am both Pro-Choice and Pro-Life! I support people being able to have choices, and I support life! ... But the terms dont mean that, do they? They are about abortion.

Regarding getting the #GamerGate's side into the mainstream media:

What if the story didn't touch upon Zoe and harassment, but started with readers leaving sites like Kotaku because the writers insulted their readerbase? Would that work?

In a country where George W. Bush got elected, I'm pretty sure SJWs are impotent.

Not really because that isn't the point. We all know they're arseholes but they don't get called out on their corruption. #GG is supposed to be about the money, sex, favours etc. that have been changing hands and how competing journalists collaborated on what would and would not be reported.

I've started following a couple of these guys on twitter, at first because they were funny but now because I think it's actually a really great way to fuck with sites like Kotaku and Polygon. They "spoil" clickbait articles by putting the relevant information in twitter posts, like youtube links or release dates. This is nowhere near exhaustive, just the ones I'm following.

There's also donotlink.com -I'm a member on a different website that uses it frequently, especially when discussing breitbart.com.

I still can't believe sites like IGN think 'this is when a review will be up' is fucking news.

That's hilarious though.

"Another comic complains that anyone who attacks Quinn is accused of misogyny, while simultaneously being a comic in which a cartoon Quinn has sex with five game sites. "

Cracked.com - "What the fuck is a joke?"

seriously i though cracked was supposed to be one of those edgy humor sites that tells college kids who are too afraid of reddit what wacky things are making internet rounds lately. but they can't see that the entire point of the comic was that quinn was obviously having sex with journalists while everyone who criticized her was labelled a backwards prick?

like, the text above the image that said "i just wanted to have fun and suck some cocks but i'm honestly feeling SO ATTACKED RIGHT NOW!" was too subtle for you?
