Pokemon Gen 1 comes to mind. That shit holds up pretty well for an 8-bit game. Later gens overshadow it so much that it gets shit on as a buggy, obsolete relic of the past. Yeah, it's no longer going to be a thrilling, sprawling adventure to anyone even if they've never played a Pokemon game before, but it's taken on a quaint charm of its own if you can appreciate what is there rather than what isn't.

I wouldn't call it underrated. The series was one of the most impressive non-platformer games the Gameboy had to offer and definitely one of the only RPGs on it worth anyones time

Of course, I just meant by today's standards because it was obviously by no means underrated at the time. Fans today even have a sort of condescending name for anyone in the fandom who prefers gen 1 (genwunners).

There are so many games I can list here:

-The Harry Potter game that was like Pokemon Go (can't remember the title).

PG is still going strong but they discontinued the HP one.

-Lunar: Silver Story for Playstation (original). Excellent storyline and kind of wishing they continued making it for the different generations of Playstation.

-Kingdom Hearts Franchise. A lot of people have said that Disney should not mix with the Final Fantasy characters, but I love it.

And probably going to catch flak for this....

-Dance Dance Revolution (BEFORE Just Dance was even thought of!) This was my jam when I was a teen.

-Karaoke Revolution

And lastly:

-Katamari Dachi!

The multiplayer for The Last of Us was very underrated for how good it was. It was my favorite thing for a long time. It didn't really feel like it had anything to do with the main game, no zombies or anything like that, was based around two teams of scavengers fighting each other. Have to scavenge supplies to make your bombs, traps, and improvised melee weapons. With Last of Us' slower, clunkier shooting, third person perspective but no auto aim, and the scavenging, it felt like it was some sort of insurgency warfare thing. Hard to put it into words exactly, but the combat had this brutal, intimate, and realistic feeling to it.

The multiplayer for Assassin's Creed games was also underrated for how unique it was. Have a docket of characters, you know who it is youre hunting for, but because the crowds are made out of clones of these different characters you don't know which one is the target, so if you don't want to expose yourself and/or scare them off, you need to try to move as naturally as possible while also keeping a sharp eye, like a detective, out for abnormalities. You could fuck around with gadgets and run on rooftops, and some of the games seemed more balanced towards that and weren't as good, but in general social stealth was the dominant strategy, and was played way better than in any of the single-player campaigns. I don't know if Hitman ever experimented with multiplayer, but imagine that. The characters were also pretty cool (I liked the Castilian swashbuckler in AC4) to learn, like a modern hero shooter.

I admittedly still have a soft spot for the first game. That game was so popular among my friends back in elementary school.

Ape escape 2 and 3, I see a lot of people talk about the first one, but barely anyone talks about any of the sequels (or the spin offs, but that is another thing entirely), I like 2 a lot and 3 is genuinely the best in the series.

Damn damn good games those were. 3 even had you make fifteen second movies of the monkeys you captured. I thought that was high tech back then.

Pokemon isn't anything I'd want to play today, but it's fascinating to study how they got such a huge game on something as primitive as the original Game Boy. I'm glad it's one of those games internet autists have dissected down to an atomic level, it tickles my hole to see so much efficiency pushing that old machine to its limits.

Whenever I hear Kingdom Hearts criticized, its never just because its a Disney-Square crossover game. It's that they had that concept but then for some reason had a totally retardedly convoluted plot.

At least, supposedly. I only ever played the original and I found it kinda boring personally.

Banished is one of the best, comfiest city builders ever made, and beat out attempts by major studios like Sim City and even Cities Skylines in the same wheelhouse. And it was made by one dude.

I liked it lol.

I'm not sure which games are underrated because videogame people are dumb.
There are a bunch from older systems that I liked that I never hear anything about, games like Legend of Oasis which were masterpieces of the time, but I think that was just because it was on Sega Saturn that nobody knows what it is.

Nobody talks about games on the turbo graphix, there were a ton of interesting games on there. There was a sort of Legend of Zelda ripoff called Neutopia (the second one was better) that nobody talks about that I liked a lot as a kid. Landstalker on the sega genesis is way better with save states, but still it was a fantastic isometric Action-adventure that was ahead of its time.

And that's not even scratching the surface.

There are so many youtube channels that talk about older games, but they never actually talk about most older games, they just talk about the same nonsense over and over. Hey have you guys heard of Symphony of the Night? Let me tell you about this obscure PS1 game called Symphony of The Night. Everyone else said it's good so now I can like it. Then maybe I can tell you about some NES games, ever heard of Chrono Trigger? Everyone else says that's good too. Maybe then I can show you my Garfield plushie collection.

I can go through my big old box of retro games and there will be maybe 4 of them that are ever discussed. Or do people not want to hear about new games, and just want to hear about the same ones they've played for the 1000th time because they're mentally children who only like games out of some desperate desire to relive their childhood?

In general the videogame reviewing public is almost as ignorant as any random person off the street and are generally just terrible at having opinions. Their thoughts are not worth taking into account.

I liked it lol.
I didn't realize lolcow thread specific people actually used to the rest of the site. I hope things are going well dealing with that one insane lady.

You're right. I always forget Gold & Silver are GB games, too. Man, that's a full-scale RPG with 251 playable characters designed for a handheld video game machine from the 1980s. That shit is insane.
Also helps that development tools were not designed to be as obstructive as possible like post-modern systems. Its no wonder they were able to make the leaps and bounds that they did. The GB wasn't going to have a seizure because you made a 2D character jump on an empty screen once.

Oh gosh, someone here who has played Neutopia. You sir are my new best friend.

I wish I had a bigger TG16/PC engine library. So far I have Military Madness, Dragon's Curse, the Ys games, Keith Courage, and a well-made bootleg of Sapphire. Oh and some fighting game ports and that Gate of Thunder Super CD that also included Bonk and Bomberman.

I wish I had Devil's Crush... I do, but its the Sega Genesis version (called Dragon's Fury). The TG version is slightly different.

.....

But I have the exact same frustration with so called "retro gamers." It seems like they only really explore the SNES, anything else you'll hear about basically stuff the Happy Nerd covered ten years ago. I don't need another video about how Shadow of the Ninja is a good game nobody played when its on the fucking Switch now. Most people who claim to be into the Sega Genesis only really know the first-party titles Sega keeps re-releasing on those compilations. Which, I mean, I love some Phantasy Star and Shining Force and Landstalker and Light Crusader (off-topic... did you know Landstalker is part of a series? I only recently found out).... but I have little patience for people who don't know what Might and Magic: Gates to Another World or Master of Monsters are.

Oh, here's a mid-cut... if I make a joke about having to make a Blocker so that the Builder can make bridges without the rest of the horde falling into a pit, all while humming an up-beat version of "the itsy bitsy spider," and you don't immediately think of green-haired critters with blue shirts.... you ain't a retro gamer. Okay, sometimes the critters wear santa hats and its instead upbeat renditions of Christmas carols, but that only happened on PC, not consoles.

I hate hate hate especially how most people's knowledge of the Genesis is limited to "just Sonic." I don't even think Sonic is the best game on the Genesis (though I don't hate them). The Sega CD gets a similar bad rap as most people (notably the AVGN) think that Sonic CD is the only good Sega CD game. Bitches have never played Hook (which isn't an exclusive, fair enough), Silpheed, Lunar, Dark Wizard, or Mansion of Hidden Souls, have they?

Sorry for the spergout, but its just a special feeling when someone else understands your incredibly niche pains.

I should put this in the unpopular opinions thread, but Sonic is the only great set of games for Genesis. I've got as much nostalgia of Golden Axe or Toejam & Earl as the next guy, but there's a reason those are dead and Sonic isn't.
