I wonder what kind of education some of these people had. I can imagine many of them weren't taught any of the reasons we knew the Earth was round even thousands of years ago. If you have a particularly lackluster education it's a lot easier to buy into a whole bunch of bullshit.

You still have to be pretty fuckin' retarded to believe in an outright conspiracy to fool people into thinking the Earth is round though. That's either pure idiocy or a really desperate attempt to sound "enlightened".

I imagine most of them just kind of had typical public school education. This isn't automatically bad, at least not for basic geography like this. It does often give people misconceptions, like the idea no one knew the Earth was round until Columbus.

It's not the quality of education, it's the peoples' lack of interest.

I just assume it's a combination of (selective) bible literalism and schizophrenia.

It's odd that it would come from that, since people in the Levant at the time of Jesus knew the Earth was round. That the mast of a ship was the first part of it to appear over the horizon was proof enough to anyone who lived by the sea and thought about it enough, and several Greek philosophers had made attempts to calculate the circumference of the Earth, to varying degrees of success.

Ah but you have to remember, secret societies have been pedaling this cover-up for literally thousands of years in the vague hope that one day they can get jewgold for it somehow.

Thats probably my favorite thing about these people. Some of them say that NASA is profiting massively from this 'hoax' because they get 19bn a year or something and because faking space flight is really cheap they get to live in palaces or some shit.

I get blocked and banned any time I ask them to show me a picture of the edge. lol

So, in years past I went to the flat earth society forums for a laugh. Around 50% of the people there are doing it just because they get a kick out of being purely contrarian, but the other half, they are fucking insane. Paranoid schizophrenics, conspiracy theories, one very particularly vehement Muslim who believed he did the will of Allah by exposing round earth lies, a few creationists, people who invented entire new primal forces to replace gravity because gravity couldn't possible be real, vacuums aren't possible, except the earth is covered in an ice dome surrounded by pure vacuum and he thinks there are other earths out there in the vacuum.

It's a trip.

Yeah, most flat-Earth ppl I've encountered - the fact they believe in flat-Earth is their most normal attribute. They spend most of their time rambling about their neighbors poisoning them or some shit.

My only beef with them is that they are fuel for extremely low-effort drop-out "debunkers" on YT.

Elaborate joke or not, it's one big, dumb melting pot of exceptionals. To put a positive spin on it, I like to think FES is there to remind us to be forever aware of Poe's Law, and to never underestimate some people's need to debate something that's been scientifically proven one way or the other. Maybe throw the importance of critical thinking in there, too?

From what I hear they are like any other community: generally nice people, but some take the joke too far (like the Farms' resident A-Logs). A good few of them are legitimate and very vocal conspiracy theorists too, so if there is a "joke", it falls flat and even the more reasonable members end up looking crazy as well.

Good concept, poor execution. I give FES a 28% on RottenTomatoes.com

They were probably the crayon eaters the teachers gave up on by 3rd grade.

A lot of FE'ers believe that not only are we on a flat earth but also that the earth has a dome over it, has water on top if it, and has water under it. Like several people have mentioned in this thread, they are putting literal meaning into what is in the bible....

Comparing it to Sponge Bob....yup..that convinces me!!

Here is some information about the supposed ice wall that is surrounding us......

And what is beyond that wall? That's the mystery. Many FE'ers think there are more continents, more life ...and this it yet one more thing the government is hiding from us....

Okay that one with other continents beyond the wall is kinda cool. Moving islands and shadow moons and shit. You could set a D&D game in that.
