People get mad at this but I think Three Houses is a good place to start for accessibility + it made so many people FE fans. Yes there is the social sim element which some people may not like but it's a pretty enjoyable first playthrough.

I've been meaning to try and get into SRPGs, is Fire Emblem a good place to start? If so, Fire Emblem GBA a good entry point? And if not, what is (FF Tactics Advance maybe)?
My only experience with the genre is Advanced Wars. I know Fire Emblem has permadeath and hero units but that's about it. Sorry for being such a tard.
Well, as a Final Fantasy Tactics sperg first, I actually would recommend starting with the PS1 game, or even the Ivalice Chronicles remaster. It's actually a bit hard to get into because it throws a few complex mechanics like CT and charging spells, but the reason why I believe it's so good as a beginner is due to how customizable you can make your party to be. It teaches you stuff like map control, team composition and when to engage the enemy very well, it's also a masterpiece of a game either way so idk, go play it lol.

As a Fire Emblem fan second, FE7 is a good beginner entry. Simple, straight to the point, there's no enemies with 500 skills and impossible to kill stats and has a somewhat engaging tutorial. Awakening is also pretty good if you can get into that, it has a lot of QoL features that modern Fire Emblem is known about, and you can grind if you find it necessary (although if you intend on playing normal mode, random battles are basically overkill lol).

Fire Emblem has a lot of good entry points so really go with whichever hardware fits you. Sacred Stones is the most beginner-friendly of the GBA games, it sets up a lot of mechanical and design concepts that became common in later FE games (overworld, optional grinding, trainee units) while carrying over most of the mechanics from older FE games and is structured in a way where you'll never be punished to hard for losing units. Path of Radiance for the Game Cube is arguably where modern FE began, it has some of the most enjoyable character writing in the series and is pretty beginner-friendly in terms of difficulty, and also has a sequel that is notoriously difficult with probably the most ambitious story (in terms of writing and gameplay mechanics) in FE history. Awakening for the 3DS is the quintessential newbie FE game, if you think you'll be overwhelmed by one of the older games or Fates it's a good place to start since it has most of the core mechanics of Fire Emblem, combines them with most of the previous games exclusive gimmicks (Sacred Stones overworld, Genealogy's child unit system, etc.), adds in a lot of modern QoL features and gives you the option to turn off permadeath.

That said, I would not recommend starting with Three Houses or Engage; Three Houses is basically a new SRPG franchise with FE slapped onto its label (the FE skeleton is there but it plays fundamentally different) and Engage requires you to have a high tolerance for cringe and enjoy sweatlording.

If you end up not liking Fire Emblem as an SRPG series, I wrote a bunch of reviews on other SRPGs a bit back in the thread; most of them all play differently from one another, so hopefully you'd be able to find something else to enjoy in the genre.

I second this because my brother was just like that.
The only FE he ever played was the Awakening Demo from way back, he liked it but never played the full game because I recall he was into Dues Ex human revolution at the time.
He didn’t touch Fates because he didn’t appreciate the multiple routes “again with this Pokemon bullshit??” was his direct quote.
He finally tried out a FE game and it was Three Houses, I was surprised he liked it way more than I expected and it was fascinating to see a view point of a completely newcomer.
if you’re curious: he picked Blue Lion and he ABSOLUTELY HATED Edelgard’s guts. He refused to play Black Eagle afterwards both here and Three Hopes

play Tactics Orge ether luct or reborn. (slightly different versions of the same game) not only the best SRPG but also the best JRPG ever (in my objectively correct opinion)

Edit unicorn overlord is also very well made recent addition to the genre, and it game play is easy to learn difficult to master.

Only got arround to playing tactics ogre reborn earlier this week. some of the changes like individual units leveling up instead of classes and limting spells and skills to only 4 slots are fine, but removing random encounters and instead having training maps where you can't get items or recruit units is fucking retarded.

(I know this is the fire emblem thread, but the only other thread we have is for indie tactical games.)

Mangs bungled his FE1 run 3 episodes in. Just to save people some time.
Not surprised
I just can’t fathom why he thought this lunacy of a challenge was a good idea - aside from being a content-.
Didn’t he fail every single Ironman run in fucking Radiant Dawn? Not shaming him because RD is such a bitch to Ironman but no way he can complete this gauntlet

Blue Lions  is objectively the best route to play if you’re only playing the game once so lucky him. I'd imagine he might not have liked it as much if he went Black Eagles.

I mean it's just easy stream content for him until either his next hack or Fortune's Weave comes out. Whichever comes first

Isn't the Edelgard route more appropriate? It feels more like a true ending rather than standard forever war plot. Also she had a better group.
Black Eagles is the worst route if you’re only doing one blind playthrough. It's the shortest route and there's a few events that have cutscenes in the other routes that just don't in Black Eagles like how the time skip happens and the TWSITD nukes making it very confusing if it's the first and only route you play. Since instead of a cutscene showing you what happened you get the characters awkwardly explaining what happened.

The main reason I say Blue Lions is the best route for a person only doing one playthrough is because you fight Ashe's dad and Sylvain's brother pre-timeskip which are most appropriate for the Blue Lions. Then they'd never know pre-timeskip is ass because it's actually just the same across all the routes. Then post time skip Blue Lions becomes the standard FE Formula of Dimitri being the lord and Edelgard and the empire being the villain. TWS and the church get off scot-free here but that's honestly fine since I don't think any route should have a perfectly good ending

While I'm sperging about Three House, I agree completely with what someone else said that Three Houses is basically a new SRPG franchise with FE slapped onto its label. So for all the things you can shit on Engage for, the story, character design, dialogue etc I will actually praise it for backtracking from Three Houses gameplay and the game actually feeling mostly like a Traditional FE game but with the added gimmick of the rings. So I'm fucking hoping Fortune's Weave is more like Engage in gameplay even if it is in Fòdlan

Also I just really like Engage's graphics and combat animations and I'm kinda sad from the very little we've seen of it, for some reason Fortune's Weave looks like a step back from it.

Crimson Flower just ended with an implied ending right after Rhea is slain and Byleth's Crest Stone just shatters and their heart starts beating for some unexplained reason.

But the Golden Deer just winds up fighting Team Slither in the endgame because their leader wasn't randomly stabbed by the murderhobo king

The route where the main conflict is hastily wrapped up in an ending slideshow off screen feels like a true ending? Okay, if you say so.

And both Claude and Edelgard's routes have the fighting continue on after the credits roll. Dimitri's route is the only one where the death of the final boss brings an end to the war. Maybe Silver Snow too but I don't remember.

Unrelated but lol @ mekkah and his double digit view count streams.

How about that music? I don't even need to mention the writing.

I genuinely don't remember the epilogue to Claude's. All I remember is that Rhea's implied to have been dying, Team Slither had lost nearly all of their leadership, and the Kingdom might be going through a civil war

A bunch of imperial remnants come together to continue the fight on Edelgard's behalf (since Claude kind of warp skips the Empire in his route) and they nearly conquer the Alliance but Claude comes in with an Almyran army and defeats them once and for all.

Not a huge deal but objectively the fighting isn't over and there's a loose end to tie up that Dimitri doesn't have to deal with since he defeats the Empire in decisive, open battle.

Did it mentioned anything about Count Bergliez leading them? Because if not, then that'll be a pretty weird omission.

He made it to Ashera in one, just to (((lose))) because he had to "kill" her 10 times as a challenge for content. Dumbest shit ever, and I hope I never see him play that game again because RD is on another level of hard to watch, for a Fire Emblem game, at that.
