Fucking why? It's not like they even give you a TARDIS to fly. It's just cosmetics. Which matter less than ever since they took out Capsule quarters and never even put in Station interiors.
Why.
I know why actually, because pearl abyss is out of ideas after they obliterated playercount with scarcity, made the rich and powerful richer, and killed the strategic ore reserves of the little guys.

I knew Eve was dead when the major alliances all decided to just sit on their arses and not do any war. Except for maybe pre aranged slap fights that were boring as fuck. At least Mittens gets his ever shrinking virtual space empire to lord over.

MMOs are well and truly dead. Why work on a properly fleshed out game when you can do cheap fucking cash-ins like this and infinity micro-transactions.

I miss when your $15 got you access to the whole game.
I was fine with paying 40 quid for a box. I was fine with paying a further tenner a month because servers are expensive to run. And I was fine with paying another 20 every few years for a decently priced expansion because devs worked hard on it. That was the deal. It was a fine and simple deal. But the bar kept getting pushed. Going free to play has resulted in LESS not more. You have to pay for every other thing because "rising dev costs". We have to pay for developer bloat and hubris.

If the BBC is a 'public' corporation...
...do the Brits get all the skins free?

I mean, wtf are they paying that 'tv loicense' for?

jokes on you, my go-to MMO only has a optional sub and doesn't pull that shit (yet).

These comments have predicted the future we are now in. CCP Games announced a price increase for subscriptions with the base monthly price going up from $15 to $20, and the 500 PLEX monthly sub price going from $20 to $25. I think this now makes EvE Online the MMO with the most expensive subscription. The developers had a Fanfest event for the first time in 4 years in May, and while some of the stuff announced there sounds good, there were no concrete details on when new content will be coming out. A lot of long time players have been pretty vocal about unsubscribing, especially since the developers seem to be a lot more focused on the "new player experience" than adding or updating anything for established players. The number of daily active players has fallen to 2007 numbers this summer.

The unreleased Project Nova FPS game based on the EvE universe has been cancelled, with a new unannounced FPS project being worked on by a different studio within the company.

Anyone who has been thinking about playing EVE Gunjack or EVE Valkyrie should do so soon since the servers for both games will be turned off forever on August 5.

If you like to follow space empire drama, Goonswarm (the largest alliance in the game) is in turmoil over bad behavior by upper leadership exposed following sexual harassment accusations. Read about it in the Something Awful and Friends thread.

Considering Mittani's gotten away with death threats, this is old hat.
While this is true, the critical mass of controversy lead to the Addressing Community Safety news post by the developers and changes to some policies regarding harassment. By all public accounts, it looks like The Mittani is gone from EvE Online for good and not coming back. According to The Mittani's employment history his character was kicked from Goonswarm back in September. He stepped down from co-hosting his weekly livestream on EvE Online news and politics. The new co-host that took his place is Mark Resurrectus, who is also known as djKaktus in the SCP community (he doesn't have a dedicated thread here but there is talk regarding him in the SCP Foundation thread). The Mittani completely disappeared from doing anything public for around 6 months until he appeared as a guest on this livestream where he said he isn't coming back to EvE.

Some other stuff I noticed on EvE Online players who have threads here:

Spectre_06 Gaming (in game name Pirate Aussie) was quoted in this article on pcgamer.com regarding the increase to subscription prices for the game. He also made this video about it:

Liz Fong-Jones (in game name June Ting) interviewed Nick Herring the Technical Director of Infrastructure for EvE online last year:

The 20 year anniversary of EvE Online is this week. They are doing something similar to the 10 year anniversary where you can get your character name etched onto the monument in Iceland if you have an active subscription on May 6th. Character names from the 10 year anniversary on the monument will get a titan chevron icon added to their names if they have an active subscription on the 6th. If you want to get an active subscription just to get a name on the monument, don't spend $20 for a one month subscription since you only need a day of game time. The cheapest way to get Omega time would be to buy the weekend fleet pack ($3.75 for 3 days of Omega) or starter pack ($5 for 7 days of Omega).

Thanks. Good info.
I just can't go back....

oof. Still its amazing it lasted this long.

Did they ever bring the AT back? God, I was such a fag.
I would watch the AT while drinking on comms with my corp/alliance mates...

One year I was on vacation, (in a cabana!) watching the AT - and annoyed by the sunlight!

memories...

Last I played was in 2018, and even then I didn't get very far. Is this worth picking back up now?

The last thing I really paid attention to about this game was some community post in the past year or two about cracking down on toxicity OUTSIDE the EVE community, which I wish I archived since it seems to have been deleted.

The AT came back in 2021, primarily due to the work of CCP Aurora (formerly Katalya Myst of the Brave Dojo). The early rounds for this year's tournament start in June.

If you have a playstyle that doesn't require Omega you could try it out in free to play mode before committing to coming back. I like the current state of the game. It was looking bad for most of 2022, but things seemed to turn a corner with the release of the Uprising expansion in November. The new Navy ships and revamp to Faction Warfare are good. They didn't reverse their decision to set the monthly subscription price to $20, but they do have sales more often with higher discounts now. I have been getting game time for cheaper than before they raised prices since I always wait for good sales and buy subscription time in longer blocks of time. I don't think it is worth $20 a month, but it costs me less than $10/month to keep my subscription active.

Maybe you are thinking of the Harrassment & Threats Policy that can get accounts banned for activity outside the game. Auraus Porcaleus was banned under it for making this meme PVP video:
Video archive is here in case it gets privated. The story behind it:
Yeah so few weeks ago, the CEOs of foxholers and Turbofeed or Glory, decided they had grounds to evict me over external, out of game drama. The main structure was called the Feathertar. This video is me mocking them for bringing in something like 80+ characters to kill a tiny groups/my structure over some personal grudge. Bunch of the frag footage is stuff suitable for memes like Gist vs Pith booster, stitch kaneland being a massive narc, and some other inside jokes.

STRATEGY FOR THE MASSES

In the fiercely competitive world of New Eden, strategy, knowledge, and preparedness are paramount. Gain a competitive edge by harnessing the power of data, as access to and the understanding of data can spell the difference between victory and defeat.

For a long time, EVE Online has been lovingly referred to as “Spreadsheets in Space”. Well, your chance to excel in New Eden can now become reality with the official Microsoft Excel add-in for EVE Online. You can now quickly and efficiently arm yourself with the information and knowledge to reach your goals and aspirations. Easy access to in-game data facilitates decision making and brings added fairness and accessibility to everyone, without requiring coding knowledge or dependence on player-developed third-party tools.

The add-in was developed in collaboration with the Excel team, including some in-house capsuleers who have been invaluable to the project. EVE Online is the first and only video game to have developed an Excel add-in leveraging this type of data integration.

“CCP Games has extensive experience in the MMO space, so it’s only natural that we collaborate with them to launch the first-ever native Microsoft Excel add-in for a video game,” said Catherine Pidgeon, Microsoft Head of Product, Excel. “With the add-in, the EVE Online player base can seamlessly export and manage data without third-party tools. Through this collaboration, we’re excited to see how players of EVE Online of all skill levels can use Excel to streamline data management and take their in-game experience to new heights.”

MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS

This is an indispensable tool for any player striving to reach new heights. Whether you’re looking to maximize your industrial enterprise, manage frontline warfare or simply have access to a searchable overview of all your assets, all the information you need for advancement, and eventual domination, will now be at your fingertips.

Available information includes your assets with location and item value, market orders, item market prices, wallet transactions, skills, as well as an overview of corporation finances (if you have required roles) to make informed decisions.

You can download this sample workbook for useful ideas on how you can put the add-in to use. For further information, dive into EVE Academy or the Help Center. The time has come for you to leverage the power of information to dominate in New Eden and become the data driven capsuleer you never knew you needed to be.

Tune into the live stream on CCPTV on 20 June at 20:00 UTC to see what this amazing add-in can do, featuring guests from Microsoft, CCP Convict, CCP Nomad and EVE player Oz.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to all the beta testers who have given us invaluable feedback on the development of this add-in. The plan is to continue iterating on it as players put its various functionalities to use, and we can’t wait to watch you excel in New Eden.
