I held off watching race live as I hung out at my daughter's this afternoon and her fiance and I watched it together.
I was amazed at the spread between cars, such large gaps other than the train Ham was in. I was hoping for an SC with about 15 laps left to tighten it back up. Disappointed with Mag falling off, was hoping he'd keep in top 6. Bottas should have had that podium if it wasn't for the pit stop issue. That would have been great as an additional smackdown on Merc/Ham. It was amazing watching how shit he was in this race. So much for master of rain. He couldn't pass shit cars with mediocre drivers. A couple more races like that and he will be lucky to finish top 10 in the standings.
George certainly looked great and if it wasn't for him being able to deal with the bad Merc, they'd be way down in WCC standings. Still not ready to fully write them off yet though. While that wasn't a night race, it was like Australia where the temps were not what most of the races would be encountering. Miami should be much warmer and see what effect that has on the various teams. While I don't see Merc challenging top 2, warm conditions might allow them to be more solid 3rd best team. As of now I put McL a notch above them, but see if that is case when the tracks are 30+C temps.
Merc really have fallen hard though. I mean I could see them maybe being .2 or .3 behind when the year started, and expected them to claw that back. But today they were easily close to 1.5 secs behind on pace.
It was not a barnburner of a race but fairly good. However the spread between cars was just ridiculous. Like 5 to 10 secs between a lot of cars. The weather conditions for me didn't really help to sort out the competitive order much so I am hoping Miami is just straight nice warm/hot weather, no rain and no heavy wind as generally that is what we expect most races to be. So until we have one of those races, the true order is still a bit fuzzy, for me anyway. Like will AM be top 10 in Miami and Merc sucking balls again? Somehow I doubt it.
I stuck with Charles as my Turbo in both teams so that bit my ass this time. I cant remember who I all had to be honest so will be interesting to see who struck gold amongst us with this result when I check the standings later.
Just reading articles from post-race. This sounds concerning.
George Russell says the physical effects of porpoising from the new ground effect 2022 Formula 1 cars is not sustainable for drivers.
His Mercedes team have struggled with the severe bouncing phenomenon at high speeds caused by the high downforce levels generated at maximum velocity by the new floors for 2022. The W13 has been prone to porpoising to such a degree that team principal Toto Wolff revealed on Friday Russell’s car had broken a stay on its floor designed to held increase its rigidity.
The impact of the constant bouncing at high speeds is beginning to take a toll on his health, Russell says, with the phenomenon being at its most severe during today’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.
“I think when the car’s in the right window and the tyres are in the right window, the car, except for the bouncing, feels really good to drive,” said Russell after finishing fourth in Imola.
“But the bouncing really takes your breath away. It’s the most extreme I’ve ever felt it. I really hope we find a solution and I hope every team who’s struggling with the bouncing finds a solution because it is not sustainable for the drivers to continue with this level.
“This is the first weekend I’ve truly been struggling with my back. Almost like chest pains from the severity of the bouncing, but it’s just what we have to do to go get the fastest lap times out of the car.”
After his fourth consecutive top-five finish at the start of the 2022 season, with Mercedes clearly lacking performance in comparison to their rivals Red Bull and Ferrari, Russell says the team must get more out of their package if they want to continue to finish in the higher places.
“I think in terms of results, we’re definitely getting the most out of it and things have definitely fallen our way in these first four races,” said Russell.
“It gives me and I’m sure it gives the team confidence that when the car improves, we’ll be there to get even more points on the board. So, as I said before this weekend, we can’t sustain this level of these results if we don’t improve the pace of the car.”
