How is Bottom Bottas still in F1?

Given a long contract by Alfa, think it runs out end of 2025.

At the time wasn't a bad move from Alfa who lost Kimi to retirement and Gio wasn't kept on. A reliable if not great, experienced driver when no others were really on the market. Zhou is either quite good for a pay driver or Bottas is having a Ricciardo moment.

Contracts mean nothing in F1. Can definitely see Alfa getting rid of him and getting Pourchaire.

If they don't get pourchaire in the seat next season they seriously risk getting Piastried by another team. AT have 2 seats they could toss someone out of and slot him into and I'm sure others would grab him too.

I still suspect silly season will start with someone getting Checo's seat. Let's face it there isn't a driver there who wouldn't answer "what contract" if Helmut came asking about their current contract break terms.

Who would Helmut call up to replace Checo? This time last year I wouldn't have rated Ricciardo as getting a second bite at F1. However Alonso's strong showing makes me think that perhaps 34 isn't too old to make an F1 comeback. It also helps that he's RBR's reserve driver.

Whilst I'd be sad if Checo was yeeted from F1, having Danny Ric back on the grid would make it far less painful.

Alright here's what I think will happen:

They will get rid of De Vries at Alpha Tauri after the summer break, and have Riccardo take that seat. Then it's a fight for Perez' seat at RBR between Ricc and Tsunoda till the end of 2023. The winner takes the RBR seat for 2024.

Boring answer Tsunoda.

There's talk of Ricciardo or Lawson replacing Nyck after the summer break, if that happens they might get it.

Lewis is out of contract this year, if he doesn't show interest that'll say a lot since he can use it as leverage with Merc.

Albon is probably the cheapest to pay off a contract.

Norris' agent was seen talking to Marko last race.

There has been talk of Alex Palou going to AT next year, might skip that and go straight to RB.

There are plenty of names around they could go for Checko's seat.

Sainz started off in the red bull program and was team mates with Max in the Torro Rosso days and is getting shafted at ferrari week in week out.

Norris might be doable, strong driver and already has a bromamce with Max.
Albon is going well but definitely struggled last time in that car.

Hulk is doing great with that Haas, and would be a great number 2 who can deliver but also know his place.

Bottas has already played the number 2 role while delivering strong results and Alfa Sauber have a decision to make soon regarding Theo and it ain't going to be China money that gets moved out the way.

In this scenario, Ricc would have to be the favourite for an RBR drive in '24. Tsunoda hasn't exactly set the sport alight since he joined AT, and it's only been a few months since Ricc last drove in an F1 race.
Hulk is doing great with that Haas, and would be a great number 2 who can deliver but also know his place.
There's a point. Assuming one or both Haas drivers move on at the end of 2023, what are the chances of Checo ending up there? On one hand it'd be a major downgrade. But on the other hand, he might enjoy the challenge of getting as much as he can out of an inferior car, much like how Alonso and Albon have been able to put up some solid performances in their respective whips this year.

Checo can bring some of Carlos Slim's cash with him, too.

Checo's drop-off in performance has been so pronounced, I can't believe that it is entirely the result of a contractual clause that allows Verstappen to peel off his racing overalls and lash him with a riding crop for the duration of the Belgium National Anthem.

I've a feeling this is going to be one of those occasions when, years later, you read in someone's biography about behind the scenes shenanigans.

Hopefully true, I don't see the reason why Dutch media would like to say a dutchie is sacked.

The news of Ricciardo's impending return to F1 has just hit Australia.

A new report has revealed F1 icon Daniel Ricciardo is set for an immediate return to the Formula One grid, just six months after his unceremonious exit.

On Tuesday, Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reported Ricciardo, 34, is set to replace Dutch driver Nyck De Vries at Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri for the rest of the season, starting at the Hungary GP on July 23.

De Vries, 28, has driven just 10 races for AlphaTauri and is being axed because of poor performance, according to the outlet. His best result was 12th place in Monaco.

Aussie star driver Ricciardo, meanwhile, will return to the grid in a matter of days after a six-month absence that began when his contract with McLaren was terminated early.

After his shock exit, Ricciardo rejoined the Red Bull team as a reserve driver.

Rumours have swirled since he rejoined the garage of him returning behind the wheel as Max Verstappen’s teammate.

The pressure has only amplified on Red Bull No. 2 Sergio Perez who failed to deliver in qualifying for the fifth straight race during the British Grand Prix.

But it appears Red Bull boss Helmut Marko will stick with Perez in the main outfit, while allowing Ricciardo a chance to impress at AlphaTauri.

After the British GP, Ricciardo got his first chance to show that he still has what it takes when he drove the RB19 in a tyre test around the Silverstone track.

It marked the first time Ricciardo was in a Red Bull on track since he rejoined the team after his contract was torn up by McLaren.

While it was listed as being a tyre test, the three day drive means far more to the Aussie and those within the Red Bull team.

Team principal Christian Horner said the testing will give the team valuable insight into exactly where the 34-year-old is at.

“It’s an important test for Pirelli, but it’s also going to be great seeing him back in a Red Bull car and seeing him where he’s at, both on pace and mentally, physically and to get his feedback on this car as well,” Horner said at Silverstone.

“So I think it’s a good opportunity for him to get back behind a wheel of a car that’s just won the British Grand Prix.”

Ricciardo opted to take a year off from the grid as he wasn’t interested in joining a middle of the pack team — but that stance seems to have wavered now.

The news spells disaster for rookie De Vries, who failed to make an impact and was reportedly given a four-race time frame to perform by Marko.

The move to join AlphaTauri could place even more weight on Ricciardo eventually rejoining Red Bull and partnering with Verstappen.

Perez has struggled to keep up with his superstar teammate with multiple qualifying mishaps hampering his race day efforts. His contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 season.

It could all lead towards a dream 2025 scenario for the Perth native.

“I’ve had enough of a break now where I’ve got ants in my pants, in a positive way,” he told SpeedCity Broadcasting on Sunday about his impending return to the cockpit for the test.

“I’m letting it all happen as it comes, and I have confidence I’ll be back on the grid at some point.

“Obviously I’m not 100 per cent sure of it, but I’m confident it will happen again one day.”

SCUDERIA ALPHATAURI WELCOMES BACK DANIEL RICCIARDO

11 July 2023

Scuderia AlphaTauri announces that Daniel Ricciardo will be joining the team on loan from Oracle Red Bull Racing for the remainder of the Formula 1 season, starting from the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Daniel back into the team,” commented Franz Tost, Scuderia AlphaTauri Team Principal. “There’s no doubt about his driving skills, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straight forward. The team will also profit a lot from his experience, as he is an eight-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner. I would like to thank Nyck for his valuable contribution during his time with Scuderia AlphaTauri and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Daniel Ricciardo said: “I’m stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!”

We all knew Nyck was shockingly bad and I have no idea how Red Bull didn't. I predicted somewhere much earlier in the thread he wouldn't stay the full season and here we are.

I hope DTS have Nyck on and ask him about his cocky "I'm going to lead this team" nonsense last season (along with the DTS people bowing down to Yuki for their disrespect).

The F1 twitter world is being utterly insufferable about it of course. Nick is apparently amazing (toto said so) it's all red bull's fault and it's a toxic work environment that Nyck should sue them for.

No surprise wet race podium for you, Dutchman.

I've a feeling that, if they had left a barrier section open on one of the circuits, De Vries would have eventually slipped through the gap, and continued onward, oblivious to the change in surface conditions, as a feral F1 driver.

Wasn't Ricciardio offered the AT seat before they signed Devries?

Did he need to be re-taught how to drive by Redbull and their simulator, before taking the AT seat?

Why didn't he just take the AT drive in the first place?

He didn't want to "just make up numbers" and wanted to drive for a team that could win. 6 months out really changed his perspective on that (plus perez's current performance kinda lends hope for better next year if he can show off in that AT).

Almost certain Lawson is getting in the AT next season so someone is making way. I recon if he wasn't on for the super formula championship he'd be the one getting the call up.

He viewed it as beneath him and it took him a while to realize that it was the only avenue for him to get back into F1.

I'm obviously biased, but I think that would be career suicide. Sure, he'd have the top car to race in, but he'd be going into a team that's completely built around Max. I don't believe Horner or Marko would ever benefit him over Max. I mean, look at Ferrari. They're so focused on Leclerk that they always screw over Sainz, even when he's being clearly superior.

They're checking him out. This is Perez's warning. If he's able to keep up with Tsunoda, he'll be at RB next year. He'll be the perfect number 2 to Max.

Also, what the fuck is wrong with Gasly? That prick has been getting on my nerves for several years now, always raging as if his own shit doesn't stink. His latest "moment" with Sainz after the race is really pathetic, especially when Stroll was the one he should be angry at. He's perhaps the biggest asshole I've seen in the sport.
