I enjoy the random seething I still see directed at capcom. People really think the sequel being so underwhelming is solely because capcom either
1. Slashed the budget
2. Gutted the dev time
C. Both
People genuinely think capcom tried to intentionally sabotage the game for no real reason, other than to I guess fuck with Itsuno despite him being pretty well respected with a good track record thanks to DMC. I mean, the guy was trusted enough that capcom gave him one of their largest in-house dev teams ever at the time in order to make the first Dogma despite neither him, the company or his team having any experience with a game like that before and the fact that doing this directly impacted DMC and ResEvil since the next games as a result of people being pulled off those games to work on Dogma(Racoon City and the DMC reboot are the result of Dogma 1). And they obviously had enough faith to give him like 4-5 years and pretty standard sized AAA dev team as well as budget.
So this idea that this series' hyperfans have of evil capcom having a vendetta against Itsuno is strange. And what makes it even more strange is that both Itsuno and Capcom are, for whatever reason, very happy with the game as is. Capcom recently stated something like "the game is performing exactly as we'd hoped", and Itsuno has said multiple times that this is what he always envisioned the game to be.
It was one thing for the hardcore fanboys to circlejerk the game as some hidden gem that's totally a revolutionary game, despite having zero impact on the gaming industry in any way whatsoever, when it was just one game with an unfortunate amount of cut content. It seemed, at the time, that the issue was solely down to corpo fuckery. But now we know that's just not the case.
The first game was as plagued as it was because itsuno had much grander visions than he was ever gonna pull off, on top of having to design a whole new engine to handle the bullshit the first game let you do. And history simply repeated itself with the sequel.
