He's learned that saying "Trolls bought it for me!" won't work, so now his defense is "My mother bought this for herself, honest!".

The important thing to take out of it is that there is no accident on Chris's part. He knows damn well that people want to have a legitimate reason to feel sympathy for someone, Chris has willfully chosen to lie to his friends and snooker them out of their sympathy.

Besides, Barb doesn't have time for pokemans. She too busy teaching high school kids about Abe Lincoln.

I think it's nothing more than him picking a name and trying to possibly seem endearing to Barb. Like when a kid scribbles out a picture of their parents because they think it's a nice thing to do. If Chris was 7 then naming it after Barb would seem adorable but at 31 it loses a bit of it's charm.

I've actually thought for a while that the entire idea of his fantasy fuckdaughter was named "Crystal" for no other reason than that he liked Pokemon Crystal.

Maybe he dreamed the "god promises Crystal" dream after he played some good ol' pokemon crystal. Makes as good of sense as anything else Chris does.
