This year’s Anthro New England theme is the Old West/western movies, but wearing anything even slightly western-themed will get you in trouble for “appropriation.” That means no hats, weapons, ropes, or anything connected to Native American culture.

If they’re not going to let anyone actually roleplay the theme and only allow a narrowly defined niche that cuts out most of the aesthetic, it raises the bigger question: why even bother with the western theme in the first place?

They probably are expecting everyone to be dressed as Woody from Toy Story. The Rave will be playing nothing but Johnny Cash's entire discography. All the stuff in the dealer's den will be related to Horses. And if anyone mentioned in this forum attends, they will forever be referred to as a "Lolcowboy".

As a side note, there's been no news on the convention that was supposedly open to Native American culture (amongst other BIPOC), Harvest Moon Howl Fest (or whatever they renamed it to).

i wouldn't put it past some people to intentionally put themslves in situation where they have an excuse to get mad
it would've been safer to make the theme something that doesn't have so much room for offending people, but picking a controversial topic lets them play hall monitor more

ANE doesn't let you wear collars and leashes. It's the most standard furry/fursuit accessory but you can't wear it until 8:30 pm. I get it has a kink connotation but they allow pup hoods/men in pretty tight clothing etc. Then again, the people that run it are a bunch of histrionic Karen trannies so it not much of a surprised they look for ways to be pissy about things.

I didn't know anyone even dressed up for con theming, amazing it's that big a worry.

Maybe don't pick a theme that can easily draw offense? It'd be like theming a con for "American south in the 1800s" and getting mad when someone comes as a pickaninny.
