Lawyer up! There is a lot at stake when it comes to being a world champion, both the driver and more so the corporate interests of the team he drives for. Having worked in law for 30+ years now, if there is any opportunity to appeal a decision, most will do it! It ultimately is worth it considering the prestige and more importantly money involved to throw shit at the wall and see if anything sticks, How it affects the image of the team and the sport on the whole is an annoying side effect when it comes to them considering it. We shall see I guess!
right, but short of literally reversing the finishing positions I don't see Hamilton being crowned post-race.

Well, that didn't take long! It has begun...

I've seen a few harping on that but as far as I can see those include the "at the race directors discretion" and "if safe to do so". So I doubt that would go anywhere.

I guarantee if merc try to play lawyer over that one that red bull will challenge Silverstone, Imola and any other race where something controversial benefited Hamilton. The FIA need to try and stop the entire championship being legislated race by race in the courts otherwise the whole thing becomes a farce.
Exactly
The safety car coming out is just chance , all drivers face the same . Finishing the race under safety would not have been good for a final race to determine the F1 season. And leaving the back markers in play would have been a similar to safety car . With one lap to go Masi wanted a racing finish and Perez defended on worn tyres so the outcome between Hamilton and max with one lap racing wasn't a forgone conclusion.

Racing by lawyers isn't good and the decision. if appealed will stand. Its racing as Masi said to Toto... even if only for one lap

The best move they could have made is putting out a PR statement saying they disagree with the result but Hamilton accepts the result and congratulates Max on a had thought championship.

Makes it clear they disagree while making Hamilton look a good sport. Merc won the contractors so still get their maximum payout from the season.

Of course merc are also crying that Max overtook Hambone under the safety car (will go nowhere since it was as Hamilton was slowing, he never went fully ahead and let Hamilton back past).

Personally this comes down to a poor strategy decision by Mercedes. They had the chance to pull Hamilton in to the pits when the safety car appeared. They could have done that, come out behind Max on fresh tyres and gone for it. They knew lapped cars could be let to pass and then Max would be on Hamilton's gearbox with new tyres for a lap or two. They were gambling on the race ending behind the safety car and lost that gamble so are now pitching a fit.

In other news the "washed up and should retire" driver made the most overtakes this season followed closely by the OAPs of the grid. Still got it.

Well done boys.

Top one percent LET'S GO!!!

When Alonso retires from racing... again... he should get Masi's job.

Total make-up call at the end of the race, for screwing Max at the beginning and probably for Wolff's arrogance to them about the safety car. The stewards really had no "right answer" there, so they let them race it out for one lap. MB car had been utterly dominant all day, so it wasn't a forgone conclusion Max would win. Perez kept Hamilton behind for about a lap in a similar situation.

Absolutely insane end to a crazy season. Lewis purposely crashing out Max at 200 mph, the Spa farce, the various clashes between Max and Lewis, the steward room shitshows. At least MB finally got one of their toys taken away after getting everything they wanted for about a decade.

I'm just hoping that the new regs make for a more level and more racy field. I know that's what they had in mind, and it would be a lot better for the sport overall.

Ahhhh, I figured they might have a clause or two which would change the meaning or intention of the regulation so it wasn't so clear-cut.
I would assume that FIA has some general basic rule that the race director can deviate from the rules-as-written according to the situation and apply them differently based on circumstances.
Having rules literally set in stone means you can't adapt them to situations dynamically. Certain rules need to be as solid and unmoving as possible, some decisions must be able to adapt to a certain situation.

FIA not only wants safety, they want a decent race with a good-looking conclusion and having this race, where both title contendors went into it with the same points, end behind a safety car or ending with a hot lap with 5 lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen, is just unacceptable.

They wanted the Hollywood Ending and they got it with their decision to allow some cars to unlap themselves and get one final amazing lap between Hamilton and Verstappen.

And I really have to mention: Had Hamilton defended against Verstappen just half as well as Perez did against him, he would have won this title.
Perez, on old as fuck soft tyres, in a slower car, managed to give Hamilton a good run for his money for almost an entire lap.

Oh hohoho hoooo:

Of course merc are also crying that Max overtook Hambone under the safety car (will go nowhere since it was as Hamilton was slowing, he never went fully ahead and let Hamilton back past).
And Max managed to do this, mind you, without binning his car in his opponents gearbox, like a certain someone did last race.

In other news the "washed up and should retire" driver made the most overtakes this season followed closely by the OAPs of the grid. Still got it.
Well, as much as I love Vettel and as joyful as I am for this statistic, I think this has a lot to do with him being in the midfield, where he "overtakes" a lot of cars when they do their pitstop.
But the Aston Martin was lackluster this season, especially in the second half, and there were plenty of moments where Vettel got into a proverbial knife-fight with another car and he managed to hold his ground or gain a position. Hopefully, the AM will be more competetive next season and Vettel ends up somewhere around 5th place or so.

Love the guy, he's so wholesome, would love to see him on more podiums.

The FIA could pull a Chad move here. Uphold both protests. 5 second penalty for Max overtaking under the safety car then anounce the event null and void due to the restart procedure.

To throw another spanner in the works, turns out there is a precedent for safety car ending on the same lap as the lapped cars were let through: Brazil 2019

If you want to relive the undoubtedly best moments of this season...

Perez being a complete monster on worn tyres:

Max overtaking in the last lap, just listen to the crowd roar, the short intermezzo of Toto pissing his pants on a radio call with FIA is just icing on the cake:

And then, there's the memes...

Congratulations to @New Fag, and to all participants of the fantasy league. Can't believe my meme redbull team scraped together second place. Getting max and red bull constructors was a cheat-code (and it's silly how stingy the admins are about changing prices, going into the final race lewis was still like 8 million bucks more than max)

By the regulations specified Hamilton should have been champion and had the race won.
But Max is the champion. Won it on the track. Hamilton should have kept him behind if he so wanted it so badly.

What I hate is that I feel like this will become a recurring thing.
Because "drama" aka Mercedes and Red Bull wetting themselves for daddy FIA sells...
I pray F1 doesn't go the NASCAR route and fabricate stuff for "close finishes"
This wasn't close to Brazil 2008 because that was natural, pure sport.
Not fabricated by stupidity.

The stewards from race one have been terrible.
No consistency.
Congrats to Max on the title, it should stand but I guess F1 2021 couldn't end without another round of crying for the FIA.

Overall I don't know what to think of the season.
On one hand you have a proper title fight
But that title fight was just them two crashing everytime they saw one another and both teams crying for 20+ races.

Lewis has been poor IMO, dropped the ball many times with clumsy moves. We may be seeing him finally decline.
But I'm glad he didn't let Max win, he put up a fight for it.
The season is very much like 2006 in that you have a changing of the guard.

2022 is gonna be one interesting season after this.
