This. As someone who started in the GBA days, how could you not field this motherfucker?

I also once made Ewan a Druid, and while that probably isn't optimal, he was a tanky, dark magic wielding nightmare for the enemy.

What’s a class that you know is suboptimal but you continue to use out of emotional attachment or just personal affinity for its playstyle? Personally, I will baby my dodgetanking myrmidons until they day I die.
I've always loved archers, even in 7 international/PoR where effective dmg is x2 instead of x3. People ho hum about no 1 range, but because of it archers don't have the problem of suffering from success as other units when you need someone to choke a point...

...and bows have the benefit of being usually stronger, lighter, and more accurate than javs and hand axes, as well as less generally contested. Plus the AI in older games LOVES to go for free potshots on vulnerable archers, so they're great bait units in a pinch. Even at their most basic and low investment and monkey brain level of play, it's always nice just to have a guy around that can do chip damage with reliable hitrates.

oni savage and apothecary
It's so sad and gay that Rinkah isn't in CQ, and I lol whenever anyone says she's a bad unit because even if she had 0 in every stat, she's still one of the best physical backpacks in the game and the premiere free-est Shove clicker in the game, so she always does something good. Kumagera's incredible and I love him to death, but he just can't spread the love like a proper named unit can. Just thinking about it makes me want to get a run going to try out Oni Chieftain Odin, he's got the luck for Salvage Blow and stacking Death Blow with Aching Blood sounds like a good time. Tangentially related but luck stacking is funny as fuck in Fates: Azura's Inspiring Song is +3, Rally Luck is +8, and luck tonics are +4, all coming together for a clean +15 before pairup bonuses. Speaking of Luck stacking...

Apothecary gets way too screwed by availability in CQ for how cool it is too. Like nigga I don't want to have to A/S rank Midori, it takes too long. Other than Midori, who generally does better out of the class anyway, I think the only other options are generics from the pots chapter and Senno from Ophelia's paralogue, and Senno blows. Still, I love Corrin and Jakob in that classline; outlaw and archer are very stiff competition, but apothecary's fat fucking ass makes up for it - almost as naturally bulky as knights, and Corrin does a really good job of shoring up their slowness with a speed boon, and Potent Potion/Quick Salve augment their inherent stickiness even further (HP tonics become +7, luck tonics are now +6, and vulneraries suck less). Profiteer and Spendthrift usually take a bit too long to come online for my taste, but then there's Jakob who gets them basically from the word go and starts generating both gold with his respectable luck stat and on-demand Spendthrift Fuck You buttons from the convoy if he's paired up with Corrin. Then he can pivot over to Mechanist for better 1-2 combat and Replicate, which has additional fun synergy with Quick Salve. Love Fates, man.

Wow, y’all are dedicated. FE is my favorite series but I only consider myself a casual player, and I usually keep units in their base class.
You should definitely try out goofing around with it. I have a “rule” for myself that if anyone in a 3DS or switch game ends the game in their base class then I clearly was lacking on my shitposting lmao. A lot of it comes from filling out the support log, I try to repeat pairings as little as possible to see new stuff, which creates some, strange, builds sometimes. It’s just my play style, there’s definitely nothing wrong with just chilling out.

I'm eager to start the GBA Emblems after Thracia... or maybe I just want to see what Lyn is all about besides killer thighs a killer edge.
Lyn is pretty okay, she is just your run of the mill average myrmidon stat-wise- what makes her marginally useful is her personal weapon which is basically a Killing Edge with slightly less crit but effective damage on Cavaliers and Knights.

The only problem is that Lyn always dies in two hits and she faces weapon triangle disadvantage from the units her weapon is effective against.

At least she is a bit better than Eliwood since she at least reliably doubles unlike him.

I only ever bothered playing Eliwood hard mode (I'm a filthy casual, I know), but even then, Lyn was just very... disappointing.

I'd prefer using Eligood over her, because while Eliwood doesn't double everything on the planet, at least dealing 8 damage is better than 2x2.

... She does have some sick combat animations tho I won't lie, probably my favorite GBA unit to watch.

Aside from the general sentiment of armor knights as the lumbering wall hampered by speed but still worthy of love, I like mercenaries and heroes as the mixed-use sword-and-shield class, even if the general sentiment is that they aren't good enough because they aren't a mounted unit. The berserker also holds a fond place in my heart thanks to those beefy axe crits, even if it's “optimal” to use the consistency of Warriors. If nothing else, Ross always takes the pirate-to-zerk path when I play Sacred Stones

Fe4 is so easy, you can miss out on most of the event spaces and still beat the game without trying. I beat fe4 without Forseti, for example. You can probably beat it easily without anyone inheriting anything since Generation 2 is unexpected for first time players

I definitely feel that is a real headache of that game, combined with the lack of proper localization meaning the translation is often spotty even today, not even counting the continuous changing of names as Nintendo localizes various places and characters (admittedly, many of these were probably the intended form to start with). I really do hope that Genealogy is remade on the Switch 2 and that it gets a few QOL improvements, because patched SNES ROMs downloaded from questionable sources can only work so well.

I’m hoping for FE6 first, personally. With a reduction in same-turn reinforcements, a little smoothing out of the Gaiden chapter requirements, more Lilina/Guinivere in the plot, and a bit of unit rebalancing (BUT DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH RUTGER), that game would really be something great.

There is something hilarious about Ross and Amelia when you compare the sprites to their portraits. Amelia is a waifish girl who can be the armored monstrosity I posted earlier, and Ross looks like this:

If you train up the 'trainees' the level of overpowered jank you have access to is hilarious. Basically the concept of like Donnell and Mozu on steroids.

The main problem with trainees has always been the cost and babying required to get them started at least. Used to be that they were at least respected for the Magikarp factor allowing for good potential compared to units who were already stat-screwed, but now that LTC and bases became to end-all-be-all of character rankings they practically never get above c-tier. Still like using them for the satisfaction of building a proper army instead of relying on one paladin to do everything in the way certain big-name LPer's do.

I agree. Well, I don't know which LPer, but I'm a big believer in not trying to optimize the fun out of the game. I just pick who I like and go nuts. Like when I played Awakening, I loved seeing how insane I could make the different characters with second seals and inheritance, but the amount of grinding and babying units was insane.

Also, I don't know if its specific to a certain game or not, but since you mentioned one paladin, I just remember how absolutely busted Seth is throughout Sacred Stones, and canonically in the entire game, he is actually crippled from a wound in the prologue. That means a guy who can effectively solo the entire game, including the final boss who's basically Satan, does it all while dealing with a major wound.

This map kicks ass. I love the sickly green flames, it makes the dungeon look like Minas Morgul from LOTR. Leif and the boys are in jail, and everyone's had their weapons confiscated. I execute a perfect plan, managing to get all the chests and rescue all the villagers. "It's challenging", I thought, "But not so bad"... What a fool I was. Right as you get to what I thought was the end - turns out -
Get Fucked Bitch! Ambush! Now you gotta deal with this shit!

You have to contend with an entire room full of enemies (with healers) as you are hounded from the back by an infinite wave of soldiers. I suppose this must be Thracia's fabled difficulty, along with Kaga's famous storytelling through gameplay. It really feels like you're part of a prison break, there's no time to fight it out, you just need to focus on escaping.

I would not call discussing unit strength optimizing the fun out of the game necessarily.
Personally I think it's fun to see what a unit is contributing to the army and rank them accordingly and there is value in such discussion since Fire Emblem is a pretty simple numbers game.

It also helps people who may be struggling with the difficulty, telling them what units are good.

You also need to keep in mind that these kind of discussions pretty much only take into account the hardest difficulty of the game, in which some characters may actually be an active detriment to your party if you give them too many resources.

One such example could be Donnel from Awakening on Lunatic, he really has no realistic way to contribute to the army, his stats suck, his class sucks, he needs tons of exp to do what your other units can do already.
Donnel is an active detriment to your army and a black hole of resources.

That is what unit discussion is all about, you can still use bad units and in my opinion that is a very fun way to play the game, just stomping Sacred Stones with Seth isn't very fun so to speak, just efficient.

I meant that I don't see value in just trying to over optimize the game when I'm playing it. Other people can play however they want.

Granted, I have no interest in watching someone who has mathed out the best possible army, but I don't care if someone chooses to. It's just now how I play.

Yeah, it's kind of boring. If you want to see the driest most boringest thing imaginable look for LTC runs by Dondon.
It's not even playing the game at that point.
