I heard on reddit that puts it solidly into one of the best selling releases for Square Enix / JRPGS this year, if not THE best? Is that right?
In Japan, it’s the best selling physical game this year.

In Europe it sold worse than FF7 Rebirth.

So DQ III HD-2D sold more copies on just Switch & PS5 than Dragon Age: Veilguard did across all platforms? Hilarious!

mixed on the others being remade but IX needs a remake. The game only came out on DS 15 years ago and is borderline unplayable nowadays unless you go through hoops connecting your DS to a wi-fi hotspot from your phone.

I played it on an emulator awhile ago. I lost my save file somehow. But I'd like to finish it someday. I thought it was playable. Am I missing something big by not having access to the wi fi features?

From what I remember, the game was very multiplayer-focused, adventuring together with other players, etc. It was very much made for the demographic of Japanese people who commute a lot. I believe the Wi-Fi feature lets you download dungeons and quests, although I think I remember using Action Replay to get all of them.

I would love a multiplayer DQ game on steam, and one I can mod to have an actual translation as opposed to a localization

The wifi stuff you can access on emulator too, IIRC.

But the Wifi shit is:
DQVC (localizers....), an online store rotating through 52 different weeks of stuff. Nothing game breaking IIRC, mostly cosplay gear so you can look like other DQ characters, or stuff you can get from the grottos, but early.
64 side quests, IIRC nothing major, although IIRC some of them hint at plans to have added a postgame superboss that didn't pan out IIRC
Cameo characters from previous DQ games added to ... "Patty's Party Planning Place." (Fuck my life I hate the DQ localization team.)

However it's easy enough to get it all set up, just gotta set the DNS to a specific one and try connecting.

DQ9 being redone in the DQ3 HD2D engine would be really really nice. Just sayin'.

The game had local multiplayer. Originally it was going to be an Action RPG, until 2ch found out and Japan had a pretty epic freakout about it. So they scrapped development of the ARPG version midway and we got the kinda odd mix of stuff in DQ9 (visible monsters on the field, for example).

The ARPG prototype was kept and turned into a game called Fantasy Life, which is getting a switch sequel ... this year? Next year? The first one was really fun. Imagine an open worldish action RPG Dragon Quest game with the serial numbers filed off.

DQ9's tag system was so popular and so well done that Nintendo took the idea and turned it into the killer app for the 3DS, Streetpass.

Dragon Quest IX without its DLC content is pretty damn short compared to every DQ game before it, and a wardrobe completionist angle to continue play isn't really possible because a lot of it is locked off. Likewise the Legacy Bosses which drop orbs needed to make the strongest equipment in the game is also locked off. If it wasn't for the DLC content quadrupling the amount of things to do in the game, the really only standout things it had was a new vocation system and customizable characters.

It's possible to get this stuff, but not without hoops the developers didn't intend.

I never played it, I've barely dipped my toes into fan translations. I played a little bit of a Japan exclusive DS Fire Emblem where you make your own character, but that's it. Is the SNES version better than the DS one?
Bit of a late reply as I'm just reading through this thread, but to answer your question: It definitely has more soul and a decent difficulty to it in my eyes. Keep in mind though that if you decide to give it a go:

- There's a dismounting mechanic for horse/dragonback riding units that forces them to switch from lances to swords for certain whole chapters and parts of maps where it's supposedly indoors. It also nerfs some of their stats temporarily and reduces movement until they remount. Since a good chunk of the more difficult chapters are indoors, you might want to invest more into a few mercenaries/heroes and a archer/sniper for long-term utility compared to their horseback equivilants.

- Fighters in Book 1 who are the only ones capable of using axe weapons (the FE1 portion of the game) can't promote, and since 5 chapters and 5 recruitable units are axed from FE1, it means no Darros or the 2 ballista guys appearing either. Hell, Book 2 has no recruitable axe users at all and the few axe weapons you do obtain are meant to be sold for cash.

- Dragon/Manakete units are way more dangerous in this game as opposed to DS, dealing fixed damage that ignores defense and resistance plus they can hit at 1-2 range and will try to hit you from a manner that you can't counterattack if they're able to do so.

-Marich and his HAXcalibur tome is OP as fuck and a great bosskiller

Back on topic of Dragon Quest though: Shame this shit happens to one of my more favorite RPG series and glad Horii is speaking out against it. Streisand Effect in full swing baby! I've played the DS remakes of IV up to VI and yeah the dialogue accents and puns were annoying/blergh as well and it sort of took me out of the plot at times but it was the lesser of two evils compared to this shit.

Guess I'll go back to playing on my GBC version of III for nostalgia sake soon.

Anyone avoiding DQ3 HD2D over wokeshit is probably making a mistake. The changes are minimal and the game all but calls it stupid the second the game starts. The most offensive things to me are the minor changes to the Japanese script (which I'll never see) and the censorship of Toriyama's art and designs. I'm far, far, FAR more annoyed at the god fucking awful localization choices they made in DQ9's era and refuse to undo sticking around.

It was basically a nothingburger. They changed literally just enough to shut the DEI department down and tell the Global Standards branch to fuck off. The game literally asks something akin to "You're aware Type A means Male" and if you say no, the game forces you to start the game over until you figure it out.

And remember, this is the height of wokeshit, these changes were created years ago, back at the height of all this madness. (Unless they dialed shit back late in development due to the pushback they were getting, which admittedly would be nice.) It's all uphill from here, back to normalcy. Or so I hope.

Now we just got to pray the rumors of DQ12 having a variant of FF13's battle engine aren't true.

Having played III on mobile it still has one of the most obnoxious and obtrusive translations in the entire series and I will wait until the initial sales have been counted to get it.

Gameplay wise it sounds better than any prior version of DQIII, only thing it's missing is the Pachisi stuff

Basically yeah. And the collectable coins that no one cared about. (Originally they were going to be a thing in future games, and you'd be able to trade them up from the older games. The DQ4 ones are hidden in DQ3's code, dummied out.)

3HD2D does add the GBC bonus dungeon back, which requires you do basically everyfuckingthing in the game to unlock doors in it to get to the end. And there's whatever they have planned for next year's DQ1+2 HD-2D...

I'm playing it in castillian spanish. Seems the gender changes are not as bad as in english. I mean, the spanish grammar breaks if someone tries to mess with the grammatical gender rules stablished on it.

The English version too, actually. When you identify a dress, it flat out tells you "this is only equippable by women." The only place that "Appearance A" is used instead of "Male" is when creating characters, and as mentioned, the game makes sure to tell you "you know that means Male, right?" Some personalities were renamed -- extremely poorly -- to be gender neutral, but that's about it. For example, "Tomboy" doesn't make sense because boys and girls don't exist (except, as mentioned, they do) "Type A" (male) characters can now have the personality, so it's now Tear-Away, UK slang for "a young person who behaves in an uncontrolled way and is often causing trouble." Which isn't a tomboy, it's a delinquent, but whatever.

Square peg, round hole, DEI sledgehammer.

But anyway, aren't you a proud "latinx?" Don't you know your language is outdated and must be updated, a bunch of marxists in California have decreed it so!

I just don't like the Roto Trilogy in general. They're good, don't get me wrong. But for me it is all about V, VI and especially VII.

Games that just keep going are the best.
I'll be honest I haven't finished a stupid amount of DQ games. 2, 5/6, 7... The ones I have finished I obsessively 100%'d, but...

I'd go crazy on 4/5/6 if not for them being trapped on mobile, and 7 on 3DS. The fact that they steadfastly fucking REFUSE to do Steam or even Switch ports at this point is absurd.

Meanwhile, the same person who lied about the Horii type-a interview, claiming it was deleted from the internet because it was maliciously translated and he didn't say what he said, has a new article up:

I'm not seeing a flood of people complaining, although things might have shifted in the past 2 days. What I am seeing is a lot of Japanese people going "Hey, is there a mod to turn off fully healing on level up, cause that's stupid bullshit" and talking about tweaking the battle UI to move things around a bit.

There are many Japanese individuals like that. There's a reason why you don't often see much useful work done by the Japanese side of a fandom.

It's oftentimes not worth caring about what the Japanese side of a fandom says due to that, but some people like to hold them up as more enlightened than the average Western fan for some reason.

EDIT: Fixed typo.

Could it be worse? Of course, but that's death by 1000 cuts shit. Just get it used or pirate it, especially if/when there's fan mods to fix it.

As for FF13's combat, it could be worse, it could be FF12's combat. I just wish Square would use FFX-2's combat again, X & X-2 have the best turn-based & ATB combat in the series.

Would you be willing to emulate the DS/3DS versions? Because those remakes are generally good to great, despite some people hating them. Otherwise yeah, they are expensive. But having 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on the handheld is great.

Even the translation shit from 9 is awesome because of how much it makes people seethe.
