Turkey is definitely one of the bad surprises or probably even the bad surprise. They had a decent run at the last Euro Cup here in Germany. Now I don't really follow the Turkish national team bc not a Turk but my impression before the WC wasn't that their squad had lost in quality. It seemed a lot of people had the Turks as their dark horse pic.

I'll give my shit takes, even though we aren't even 2 games in quite yet for every team:
  • Turkey stinks. They've played better, as mentioned above.
  • Germany's coach will probably sink them. Leroy Sane is terrible but continues to start, to the point a mix of Germans and Canadians were booing Sane on the pitch during the game in Toronto yesterday. But hey, they made it to the knockouts (winning the group). Also, Undav is incredible, great story. A goal contribution every 11 minutes is insane.
  • I don't read too much into some of the early draws from the likes of Spain, Brazil, and Netherlands. They've responded, but it could be indicative of problems in cohesion, or it could just be cobwebs. The Dutch, in particular, looked angry yesterday.
  • Canada is having their best World Cup but still kinda stink. Mexico is looking better than they have in a while. USA... I don't want to homer, but they've been surprisingly good so far.
  • Kind of flat performances from South American teams, outside of Colombia and Argentina.
  • Ditto for Africa, outside of Morocco maybe.
  • Looking forward to France v Norway.
  • Japan looking strong.
  • England will go as far as Harry Kane and Tuchel can carry them. If Tuchel can get that group of prima donnas to actually be motivated, they could prove interesting.
The biggest winners have been some historic goal-keeping by small countries' keepers. A lot has been said about the field of 48, but some of the weakest teams on paper, have garnered their first point (in some cases, ever) out of the competition.

Honestly, the biggest winner might be the MLS. The elevated profile of football(/soccer) in the USA is crossing cultural boundaries - even none sport fans are becoming aware of the sport because of the (potentially astroturfed) good news feeds about Euros or Asians discovering America isn't just Donald Trump. If MLS can capitalize on the increased awareness... ah who am I kidding, they'll fuck it up somehow.

Edit to add: The biggest washout was clearly Italy, in not making it.

Mexico is the luckiest group winner so far. Played like shit vs South Africa and gifted two red cards, played like shit vs South Korea but gifted the stupidest goal ever by the gook keeper. I won't be surprised if a shock 3rd place team eliminates them in round of 32.

Ecuador, for having finished high up in CONMEBOL qualifying, has to rank up there with biggest disappointments. No goals in 2 games and having drawn with CURAÇAO after the Germans put 7 past them has them shitting their pants, even though Germany has nothing to play for in the last round vs them.

Europeans discovering America has been a recurring theme of this World Cup. For many young Euro's, this is the first time they've ever been in North America and apparently its blowing their minds. I dunno how much of it is real, and how much of it is just content slop for clicks. But I do appreciate the glazing. Also the story of the Scottish taking over Boston, Drinking all the beer and generally having a good time, and now the entire city is rooting for the Scottish national team? That is definitely true.

Also, the Scots have a "must win" game against Brazil. In fucking Miami, on Friday. Gonna be interesting to see how that plays out.

Surprises: The heroics of Cape Verde and Curacao, who I don't think anyone expected to get any points. Scotland getting points and New Zealand currently leading its group. They may have Haaland, but is nice to be optimistic about Norway.

Good but not all that surprising if you ask me: Japan, because this feels like more of 2022. America, they already were doing good but cranked it to refreshingly great.

Deceptive: Mexico, unconvincing wins imo on a very winnable group. I fear this may worsen what 2022 made them realise about their place on the game.

Disappointing: Both Brazil and Spain are looking mortal, I can see them going far (because of the format) but not deep. Belgium is doing even less than usual. Turkey and Ecuador are fucking dead. Group G or Group H will give the most underwhelming winners or the vantablackest of dark horses.

Its a blend of Olive oil and Buttermilk (real ranch, and not the fake shit made from Soybean Oil and Milk byproduct). And then spiked with every Italian herb you have heard of (Basil, Oregano, Garlic, Rosemary, etc). A true collision of German and Italian cookery that can only occur in America. Especially since there are no olive groves in America. Trading for the win. It was initially marketed as a salad dressing but has since transcended space and time and is now an ingredient in and of itself alongside Worstechire Sauce, Fish Sauce, Soy Sauce etc. Ranch is essentially "the" American Sauce that goes in a shit ton of recipes. Still works good as a salad dressing though. And by itself as a condiment.

The deep lore is that the Ranch herb mix is a standard case package for restaurants in the USA. All commercial stores that make their own ranch know the olive oil and buttermilk blend. They then add the herb packets provided by Sysco or whoever. Its why ranch dressing in restaurants always tastes better then what you buy at the store. They are following the recipe and there is no soybean oil. They also get the Buttermilk from Sysco as well,

Which is not to shit on Sysco or any other major North American food supplier. Rather, to shit on Kraft and Nestle for hawking Soybean Oil garbage as Ranch in grocery stores.

Also, Nestle is a European company. They have deliberately chosen to deny the Euros the glory of Ranch sauce. Because they think its shit. Because their version of it is shit. Sad! Many such stories when it comes to those Swiss faggots at Nestle and American foods.

Looking at the world cup I am being a bit of an America fan boy I know but it feels like they got great coaching that is fixing americas lack of star power.
I think tighter coaching and practice is the difference between 2-0 against Australia and 2-2 with Cabo Verde and Uruguay. Also absolute Kino moments with Belgium getting humiliated by Iran being forced to a tie.
Any time Belgium loses is a good day for sports.
