No. No more remakes. It's like the only things that come out nowadays are remakes, shit and shit remakes no one asked for. hd-2d is fugly btw
mixed on the others being remade but IX needs a remake. The game only came out on DS 15 years ago and is borderline unplayable nowadays unless you go through hoops connecting your DS to a wi-fi hotspot from your phone.

They changed the Japanese script to make any mention of sex "gender neutral," actually. The current day brainrot runs deep.

View attachment 6647339
Original Japanese: "I raised you just like a brave young man"
English: "I raised you as a brave young woman"
New Japanese / New English: "I raised you"

View attachment 6647340
Original Japanese: "Welcome, brave son... er... daughter. Well, you really do act like a boy..."
English: "Welcome, brave son... er... daughter. Well, you're certainly Ortega's kid."
New Japanese / New English: "Welcome, Ortega's kid!"

it's so tiresome
I thought they changed these parts because they added voices and they cheaped out on recording lines. Apparently a lot of the unvoiced script is still fully gendered.

Which makes the entire Type A/B choice even more confusing

It's not impossible that they changed the lines for voice acting reasons but I would find that suspect. Especially since every single edit was to conform to Californian political orthodoxy.

And some definitely weren't for VA reasons. For example:

They simply cut out the "with those delicate arms of a woman" line from the Japanese script. But the lines are all still gendered as it's the King trying to justify making the female hero a "king."

I remember I played that with 2 nintendo ds systems. One with hacked save files to transfer all the hacked materials and stuff to the main game.

I forgot how bad the localization for III was. However, Wakey Dust was something seen in the mobile and Switch versions already:

That's been an issue with Dragon Quest localizations for a while. For some reason they refuse to just have the game translations be played straight. Dragon Quest V was possibly the worst offender given that is the darkest game in the series and they make all the villains chess puns with pseudo-slavic accents. That's more of an issue with shit localization than the game itself; it'd be like condemning V DS for its bad localization when the core game (and plot) is good and the names are normal in Japan.

Of course. But then it raises the question- why play a remake that is inferior to the original? Why would I play the DS remake of 5 when the fan-translated PS2 remake is more faithful, has a better OST and graphics, and has the story additions that the SNES version lacks (save for best girl)? Why would I play the HR remake of 3 when I could just wait for the inevitable fan translation and then pirate DQ3, getting the same experience while not giving Square Enix any money?

Edit: It looks like a mod is already in the works.

Oh, the localizations can be a rant in and of themselves. The long story short is that Enix USA made a shitty tie in game for some saturday morning cartoon in the west without telling Enix JP, so they went DFE on the US branch. They reopened just in time for Enix JP to buy Squaresoft JP to keep Microsoft from doing a hostile takeover, and the recreated Enix USA (Dragon Warrior 7 being their biggest release IIRC) was shut down so Squaresoft USA could take over. But Squaresoft USA is like modern Marvel/DC -- you're not there because you love the industry, you're there because you want the prestige of working for an industry leader. And asking a bunch of people already busy skullfucking Final Fantasy into the ground to work on a mostly unknown franchise in the west was just asking for trouble.

Dragon Quest 9 was the first one I think, before DQ4/5/6. This was where the Squaresoft USA guys basically decided that no one in the west knew about this silly little niche JRPG they were being forced to localize by the JP branch, so they just wiped out all the references to the original games -- DQ9 being a spiritual remake of DQ3 -- and went with "le based tumblr rewrites" to show off how awesome writers they are. So you had stupid shit like the Buddhist inspired Dharma Shrine, which has been in almost all the games since DQ3, being renamed the Catholic inspired "Alltrades Abbey." Why? Because they wanted to rename the villain in DQ9 as "Jack of Alltrades" and his evil boss form after he's outed as being a monster, "Master of Nu'un." A tortured reference to an idiom/saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none," from the 15th century.

The localization of 9 was full of this kind of shit, in the monsters, in the spells, in the locations, in the characters, in the script. If they could rewrite something as le-funnay-laugh-damnit alliteration pun shit, they did. And they've kept ALL of these shitty localization changes since then, because if they ever stop using them that would be them admitting they did something wrong, and fuck you.

You could tell they had no idea how to actually market and localize and make a series a success on it's own based on the marketing for DQ9. They got some... pro skater? Or some D list 20 year old movie star? Someone to pretend to be playing the game in ads. It was cringe as fuck. But without the Cultural Inertia of Final Fantasy buffeting them, they just don't know how to do their jobs.

DQ4 DS was special too. I think it came out after DQ9 in the West, and they decided to give people accents. This wasn't in the original script, like, at all, but fuck you, they're the artistes' and need this for their portfolio. This would be racist as fuck nowadays, but this was pre-2014, so it was ok to do. So you had the first towns being Irish or Scottish based, only they're not voiced (I suspect they were trying to push to include voice acting but it didn't happen), so how do you get the accents to come across?

Really really poorly, as it turns out. Scottish, Russian, German... they gave all the random regions of the world various accents that were just the most god awful fucking things. "Tsarevna is kidnaped!? How terrible this news!" "His Majesty is aboot tae make an announcement tae youse all. Simmer doon an' listen noo."

Not as bad as the last boss of ... one of them. He speaks in Russian. Not, you know, Russian text. No, Cyrillic script being used in ASCII art. So you have to look at the entire block of text and try and figure out what English letters they're trying to make out of the Cyrillic ones. I genuinely thought my copy of the rom was fucked with when I saw it.

This got better in 5 and 6, as defined as "you could at least read it without a translation guide pulled up on Gamefaqs," but it never got good. And they've kept this shit for every localization since then. Because if they ever stop, that would be them admitting they did something wrong, and fuck you.

... Did I mention how DQ4 DS had the party chat feature removed in the West, because localizing things is hard, guys, and surely no one will notice 75% of the game's script being removed? Yeah.

DQ3 2DHD's localization is way better than the DS ones, but they still maintain shit like the accents (toned WAY down because accents are racist now) and "Patty's Party Planning Place" (actual name: Luida’s Bar, which is an iconic enough reference that Square Enix opened an actual real life DQ themed bar named Luida's Bar) because to stop would be them admitting they're wrong, and fuck you.

Are we loosing steam yet? Has The Woke™ really won?

On Metacritic the score is 6,5. Should be better. The low end reviews are great. Bar the cringe rage heads bitching about their politics, the only real issues are the price and framerate.

While the changes suck dick, the fact that immediately after the genderspecial bullshit they go "You know Type A means Male and Type B means Female", and if you say no, they make you start the whole process over. They couldn't have implemented this shit more passive aggressively if they tried.

Must be Yuji Horii playing tricks.

I could tolerate some localization changes as long as they don't violate the spirit of the Japanese. I don't mind the new names for spell for that very reason because they were onomatopoeia just like the Japanese. The older names for spells were cooler, but were less faithful to the actual Japanese names in that respect.

Dragon Quest IX is annoying, but maybe I just never played a Japanese to English direct translation like the others but I didn't mind it as much because I have no basis of comparison. The Celestrians being named off constellations is one of the better localization choices because it's a pun dealing with flying and constellations, it actually feels grounded to the story and not arbitrary "le silly" puns. Rudia's is annoying, but one I hate even more was Dharma to Alltrades Abbey. That first started in IX to make a joke about the leader being named Abbot Jack (of Alltrades Abbey) who became the Master of Nu'un. Dumb pun but if they had that that's fine, but that pun only makes sense in the context of IX and Dragon Quest III's Dharma is clearly based in the equivalent of Tibet and they still keep the same name. It's bafflingly retarded.

Dragon Quest V is the Cyrllic one. It is the worst case in the series as that game is by far the most mature in the series, with patricide, child slavery, pregnancy, human trafficking, gnostic death cults, and later matricide. The game is absurdly dark for the series' standards, and said Gnostic Death Cult was clearly inspired by Persian and Middle eastern religions, hence all the turbans, names like Ramada and Ibul, etc. However they decided to make it all Slavic names and Chess puns, I find V the most aggravating because it downright ruins the tone of the game.

I'm just replaying a fanslation of DQ3 for Super Famicom with the MSU1 hack applied. Beautiful 2D, beautiful music. Am I missing anything by not playing an """HD 2D""" remake? I'd be playing both on a CRT TV almost as old as I am btw

A new class and a monster arena, from what my one friend is telling me.

It has a new class (Monster Wrangler), a monster catching side-quest thing very similar to DQ8's, revamped classes (classes now have abilities in addition to spells, for example the Warrior now gets Flame Slash), the bonus dungeon and superboss from the GBC version (which requires you do fucking everything in the game, like, find all the mini medals, capture all the monsters, etc), etc. Also, it's heavily implied DQ1+2 (next year) HD2D will allow you to import your save from DQ3 to unlock something after the end of DQ2 -- Horii mentioning offhand something about a red version of the Eldrick gear from DQ1-3 has some people thinking it's going to be a bonus dungeon of some kind.

If you're not jonesing for the latest thing, you could probably justify waiting for a sale.
